Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Thats a good idea mbay!!

I dont have any cold air intake, or air conditioning system or id for sure do it :D

Our heater is gas ran and we have radiator type heaters throughout the house and the only air conditioner we have here is window a/c units in the bedrooms and then open windows and fans down stairs.

Is this for real? Im skeptical. LOL

You just mean it was toxic to fish right???

Maybe it was Spanish flu to bats. I don't remember. I think it was the Ketonemthylethylchloronitratebacondeathsauce. It's still good stuff though. :D

Final word on angle grinders. Get any of them. Mr. Terrio is right on the money. Use good cutoff discs. I have them from Milwaukee to Harbor Freight and they all work quite well. I do have a very good trick for you that I'll share on the phone with you when you get a chance.

That's good, I figured if you thought your wife was going to kill you for using the vacuum, wait til she goes to wipe some of your grinding dust off her dining room table and it scratches. Some wives might not think that was funny. ;)

It's always the things that end in _____bacondeathsauce that cause the problems.

And the tastiness.

I had never heard of adding baking soda before... neato! ...I put dish soap in there and some jet dry, but I'll have to try the baking soda. Thanks!

It's not fool-proof but it helps. I often work on 3-4 blades at a time, letting one cool off completely while working on the next couple... I've seen 1084 and especial O1 bloom orange in minutes. You still want to clean/dry your blades at the end of a grinding session, and oil them lightly if they're going to sit around for a while.

Mobil1 works great for preventing rust on stored blades - a little dab'll do ya, just smear it around. You should have a quart in the shop anyway... more on that later. tease...

Re: dust in the house... wives don't like it when they step on metal curlicues from drilling steel, either. Wipe your feet (or better yet leave your work shoes in the shop) when you come in for supper.

Yes! Learned this lesson the hard way... Had the knife all clean before taping, after glue up found pitting... So like you said I have just started coating things in oil religiously even before taping up, a few seconds could save me hours of avoidable work. Good advice.

Is it later??? :D

Thanks WW!

Question for you angle grinder pro's. HF also has something called a "cut-off tool." Is that kind of thing not designed for the thick steel of knives? Is the angle grinder better than that and the way to go for someone who has never used one?

Thought id share this here, there is a GAW for beginning knife makers in the community center.

It is a very generous GAW at that.. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1227766-Give-away!!!?p=14059917#post14059917

Wait... wait.... This is going to reduce my chances of winning.... I take back what i said above, dont click the link LMAO -Just kidding :D

Thanks for the heads up, WW.

FYI, here is the prototype dust collector for my grinder:

15017171677_561c28a640_b.jpg

It's made out of some strategically cut and riveted aluminum step flashing, with a vac adapter riveted into the bottom. The next one will enclose the bottom wheel (thinking about a door for easy belt changes) and be sloped on the bottom to direct the dust towards the vac port. Right now it works well enough; I still find some on the floor that isn't getting into the hood. But so far the basement isn't coated with steel dust; this may also be due to a very limited amount of grinding. I'll see how effective it is when I start shaping the MikeKarta®.

ballistol for keeping the blades clean. I can't stand motor oil. yech.

Taken from my WIP thread. Todd is AWESOME!!!

Yeah, I'll bet you say that about ALL the people that heat your steel ;). Glowing review...

LMAO, Subliminal meanings aside, Todd is the only person to heat my steel so far (in the literal sense). And i seriously doubt anyone else would take the time to explain as much and the time to take and post so many pictures of the process... Especially for the price he charged :D

I stand by my original statement, Todd is awesome!!

Even in the subliminal context, no one else ever wanted to post pictures on the internet despite my asking LMAO

Todd's good people, I don't care what Murph says behind his back.

Is it later??? :D

Yes. But not later enough. I can't give away all my brilliant secrets at once, you guys won't let me hang around anymore. :p

Fair enough. I was just wonderin if that was how you get the magic LMAO

Right now im using mineral oil on whatever steel im currently playing with, and using Eezox on the steel i have stored until needed. But even coated with a heavy layer of mineral oil steel seems to want to start rusting in 2 days or so. My basement is pretty humid and damp though, but damn i been thinking i had bad mineral oil or something LMAO

I need to give the mobil1 a try. I cant stand the smell of Eezox. Works good but that smell goes for days.
