Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

The pinstripe is ruby red. Stupid fluorescent lights.

Sick.

Thanks, fellas, glad you like it.
I'll get some natural light pics after it's been extracted from its wrapping paper...

CF, it's actually a smidge less tapered than I like! This was one of my first ~3/32" ground paring blades that's been in my drawer for about 3 years waiting for a handle. At the time, I was hesitant to reach for the FFG. You can see it stops about 0.100" short of the spine. Ideally that taper would start nearly back at the plunge! A FFG on a p-ground 3/32" paring blade is so lovely... stouter than factory, but not so thick as to be wedgy. Yep, I said wedgy. :D

BK9 Mod 4 Re-profiling the tang/handle.
Ground out just needs a little fine tuning.

forgot to mention the other day: nice to see you over here on this forum -- sweet mods, too.

Thanks bro! Good to be here, I've been enjoying seeing all the cool mods and beautiful blades shown here.

Just finished stripping the black factory coating off the 9, hopefully I'll get to put some scales on it in another day or two after the holidays. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in what I found under all that coating. Shades of blue (in the middle of the blade) and no heat has touched the blade, all the re-profiling of the spine was done with a file only.

A few more progress pics on the 9. Got liners and scales epoxied the other day, then epoxied them to the knife last night. I decided to go with the brass tube thong holes for pins for now at least as they're the easiest to remove if I decide to make some different scales for it or use a different mounting method. Drilling the tang was a major PITA! You can see some of the coloration/oxidation left from softening the tang to be able to drill it. This really needed to be done anyway though as the tang was way "Too Hard" especially since I removed as much metal as I did in the ricasso area during the re-profile. All I had left over from my knife making days was some OD green canvas micarta and black and gray fiber material so I just used what I already had. The liners are two black and two gray (each .030) each side.
Thanks for taking a look!

PS. Sadly I lost my logo/etch marks when I lapped the knife back in.

Pollock: I'll give you props for even trying to drill that tang; I gave up when I completely re-did my 7. I was thinking of tubes for pin as well, but HT'd 1095cv is too damned hard to drill out - at least with the tools I had access to. That 9 is looking good!

Thanks bro! I use to work with regular 1095 all the time, but this was my first experience with the CV and you're right it was hard as heck! I have a floor model drill press and used it on the lowest speed setting (and a Drill Doctor to keep the bits sharp) with plenty of cutting fluid. The middle and rear holes weren't too bad but the front, well that was another story. ;-)

I have a big floor standing drill press, too....but after dulling the first two bits (TiNi - used the same process as you......) I just decided that discretion was the better part of valor. In other words, I gave up. Then again, I'm pretty much a rank amateur when i come to the knifemaking thing.....but I have fun - and drilling hardened steel wasn't fun in the least.

Yes, I had the same experience on a 15. That last Freekin hole...
I eventually got it. Someone mentioned a carbon tipped bit but I think I'll pass on any future endeavors on that line

That 9 is coming along great!

Thanks bro! Yeah I don't think I'd attempt another one, just too dang hard.

I was finishing up some detail sanding on the BK9 and thought to myself why the heck am I worried about sanding scratches on a knife I'm going to take to the woods and use the heck out of!?!?!? LOL It's not a super finish but I'm done with all the mods I plan to do with it, now to sharpen it up and head for the hills. ;-)
I'm not 100% satisfied but I knew when I started the mods that the only way I would be with a knife would be to make my own and with my health conditions I didn't feel safe to do it. Even though it's not exactly what I wanted I'm still happy with the way it turned out. With all the metal removal/re-profiling and the use of the much heavier micarta scales I was still able to keep the balance point exactly where it was originally which is 1" in front of the scales so I'm really glad for that. The weight is down from just over 16oz (factory) now to 14.8 and even though I only took 1/4" of the length off it feels much more nimble to me than it did originally. I lost my BK9/BK&T logos when lapping the knife back in unfortunatley. :-(

Thanks for taking a look!
