Bad trade with gnw1209: no comm. or knife

7:15 in Oregon. Might be good to catch the father before he goes to work.

Glad to help, check out the GBU forum, the saga continues!

Looks like at least two threads have been merged now. Despite the rules, I think the threads in the two other subforums might have been allowed to stand just for a day or so (maybe they have?) such that people who might be considering a trade could see the situation. Many members are not even aware of the GB&U subforum.

Also however, Jeff, you might have sent an email to the moderators of those boards and explained why you posted in those subforums (because 14-year-old Garrett was targetting those brand names). Best to keep the communication flowing on all fronts. The mods here are a good bunch, and I'm sure they hate scammers as much or more than anyone.

Guys, I may make some progress with this later today!
ANYONE who has shipped a knife to this kid/gnw1209, and got burned like me, PLEASE contact me ASAP with your name and knife(s) involved. I would like to see this through. I hope there is still some good that can come out of this mess.

Please only those who got burned!

Thanks

Generally semi-anonymous trades by mail are a bad thing. There's really no way to make sure you'll get what you wanted, or do anything if you don't. Good luck, though.

I almost think this thread should be required reading for anyone intending to do business in the Knife Exchange

Quite the Cautionary Tale

i will be returning all knives or items i have taken im very sorry about what i have done and i hope you will forgive upon recipt of your knives

To bad it had to come to the threat of legal action for you to do the right thing. At least it is a step in the right direction, hopefully if nothing else this is a lesson on how to act like an adult and do the right thing.

Please follow thru with your comitment on returning other peoples property, all this has done is hurt the knife community, and Blade Forums.

Wow....How many people have you ripped off? Get treatment too while you are feeling all contrite.

Actually, a situation like this is an exception, my best deals were buying knives from fellow forum members.

Well, the parties in limbo at least have a confession and an apology. Hopefully, we'll see all knives (and items) returned safely within the week.

Young Garrett should also reimburse those who made trades with him at least for the shipping costs they incurred.

+1

To add: I tend to check out people fairly thoroughly before I make a deal in which I send a knife or money. That's not to say that I won't get burned eventually. It's worth the $25 just to be able to search for threads and look through the GB&U. There's a wealth of trade/sale history here.

I still think a call to ma & pa is in order here. I am sure they would love to know what their pride and joy has been up to.

Some lessons come hard in life, thievery should not be taken lightly.

Jeff may have already contacted one or both parents. I am hoping for an update when all of this works its way out.

Guys, good news!!!!!!
I actually spoke to Garrett in person as well as his guardian (grandmother). First of all his grandmother is a wonderful lady to speak with on the phone. We had a very long conversation where I gave her a detailed account
of what young Mr. Watts had been up to. Turns out she and I went through the knives/gear Garrett had hoarded in his less than stellar outings. His grandmother assures me everything will be returned very shortly via usps with dc. There were two items that we could not match up: a swiss army knife & a Camelback pack. If your are out these items, please send me an e-mail and I will try and secure these & have them delivered to the original owners.
As for young Garrett, we had a awkard but pleasent conversation. I gave him some strong opinion and harsh reality of what could have happened. He did seem receptive. I hope the kid turns out OK. I am still pissed, but feel the kid can be salvaged & learn from this ordeal.

The grandmother seems genuine & I hope for the return of everyones gear/knives.

I think we did the right stuff here!!!!

Agreed. I know if I had done something as dumb as this my folks would have opened up a can of Whup-Ass on my behind. Of course that was back in the day when parents could actually spank their kids, not like nowadays where a kid can tell his/her parent what they could do to themselves with little or no repercussions, but I digress.

Years ago when I worked plain clothes security I called in the cops several times on kids I caught stealing. We didn't press charges but did take them into store back rooms for interrogation and to bring them just short of soiling their pants. I think they learned their lessons and now think twice about stealing.
Glad to see the outcome of this is looking positive.

Thanks, Jeff. I hope the young man learns from this mistake and chooses the better path.
