Bear Grylls Knife

I don't post much here as I prefer to read all the other interesting posts and pretty much stay away from the controversy etc.

I just caught up with this thread now and have been reading with great interest all the comments good and bad surrounding this issue. Firstly I think its a great knife priced out of my range for a knife but that doesn't mean that if you can afford it that it is a nonsensical buy.

Secondly I've been rather interested in the comments on Bear himself such as "He wasn't in the British Special Forces" or that by being in 21 SAS which is the territorial forces of the British military that he is somehow less qualified and inferior then those in the regular army 22 SAS.

I think it is rather arrogant to call him a "weekend warrior" which is a derisive term considering that all SAS volunteers undergo the same Selection and training phases in order to become badged. They have also been deployed in the same theatres of operations.

Would you also consider your Reserve Force (National Guard) Special Forces formations to be inferior? If so maybe apply and do their selection. Then you can speak from personal conviction.

to me its all about atitude, i dont care if he's SAS, special forces or special ed he just seems dorky to me, and the show is so "put on" to me its very hard to take seriuosly, now if ya like him good for you, i enjoy watching the show myself, but i also enjoy "hogan knows best" & "living lohan" (my girlfriend michelle saysi watch wayyy too much reality TV lol) but i dont take any of them seriously.

now YMMV lol.

now that les guy on the other show imho offers a lot more serious survival info and i can take him a little more seriously without rolling my eyes and groaning & thinking "what a dork".

Bear's show is entertainment, not survival education. He displays unwise and wreckless techniques and decisions, so after the first two shows, I quit watching. Nobody in their right mind would really give a crap what military unit he was in when he displays idiotic behavior that sets a bad example for people who are really trying to learn about survival.

with the euro coming back to earth and the u.s. dollar gaining strength, the knife isn't priced so preposterously anymore...

From one coastal Georgian to another, HD..., I like the knife. Do you want to sell it before I order my own? "Les Stroud is a punk. He couldn't survive ten minutes in downtown Ellabell!!!" --- Bubba Cy.

I can't believe the amount of people of this post that complain about the price. Half of the people complaining own 12 sebbies. wow.

But for that price I could buy two sebbies or an umnumzaan and a small sebenza :D

On a serious note, if you like it, buy it. From what I remember (this thread is a few months old :o) a bit of the discussion was that for the price you could have a time tested, almighty Busse for that price, or something of equal or better quality for the money spent on that "bear grylls knife."

edit: a year old

for that kinda dollar ya could get a mad dog custom ATAK, or a good busse, either of which would be better imho than the bear knife, best of all they wouldnt have his name stamped on them lol.

personally, i can see $400 or so for a sebbie a lot easier than $600 or whatever it is the bear knife runs.

if it was me i would very much prefer the mad dog or the busse anyway.

oh and as far as price i will pay for quality, i have $1200 folders so i am not one to shy away because of price IF the product is imho worth it & will hold value, which imho the bear knife fails on both counts.

what exactly is it that makes the bear knife worth that kinda dollar?? the steel? the design? bears input?? what?

"IF the product is imho worth it & will hold value, which imho the bear knife fails on both counts."

IMHO -- In My Humble Opinion.

Everyone says that but not many who use it seem to humble. You've spent $1200 on a folder, great. More power to you, seriously. All I'm saying is how come this guy gets so much flack thrown at him when he felt it was worth it. He never claimed it was a super knife or that it cured cancer, all he said was that he liked it. Plain and simple. So many questions on these forums are answered with "buy what you like, like what you buy", in fact, it's someone's sig too. Then, when this guy goes and does it, the good folk of blade forums beats on him for it. Just seems strange to me.

well he gets a lotta flack because he is so dorky lol and the knife is imho overpriced for what it is.

if ya like it so buy one, wont bother me at all, but i would never consider it myself.

and again, ya quoted me but didnt answer my question, what makes it worth that kinda dollar? the design? materials? the designer? bear? what??? why do YOU like it so?? i would say the reason its so high dollar is its connection to bear, has to be as nothing else about it is special or revolutionary thats for sure. like i said for that kinda dollar theres better knives available & lots of them.

"imho" is my HONEST opnion too by the way, not humble, though i am very humble lol.

and no ones beating anyone up, all i am saying is i think its overpriced, wayy overpriced, for what it is.

The knife is overpriced.

Les Shroud seems as inept as Bear. For all we know there could be 20 people out in the woods with him, just not shown on camera. Bear doesnt pretend to be out there to show you how to survive. He is entertainment, pure and simple.

The day I watched Les go fishing with a shoelace, the spring out of drum brakes, and a piece of bubble gum as a bobber...all in water that you could see was only a foot or so deep...that was the day I knew for sure that he was at least as big a clown as Bear.

He's no clown. He just isn't quite a Bass Pro and certainly won't be shown on Buckmasters. There's a reason Les starves quite often. He isn't the best fisherman or hunter. But at least he's not showing life risking stupid stunts as survival.

:) I don't like the knife. I just find it odd that I hear time and again from people here to "buy what you like, for there is the best value". Then when this guy does (who admits that, yes, the knife is overpriced) gets constantly shut down for it. Not a big deal, just found it to be a stray from the normal on what is a generally friendly forum.

me and my girlfriend were laying in bed watching the episode when he wrings the moisture outta the elephant dung and drinks it, it made her barf luckily she had a trashcan by her (she was cleaning out her purse) or it woulda been a mess lol, she told me "are ya happy now" and "turn that nasty SOB off" lol, suffice to say she is NOT a fan lol..

And yes, thats disgusting. :)

Remember that for europeans this knife is in about the same price leage as your Busses and Stripers and Reeves and so on. Also, Grylls never said you have to buy this knife if you want to survive. It's a custom knife made for him, and I don't see why the knifemaker shouldn't keep selling this knife to those who see it on tv and want one. It's not like his other knives are that much cheaper.

Thanks for the laugh of today. This got me going pretty good. That is hilarious. That is one heck of a story.

You need to tell your girlfriends that your anonymous world wide internet knife buddies told you to tell her that "She needs to toughen up"......AND.......""Real women" need to learn these things. She might just find herself dehydrated in a jungle in an elephant inhabited forrest of Africa or India and need to re-hydrate herself by using Bears elephant shit squeezing method or water procurement". Tell her if she doesn't want to learn these must know survival techniques, you'll have to replace her with someone who will.

If all else fails and she's not going to learn these life saving real world survival methods, and you feel nice enough to keep her around, let her know you are just being nice keeping her around and she at least needs to make her self useful and "give you some".

See how she likes that. :D

PS

You're welcome in advance. I have a way with women.

I have no doubt that Grylls' knife is a nice one... I know that that a Sebenza is nice... I know that a Busse 'ASH' is nice - especially the currently available skinny variant. I have seen the latter two - and could have both of them for what that Grylls' knife would cost - and get them sooner. It is axiomatic. I am a retired college instructor... my IRA tanked last week and my Teacher's Retirement just doesn't provide the funding for either choice. I'm too sorry to work now, recall the retired teacher statement, so I guess I'll do without either. Besides, I thought my Buck Vanguard was a great bush knife once... then I discovered Bark River a year ago. I've spent enough on bushy knives in the last year than a collection of Sebenzas, Busses, and Grylls' knives would cost. It's all in what you like, want, and can afford.

I wonder if they have the earlier plain blade Grylls knife available... I'll bet slurping termites from the serrated variant would do a number on the lips and tongue. Maybe one could buy both... get a 'two-fer special'. It makes as much sense as a dozen Sebenzas - or a bucket of Buck 110s (Okay, mine is a smallish bucket!). Like I said, whatever you like, want, and can afford.

Les Stroud is the real deal. At 47, he is tired of beating himself up for a week at a time - seldom eatting as well as he should, while carrying 60+ lb of camera gear. This is from a interview in Papua New Guinea, where he was about to film his final adventure - this is his last season. He lived the life long before 'Survivorman', having his family, ie, wife and daughters, live off the grid in Canada. In a CA jungle adventure, he severely cut a finger with his multi-tool's blade - a proper knife would have been better. He did carry a Buck 119, a $34 US-made 6" fb, in some of his Canadian winter shows.

So any updates on performance? I happen to like the knife shape and overall construction a lot. Please just an update, I know about Bear and his hotel habits and have watched the show many times, guy is crazy but you have to respect someone that can chew on a freshly killed snake

What is RWL Steel by the way? Stainless?

OMG, the thread that would not die! RWL 34 is a powdered metal very fine grained expensive Swedish stainless steel that is very tough and is tempered to about 60RC. Honestly, I haven't used the knife lately, but it is a very fine knife. They are less expensive now that the Pound is doing even worse than the dollar. I like the less expensive SS Bravo-1 from Bark River better. It's in CPM154.
