Ahh, have to love all you dreamers...
Let me know if there are questions.

Can you give us dreamers a quick rundown of material options that might be possible or plausible.

Like what steels might be redily available for the "BF Project" S110V, M4, ZDP, Vanax 75/35, M390, N360, Elmax, S35VN? Any realistic extreme options? Is a composite blade in the cards at all? I think we all agree S30V is the best cost effective upgraded path that most can live with. (stonewash/tiger striping/polished spine?)

Plus scales, is Carbon Fiber going to send the price way up or a Ti liner? Also is something like one side green digi camo and one side blue digi camo asking to much? Can it be two different scales or need to be the same? (Is there a market for oem aftermarket skyline scales sales)

I think most people agree a low rider clip (like on the cryo) and some extra thumb jumping (flipper too?) would be higher on our list than exactly what blade steel or handle material are used. Can these be done cost effectively?

I think me and EagleScouter have the crazy ideas department covered!

Blue G10 and stonewashed?

Yeah, it's a bit rough and I made a few mistakes but you get the idea.

Leek_Freak, you the man! Exactly what I was thinking! This is in ZDP-189. (Not so secretly pining for S110V, M390, or Vanax 75) I think this configuration (different g10, high-end steel) is, IMHO, the best one that will appeal to the most people at an affordable price.

That would depend completely on several factors, price point being important, but mainly I think if the logo is attractive and not something that a non member thought was ugly then they would be sellable outside of Bladeforums. I think it is possible that all would sell to members, but I would certainly not want to have to count on that, but I have wanted to do a special skyline for a while and Thomas knows about that. I had originally thought about S30V and Maybe Tan G10 or perhaps Digicam. I am open on this idea, I would still need you guys to do most of the work in gathering ideas and that stuff, then I can check on pricing when we have some options in place.

Dave

I mean we could make the BF edition simply be the model number. 1760BF, we wouldn't have to go elaborate.

Colorwise, pretty sure that blue has been the one I have heard from most often on here. Blue for blade forums.

I think the BF model number would be best. Broadens the market, I'm betting a lot of member don't really want bladeforums etched across the blade. One of the sites that shall not be mentioned does exclusives without putting their name on it.

So do we want to start a materials thread without the costs? Or have Dave run a few to get an idea to get cost? What is the next step?

I think different colored G10 is going to be the only cost effective option.

I would like Dave to run the prices for the blade steels before we vote on them. I think the only ones that can be done for the lowest cost are going to be the ones that they offer in already in ~$100 knives. That would be S30v, 154CM and ELMAX.

Maybe we could run the poll for blade steels (minus s30v since that would likely be the cheapest and everyone already seems willing to accept it) and then have Dave price the top 2 or 3 along with S30v.

Then knowing the price of the the knife with each steel we can vote on the winner.

Wow!!!

The stonewash on that mockup looks GREAT! And I love the G10 color. If we could get something like that in 154cm at a minimum, preferably S30V or something even more exotic then I'm in 100%.

Before we get our hopes up I think we should realize the kind of commitment it would take for a dealer to do this. I have very little business experience (I'm an academic) but from my understanding what we have is a handful (few dozens) of interested buyers. Kershaw has a standard that this will be profitable if they get a payment for a run of 600 knives. That means a middleman (dealer) has to pay Kershaw upfront the price for production of those knives. Assuming say $75 to Kershaw for the knives that means fronting $45,000. Even with some committed orders that's a lot of money we're talking about and a lot of risk for a dealer. Since it's a limited run and a very popular knife to begin with I'm confident it would be profitable for a dealer as well, but an individual like Dave might not be in a position to do something like this.

I think the hope is the final selling price will be about $75 which means that Dave will only be paying <$50 for them.

Dave emailed me and said he's wanted to do something like this for a while now. While I can't speak for him directly, I think he's on board.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that having Dave on board is exactly what this project needs.

Just having this discussion about a new Skyline... I think I'm gonna go order the orange one which is now for sale online.

EDIT: Ordered. I already have the Damascus version. Now just to collect the regular and tan.

Just to add to the discussion here are the of existing skylines. I think a blue handled one would make a great addition and really stand out:

(I think the tan/satin one is missing (maybe?) taken from this post)

I'm really digging that blue g10! Give me that plus s30v or better blade steel and I'm happy as could be.

Here's a quick photoshop of Leek_Freak's mockup (at top) with the rest of the collection:

But we should really do some polls to see what everyone wants, although smurf blue seems to be the most popular choice so far.

I like the regular clip. The one with black clip just looks off to me; it distracts from the stonewashed blade.

I dunno. I don't like black clips plus orange, like the orange Spyderco Delica FFG, it gives it that weird halloween look. But with smurf blue it looks fine IMHO. Still I'd probably agree silver looks better, but they're pretty even, I could go either way.

I like the clip that matches the blade. Black looks much better with a black blade.
