Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

ooh, those are gonna be nice when you sand 'em up a bit. woo!

I saw you using that at the Gathering, daiz, and picked up some tonight when I grabbed the Bush Oil. Also got a Zhen Nakiri kit knife, as they are on sale this month at Woodcraft.
I'd say that for really good, consistent wood protection, tung oil or some variant (Watco Danish Oil, Tried and True, Waterlox) would give much better and longer lasting protection. So far, for knife scales at least, I've used only the Minwax wipe on poly. easy to apply and haven't noticed any water damage; those knives all get washed somewhat frequently.

Got in a bit of grinding at the end of a long day on the middle and bottom monster.

Amazing how therapeutic it is.

I may never get them sharp enough to cut anything, but I seem to have achieved magnetic.

These BK 16s, in various stages of modification, are nearing completion. The middle 16 is a drop point companion to the Wharncliffe. The handles are very comfortable. The fourth knife was designed by former professor from my under grad days. I made it as a gift for him commemorating 46 years of friendship with him and his wife.

Very nice hawkhead!

I love that top one! All three are just fantastic though. Makes me want to mod some more 16's myself. :)

Awesome job and I really can't wait to see how these look when you complete them.

Keep up the great work and I hope you are doing well my friend.

Thanks Dex, good to hear from you. I'm making the walnut scales from my large chunk of wood a buddy of mine gave me some time ago. The nickel silver stock I will be using for the pins has not yet arrived. BTW your web site looks excellent.

The fourth knife was made from an already hardened piece of 440c, .187" thick. The blade 4.25" long and 1.125" high was shaped and convexed on my Sears 2x42 belt grinder and finished with diamond files, wet or dry 180 to 600 grit and lots of elbow grease. The hidden tang handle is walnut capped with buffalo horn. The guard is nickel silver.
I have some scrap hardened 420 that I am turning into a series of Wharncliffe knives.

WOW HAWKHEAD very nice work. Tough act to follow but I'll share my little 10 minute project today... Had a few minutes of free time so I was going to just touch up the edge on my 5, well I took off the scales and decided to repaint under the scales. This time though I thought I would try a little experiment with some spray on rubber. First I taped everything up like normal, then shot it with some black spray paint meant for metal, then while that was tacky I shot it with a thin coat of plasti-dip. Also shot the tang side of the scales to form a sort of "seal" or gasket between everything with the rubber. Also shot the bolts, so we will see in a couple months how the wear and tear is under there. I had at first shot it with clear coat when I originally stripped the knife, but it seems from just little vibrations it wore it off where it needed it. So we shall see if this is a little more resilient cause I have had some better luck with just black spray paint anyways on my BK2/14. Always fun to experiment.

Here is how I tape it up with a little hanger on the top...

Black coat.

Then the rubber coat. I took the tape off here to get more around the edges. The rubber will get scraped off the areas I dont want it.

Thought I would share, have a good day yall!

Nice work IWHAF!

I look forward to hearing how it holds up!!

I finished the handles on this one. Just need to put an edge on her now.

Thanks Woody, we shall see!

Oh and Awesome job on that blade!!!! Looks real good man! Doesnt it feel good? Its like a swelling of pride holding a knife you build with your hands. I really like how the stone wash turned out with your logo. Once you get an edge on it you'll have to make a video of some cutting demos, I am planning on doing that once everything gets back from Todd.

Lookin' good, WW!!

Modified my brand-new (3 hrs) Kershaw Camber already:

Thanks bud, and i really like the mods to that kershaw!

Thanks Woody, we shall see!

Thanks man, and it is a great feeling indeed!!

Its hard to really capture stonewash in pictures, depending on the angle and the lighting it looks lighter and darker.... but i really like how it came out as well.

I plan to try and finish the edge up before i go to sleep. and i will for sure make a video of it cutting once its finished.

Thanks again guys for all the support and help along the way!

And here we are!! My first knife completed.
