Finished up the cleanup/sharpening to my wife's uncle's KA-BAR's. The 1280 was cleaned, sharpened to a convex (knocked all the way down) around 20 degrees with a microbevel put on by stone to help it hold up against chopping, close to mirror polish. Run a similar edge on my BK9 and it does so well. Also scrubbed and water "proofed" the sheath. For those who have not gotten to play with one of these knives they are a lot of fun type of knife. It cleaned up real well... Now the KA-BAR USMC was a trouble maker... the edge was fairly well GONE, the tip was all dinged up, it had its clip sharpened, the sheath was falling apart, etc etc etc. SO! Revived the sheath with beeswax (fully impregnated) and my skull balms, then had to take it to my grinder to knock the edges back straight, I think it'll hold up now. Also gave the handle the skull balm/beeswax treatment. After that I ground the edge back into shape. Just ended up free handing it off my belt grinder and work sharp, and I resharpened the clip. Also scrubbed the coating with wax and scotchbright to give it a bit of a polish. Thing is a straight razor now and it looks a bit spiffier. Hopefully he will like what I have done... also have one of his kershaws to fix up, but its going to be a full takedown clean up kinda job...
