Bad Survival Advice Makes Me Wonder...

Lets hope this doesnt extend to climbing ropes, parachutes or brakes on your car.

Sometimes you must count on your tools make em good ones.

Skam

I agree Skam. But a rock is a rock until someone comes along with the knowledge and skill to turn it into a multitool.:D

At least fixed blades won't fail to open when you want to go knife commando on a group of guys with handguns
I can't say that I've ever had a knife fail to open on me.

Have you?

[qoute]And I think that many folks who tote a fixed-blade (especially the larger fixed-blades) in to the woods are using that fixed-blade as a crutch to compensate for their lack of confidence with a folder[/qoute]

----------------------

tell you what :) you come hiking with me with your little folder, and i'll bring my standard Kabar kukri (one of my small knifes). I will take you through some BC wilderness. We will be approx 10 feet apart, each cutting our own trails. Lets see how that small folder holds out after about 20 feet of chopping dense thick undergrowth and fallen trees.

next we stop and build shelters. The average limb thickness round here is about 2" and up. Sure, you can cut thru them with a whittler, its gonna take you a long time though. Herein lies the difference, i will have my shelter built, my gear rucked away and a fire going by the time you are done whittling thru your branches for your shelter. My hands wont be fatigued or hurt from trying to force a little blade thru the wood. Thats the difference. thats why i dont use a folder in the woods, i use a chopper because its fast. I'll use a folder for fuzz sticks, or for food prep, but for firewood gathering, shelter building, trail clearing (these 3 are 98% of what i do on a hike) i'll use my fast time tested tough chopper.

Why are you chopping up the forest? Are there no established trails you can use instead? How does forestry management feel about you destroying swaths of wilderness for your own amusement??

Well, that's good for you. I've never brought a folder anywhere where I might actually need a knife quickly, so obviously I've never had one fail to open. However, that doesn't mean a lot of other people haven't had one fail - it's a fact that many have, some in self-defense situations, and some just mountain climbing in the Alps, having their folder frozen shut thanks to moist snow getting in the mechanism. :)

Land Owner Right of Way trumps Forest Managers. I've been blazing rough trail for the owners.

In a survival situation if i need to clear a trail or wood for a shelte ri will do so, and can do so, without repercussions

this is a trail;

Surprise... another great thread has turned into the everpopular fixed blade vs folder debate....

Never fails. Even in the threads asking what kinds of folders people take with them it still turns into "my fixed blade is better than your folder," well no duh. Fixed blades will obviously outlast a folder, but that wasn't the question at hand - in those kinds of threads of course ;).

It's an interesting phenomenon. It seems to start, typically, with someone stating something completely absurd, like for example that it's easier to avoid breaking a folding knife than a fixed blade. :D

LOL, my a$$. A fixed would definately outlast a folder, even I have to admit that, and I love folders better than any fixed blade. I would never say "my folder will outlast your fixed blade because I'm smarter than you." If that were true, then I would only have my one folder in the bush because it would last "forever". As much as I love my Emerson Commander, I still carry a backup somewhere, whether it's in my pack or in my other pocket (if it's another folder).

Don't forget it also deviated into the sub-category "moras are the best thing since sliced bread vs. moras suck *ss".
I swear Skammer has a super power that instantly alerts him when someone somewhere on internet forums types
"M O R A" and then instantaneously transports him to a keyboard to comment! lol.
:D

LMAO!!! No offense to skam, but that was funny :D.

Having a fixed blade over a folder AFTER falling through ice on a lake or stream seems like the better of the two. Reaching out and sticking that fixed blade in the ice to pull yourself out. Can you imagine trying to get your folder out while you are bobbing around in the cold water. I do carry two folders ever day but I allso carry to fixed blades every day too. It would be alot faster to reach down and pull my fixed blade out from its deep sheath than to try and get my folder out of it's pouch or pocket and then have to open it. I have fallen through some ice but only up to my chest I was crossing a little brook and not to far from home when it happened. (thank God )That was bad enough but trying to get my folder out vs my fixed blade would be no contest.
