Bad trade with gnw1209: no comm. or knife

I agree, Haze.
A lot of kids (Including me) get/got up to a little illegal activity; stealing sweets from the corner shop, taking ciggies from their mum's purse. But stealing peoples knives over the internet is a whole different kettle of fish. It takes effort, ingenuity and guile. This is how young con artists start. I hope the kid turns his life around, but I truly doubt it.

Do you think the victims will have trust issues now?

Are they going to have trust issues:confused:? It's a knife, come on.......I don't think anyone is going to lay awake at night over this. When you trade online, your taking a risk and should know there is a chance you could get ripped off.
Con artists shouldn't be accepted in this community. That's why we have G,B&U; so everyone knows when there is someone stealing knives. No one should trade with him after this if they care about their knives, simple as that. This kid doesn't deserve to be hung in the town square for stealing a few knives, he's 14. Someone needs to give him a whoopin and not let him near the computer until he can use it responsibly.

sounds like one thing is unanimous, a can of whoopass is needed! (for his own good):D

Perhaps, Kimo.

I know it worked on me when I was an unruly young colt. Of course, those were very different days ... the culture's not the same now.

Still, people themselves haven't changed. How can the boy learn to "man up" if he's never seen and felt the consequences?

Update:

I received my knives back today. The SOD LE was sent new but now has some scuffing on the blade. I am out shipping and insurance cost and whatever the difference is between "new" and "used" for a SY SOD LE. However, I am VERY happy this did not turn out to be a total loss.

Would the young man have returned the knives if I had not sent him an email listing the law enforcement agencies I had contacted to report his criminal activity or if Jeff had not called his family? Perhaps, but I think it is somewhat doubtful.

The "trust" issue that several have mentioned in this thread is obviously not the kind that one loses sleep over. As adults we have plenty of family and work issues to be concerned about, so if anything keeps me up at night it certainly won't be a dishonest 14 year old. However, the "trust" issue that is compromised is that of new members and future trades. I have always thought it appropriate and respectful for trade items to be sent at the same time as both parties are assuming risk. At this point I will no longer send my trade items until the new member's parcel has arrived.

As far as "to ban" or "not to ban"---his intent was unquestionably criminal, but I feel he should be treated the same as any other forum member. If another forum member was caught red-handed in a similar situation would he or she be banned? If so, the answer is obvious. If not, then then he should be dealt with in a manner that is consistent with whatever penalties past offenders received or didn't receive....

Just my .02 cents fellow forum members! :)

Maybe the kid should have to pay for the damage!!!

Good point. I am a fairly new member myself and this could affect peoples trust in me. I know I am thankful for the G,B&U section, helps weed out the trouble-makers......

I got my knives back today as well. Glad you got yours also Brian. I have some issues to list about this whole situation. I and other members were ripped off cold, not a litte bit, but stone cold ripped off. Had Brian and I not worked together on this, I feel we and others may still be out of our knives to some extent. I actually spoke to Garrett and he seems like a typical 14 year old who got caught, with a slight "oh well" attitude. As for my knives, that is where I am another kind of pissed off....!!! The Necker had a huge file gouge on the spine. It had to really take it down on the belt sander to get rid of it, then sanding for some time to get it back to shape. The BK9 was thrashed!!! Garrett got himself some spray paint, green and orange to be exact and went to town! He then tried his best to strip it before sending it back to me. He managed to sand the grips, leave orange paint in all the back grip panel, hard to get areas. The blade still had green paint on it and heavy horizontal scratches! I wish he had mentioned this to me when I spoke to him!!!!! I would have told him to leave it and I would have cleaned it myself. Again another hour wasted on this situation fixing my BK9. Oh well live and learn, and YES I AM PISSED. I am a very forgiving person but I keep coming back to the fact I and other BF members were ripped off in a cold and exact manor. What really frosts my ass is how he was so quick to offer trades knowing he was screwing BF members. Now all in all, I am happy to have my knives back. I am out $ 10.35 shipping, oh well. The pressing matter for me remains his status here on BF.
I can go on for hours about trust & learning from mistakes, but I really only have two things to say:

1. Thanks for all the support from my BF brothers.
2. Garret needs to be banned from this BF community.

HE IS A NO GOOD THIEF, PLAIN & SIMPLE!!!

After what I & other BF members have been through, please ban gwn1209 from BF, Thank you.

Although I was not involved in any trading with Garrett, I would agree with you.
He needs to be banned..... His actions were premeditated. That kind of behavior is totally unacceptable from any member here, irregardless of their age. Had this issue not been pursued by members here, he would have gotten away with stealing, which was his original intent.
.

THEN to find out the knives you traded were basically trashed
Nothing like pouring salt on a wound .

Also, Kirko, man you are the best, thank you!!!!
I just sent you an e-mail and glad to hear you like yours as well.

I received my Benchmade 940 in the mail today and I'm not happy. When I mailed it out it was brand new complete with everything that comes with it from the factory. The knife was returned without the owners manual and has been sharpened. Now I cannot sell it as NIB and will occur a financial loss for the difference.

I thought about it a while and decided to contact Jean (Grandma) about it. Well guess who answers the phone ... Mr. Garrett. The conversation started off pleasant and I was discussing the condition of the knife as it was sent and returned when I mentioned that the knife had been sharpened. At that point, Mr. Garret informed me that that I was wrong and said that the knife had never been used or sharpened. Well Mr. Garrett obviously didn't remember the email that he sent me after he received the knife that said:

yes i love it, it was perfect other than benchmades screwed up grinds but i fixed that in under 3 min

Garrett,

According to USPS tracking the BM940 was delivered today. I just wanted to check and make sure that you received it in good condition and are satisfied with the transaction. Once you have a chance to look it over, please let me know.

Thanks,
Greg

When I reminded him of the email he took the "high road" and hung up on me. Now I know that many of you (like myself) was hoping that Garrett would have learned a lesson by all of this but from what I experienced today, it hasn't happened yet! Not only did he attempt to steal my knife (as well as numerous others) but he continues to be untruthful and when confronted with the truth, runs and hides. As I said earlier I had given this much thought ... The phone call today was simply intended to let him (or Jean) know of the additional costs that I had incurred because the knife had been used so that he might understand the total costs of his behavior. But after Garrett's reaction I decided to ask for reimbursement for the costs that I have incurred.

After I calmed down I tried the number again but it went to voice mail, so I started leaving a message. About half way through the message, I saw that I was receiving a call from the Garrett's number so I picked it up. This time it was Jean. I explained what had occurred during my conversation with Garrett and she, agai,n apologized for his behavior. She said that he has a real hard time telling the truth and then said that as far as she knew, Garrett has sharpened and used all the knives that he had received. I then let her know how the value of a knife drops when it is used and/or sharpened as compared to NIB and she seemed surprised. All in all it was a very pleasant conversation and she has agreed to pay the difference between what I paid for the knife and what it sells for plus the shipping costs I incurred.

Now, I don't know if I will actually go through with it or not, but for those out there that sent knives to Garret, you might want to look them over very carefully when you get them back. And if your think you can call Garrett and hear the TRUTH, don't waste your time unless you enjoy being hung up on. I hope and pray that Jean can get some help with him. She seems like a very nice lady that really has her hands full. Oh yeah, in light of today's experience, I have changed my mind and think Garrett should be Banned.

Greg

Ladies and gentlemen, this experience has been a multi-faceted disaster. Has everyone gotten their knives back? Obviously, the child is a thief and we need to ban him. But banning him before he sent the knives back might have delayed their return.

For those of you who think he should be pursued or prosecuted for costs and damages, let me know how much you're willing to kick in towards the lawyer. Easy to suggest, expensive to do.

At the head of this forum, Spark listed several points of advice you need to read:
Sticky: Suggestions for having a good Buying / Selling / Trading experience.

If you make a deal with someone who has no reputation here, suggest he send his part of the deal first, and you will send yours when his arrives. If he doesn't like that, I suggest you tell him to read this thread.

Check for FEEDBACK, look at his profile, ask others what they know about him. Click on his profile and read through his recent posts, that may tell you something about him, too.

It's your money. Think before you spend it.

Well I tried to have faith, but I see ya'll are right and he has not learned the error of his ways. If he is going to "punk out" like that then I agree something more should be done. This is ridiculous....if he is still going to lie and try and worm his way out then obviously there is no teaching him the "easy" way.

I hate to hear he jacked up your 940........that should be a crime itself!
