Batoning, what is the controversy?

Isn't this a "Wilderness and survival skills" thread?

It is and the next time you hear of someone needing to hammer a knife through steel or concrete in a survival/wilderness situation please let me know. Until then, I will continue to baton with my knives.

Hey Don, I am not slamming any knife, to each his own Bro! But a survival tool, knife or otherwise, needs to be able to handle a little abuse. A "survival knife"!

Yeah, I would be fairly concerned if one of my RATs failed to baton through something reasonable in the field that I needed to baton through, as unlikely as that might be. But the fact that "my toys want cut it" in the real world of hacking through cinderblocks and urinals or whatever else those retards are doing certainly doesn't hurt my feeling none. :)

Urinals are best for sharpening IMHO

The real controversy is not simply batoning, but batoning with a big knife -and further more the big knife philosophy, which they do not agree with.

I would use a crescent wrench to drive a nail in something if I absolutely had to. I would not say that there is a proper way to do it.
Of course there is, it's the way that gets the nail driven, doesn't break the wrench, and doesn't leave you bloody or battered. Just as holding the wrench with both hands, biting your tongue, and closing your eyes when you swing would be one of the wrong ways to do it.

Why is there not a proper way to do it with a wrench? Because it's the wrong tool? Is there an improper way to do it with a hammer? I would think using the wrong tool the right way could be as safe as using the right tool the wrong way.

Not with my survival knife. Many have hit a knife at the wrong angle and broke what would otherwise have been a good knife. Do it with caution.

Welcome winbag338. Many is a bit descriptive, but there is no doubt that it does happen. For some of us folks who monitor the forums regularly - because we are a bit insane, you get a perspective that there are breaks that happen and occasionally they occur during batoning. This being the largest knife forum in the world with thousands of posts per week, one actually sees this occasionally buy by no means often.

I would think for example that the frequency of users reporting destruction of knife tips by using them as screwdrivers would far outweight the self reports of batoning failure. Likewise, the number of knives lost because of misplacement tend to be the most likely source of knife failure.

For me it’s a no brianer, …I don’t worry about batoning.

Buy a Barkie as your batoning knife,

…and give Mike Stewart those sleepless nights. :D

In a survival situation I would be careful with my knife no matter what I was doing with it and wouldn't do anything to risk it without a darn good reason.

I agree that loosing a knife is the greatest danger. Another point for me is that if it is a survival situation, that would most likely mean that I was not expecting the thing to happen and would most likely NOT have a big fixed blade with me either because of laws of travel and/or packing a big heavy knife is something I would probably only do if I were hunting big game. However if I am big game hunting, i am usually equipped for emergencies or unexpected longer stays outdoors.

I can't believe this is on page 7. Why is it that a little thing like batoning generates such a heated discussion and causes such rifts? Why don't we have 7 page long discussions on shelter building or firestarting or water purification or signaling methods? Batoning? Really?

That is only because everybody agrees that tarps are for sissies :p

-yeah it kind of amazes me too....then again, it has been a constant point of disagreement along with thick vs. thin blade since I joined this place :o

So I probably shouldn't say anything about batoning with my 3/32 O1 Jk knife?:foot:
