Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

I almost forgot the BK11 and 14. Both are polished to a satin sheen with 800 grit w/d and green compound. Final edges are convex.

Hey Granite, The 11 gets the ironwood in the picture and the 14 will get black walnut. I cut and roughed out the scales, but did not put them in the photo.

WW, The video showing your knife cutting effortlessly through cardboard was enlightening. Hope to see more of your work and perhaps a tutorial teaching your stonewashing method.

Any questions just let me know! Awesome 11&14 as well!!

Damn WW. That hex hawk looks sick bro!

Hawk - impeccable work as always!

I really love the shape you gave that 16. The swedging is ever so subtle. Of course, now it's really not a 16 anymore, even if that's how it started out. I'd love to see what you come up with for a blank piece of 1½ x 12 steel.

Thanks Granite, since being bitten by the Wharncliffe bug, I designed these two and started a small one using some heat treated .125" 420 scrap. Not the best, but it is ok for practice. I have been using the beveled spine rather than the larger swedge I formerly used. Polishing for all three 16s will go up to 800 W/D+ green compound for a low satin sheen..

I think i figured up something for stonewashing large knives last night. It would be a bit tiring and time consuming though. But it wouldnt take up any space.

Involves a large PVC pipe with a handle at one side to turn it, built into the side of a work table...

WW, what I'm thinking is you might not get the same effect as the dryer method, or it would take longer since the media isn't hitting as hard as it prolly does in the dryer. I'd get the biggest diameter pipe you could find, maybe even a sonotube, and maybe not make it so long. then just a belt and a little slow speed motor to run the thing. I've seen stuff like this done with rollerblade bearings to support the tube. I really think it needs to be motorized, or at least driven by a bicycle on a stand....that way you could work out at the same time. Damn, now I've got all these ideas crashing into each other in my brainpan....let me look up some stuff and see if I can make a simple design.

I really do like that 11 and 14. I'd love to be able to get my 24 looking something like those two.

The bicycle sounds like a cool way to operate it!!! A motor sounds even easier though LOL... But if i could figure out how to hook a bike to id do that!! I like the exercise while working idea LOL, and i could alternate it and unhook the bike and use my hands to crank it... A full on home gym HAHA :D

The idea was it would be like its in the dryer, a mini dryer, with the abrasives... And NO bottle.

I need it to be long, to fit long blades, but if it were wide enough i could reduce the length some as it could go in diagonally. Id want it at least long enough to fit a 20" long knife. That way i wouldnt have to worry about needing to make a longer one later.

I think it may work ok. Probably not the best way though. Even in the dryer it gets caught on the "flaps" and spins around a lot, its not crashing around the entire time. I get more aggressive scratches by hand, thats why i always shake it up by hand before and after it goes in the dryer... Just to add more aggressive marks. Same thing with the PVC pipe idea, id prolly still shake the hell out of the pipe before and after spinning it.

One thing is for certain... My wife is eventually going to cut me off from using her dryer... and her vacuum LMAO She hollered at me saturday when she opened it up and seen steel and wood dust that i cleaned up in the basement LOL I normally empty the container... I forgot that time :D
