Attn those who make or buy liner locks

Cheffy.....Let me set you straight! This guy and I went to different schools together so I know for sure what he really said was his coals are of high quality! O’l Mr Mayo really cooks up a mean barbeque!

See what happens when Tom joins a thread and finds it Unbereveable!!!? What was a smooth, easy going, educational thread goes to hell in a hand basket, (snap), that quick :D

HEY The -Bad- Guy! Who are you to question some ones sauce???? What do you put in yours??? Are you the president of any backyard cooking organization???? Boy, if you ever come up here I’ll bash you with a frozen carp:)

gohmer, I will have you know I am the President, Founding father and sole member of the Virginia BBQ tasting organization. Who the hell are you?? ;)

Ok I am done unless I have something valuable to add to this thread or a maker would like to know about my new program where I accept a free folder from them and give first hand insight into there craftsmanship

The-Bad-Guy, very sorry for losing my temper. If you come up here I promise to take my
medication regularly and fillet that carp for you to barbeque instead of bashing you with it! Please
bring your special sauce and a pine board.

You guys might think this is all one big joke but I for one dont.First off Mr. The-Bad_Guy who makes me angered:grumpy:. I happen to be an authority on special sauces, not to mention lettuce,cheese,pickles onions on a sesame seed bun. And you Mr.Medicated gohmer this is really a pile of carp. What did that poor defenseless little carp do to you that would make you want to hurt it with Mr.The_Bad-Guy's hard head?:confused: This is all so confusing.Anybody know where to get good pizza?

OK, Cheffy......I think you and TheBadGuy are out to get me!!!!! You don’t happen to be a
floundering member of the VBTO do you??? BTW, gotta good carp recipe?:)

ROFLMAO. You guys are doing a fine job keeping us laughing during this intermission. Act 3 should be starting soon. According to the program I received when I came in, that's where Chuck responds to Will York.

I promised myself I would stay out of this thread unless there was something that deserved comment. Well I WILL NOT stand by and listen to gohmer question people about there affiliation with the VBTO!!! We are a secret society and our charter members are not required to acknowledge any existence of such an organization. This is not the first time I have heard of gohmer meddling where he doesn’t belong. Gohmer, I don’t think you understand who your messing with. Mr. Heinz, Mr. Bullseye or Crazy Kraft as he likes to be called, do not appreciate such nonsense!!!:mad:

This is all good clean fun, but it will be interesting to see if Mr. Gedraitis responds to Will York's question ... or if he doesn't....

I hope Chuck responds [How come you New Englanders call him 'chucky'?]
because when I went to the show in Marlboro, MA and was standing outside having a smoke, I overheard a knife dealer tell the wife of a knife maker's brother that he bought a knife from another Maker's neighbor and there was terrible blade play.

THEN I overheard him say [and I don't remember his name] that once he bought a knife from chuck and chuck told him that his work was good and that if there was any problem chuck would fix it immediately.

BUT then a knife maker's son came out for a smoke and I overheard him say that the New England knife makers were all mad at Chuck because they think he is 'cocky' [Now, they might have said cock-eyed and I overheard it incorrectly] and tells lots of people that his work is exceptional. Then the knife maker's son told another person attending the show that he heard from the neighbor of a knife maker's mailman that they all hate chuck.

Is this true??????????????

Boy, why didn’t all you famous knife makers think of this???? One of Possums own lodge brothers, the famous Red Green came up with the answer!!! Just a couple of wraps with 5.0 CM
gray detent tape and that o’l linerlock will stay shut, eh?

Sorry to hear that. I have to say that I would never let a knife leave my shop that was not "up to par".

With that said what did he say about your problems your having?
I have to say whenever you order a knife you should always check their work out first. Ive been to shows and looked at knives I would be embarrassed about selling. Many makers make "nice" looking knives these days, but the quality seems to be lacking with some, and some are not made to really "work" (heat treat not right, quality, materials, ect.)

For the most part though I believe most are pretty "conscientious" about what they sell.

With anything though you have to check them out. Some think that because a knife is a "high" price that denotes quality, but that could'nt be further from the truth. More expensive knives usually are better quality, or so you would think, but you can never use this as a rule.

It all comes down to checking out a makers work.

To set a few things straight I never said a word about Georges knives. I also said that the other makers knives were not to my taste or style. I do appreciate the work that goes into them

Mr. York did purchase that auto from me, and being my very first one it was sent back for adjustment. Nothing was broken.

Chuck also contacted me privately by email. I'm including a copy of my private response to him here, because it sums up the only point I wanted to make:

Chuck--

I have no doubt you have progressed a good deal since then--your work showed a lot of promise. I just don't think it's a good idea to suggest to people that your work is flawless--no custom maker's work is, after all. When you say you've never had a knife returned, some people who haven't been around the forums very long, and who haven't experienced how "human" even the best custom makers can be, might not understand that working with a maker--even a top maker--to iron out a rough spot or two is not unusual.

Thanks for the invitation to come by your table. I won't be at Blade this year, but when I do make it I'll stop by and say hello.

Will

I'm not in any way trying to excuse Mr. Gilbreath's handling of this. I had heard he had quit making knives. I own several of his knives, one of which I bought back in 1988 (a small liner lock) and carried daily except for about 18 months (does this sound familiar)around 1990 when I stuck it in a light fixture to remove a halogen bulb I thought had blown when actually it was wired up backwards. Created quite an arc and I learned several lessons from it, one of which is ATS34 will quite readily have sections burned out of under these circumstances, Mr. Gilbreath is very easy to get along with (I talked/wrote to him several times during the next 18 months) but he did only charge me $25 to replace the blade. 13 years later it has been a great daily user (along with a Terzuola carried for about 15,Bob returns a knife the same day it was sent to him, or at least he did in my case, Fedexed on Monday & had it back Wednesday, you can't beat that & it was just normal wear & tear/no charge)I really don't know what my point is & I hate to sound like I'm trying to make excuses for Mr. Gilbreath but I think he may have problems we don't know about. I wish he would get back into knives (if he did in fact quit)& hopefully someday he will be more able to focus on his work. I hate to try & judge a man without knowing what's going on.

Guy on E-bay full-o Sh**? I was just scanning e-bay,and since there was a thread here,I found this interesting.There is a Guy on e-bay selling a Randall Gilbreath bowie claiming he is a world reknowned knife designer and he is no longer alive.I found it odd since I assume this pocket knife situation was just a recent problem.Is this guy on e-bay full of crap?

That Ebay ad is one of three things that came to mind while reading this thread.

A second thought or three. I own one of the ti Gilbreath folders and some of the original concerns could ring true. The thumb studs do stick up above the frames and could shred a pocket or two. The pivot screw lock washer does not do what it was meant to but suprglue hasn't failed me yet. The split liner lock does just barely engage the angle of the tang but will certainly wear in before it wears out (snapping the blade open forcefully does further engagement but is hell on stop pins).

As far as Chuck's youthful exuberance goes, consider his youth;) Somehow I'm a bit disapointed he left the fixed blade efforts behind for them fancy auto folders.
~~~~~~
So anyway; Randall Gilbreath, dead or alive?
Cheers
GC
