Are the black box Winchesters with gold colored printing on them a different series from the black box/red printing ones ?
kj

Yes they are a different run and different patterns. The model numbers are a bit different with 5 digits and a "0" in the center if I'm not mistaken. I decided to collect the ones with the dark bone like the ones in the photos I posted. Made from 1987 to 1991 with 4 digit model numbers.
There is a picture of one of the boxes in the first part of this thread. There is also a nice collection posted a page or two back from here.

Seems like that series has a lot delrin type scales in it...just an observation from looking at 100's of ebay auctions.

Here are 2 examples of "Black Box" Winchesters with yellow (or pale lime green ?) printing on the box. Usually the "Black Box Winchesters" refers to those with red printing on the box.

The W15 2991, released in 1988 is a 3 5/8" Double End Jack, aka "Moose" with smooth yellow bone handles, made by Queen.

Here is 39118 BH, 1997, a stout 3 3/4" Serpentine Whittler with jigged bone and a Buffalo Head shield, (in the box 2991 Pearl, i.e. wrong box but it fits):

These are top quality knives certainly equal to the Black Box/Red Lettering knives.
Does anyone know what the "W 15" signifies ?

The second trapper in this particular series with a saber grind master blade and a spey blade with a dutch clip.

The knife oozes quality, but the shield is, hmmm, say special!
What about he barlows that sells today?

I have a black box, stag, bannana trapper, aka panama trapper, aka toadsticker. It is marked 1950, '89 on the tang and box, black with red lettering. Sweet knife, mint, excellent dramatic stag on the back, unusual stag ground some and propellar/bow tie pinned sheild on the front. Sorry, I cannot do pictures.

I know this is a thread for bone covered knives, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about the knife. Is it 1095 steel, it's real shiny :)? Is it made with the original tooling? Is the 1950 a date with meaning? Did it come with other cover material? Was the pattern repeated later on?

It's a great blade, big at 5 1/4 inches. I like big trappers and this is only my third stag knife; this may be the start of something new :)

Thanks

It came in black bone as well...great knife one of my favs and gets into my EDC on occasion! Blade is 1095 was made by Queen Cutlery, supposedly using old Winchester patterns, dies etc. I seem to remember it being done again in Rogers Bone for the Cartridge Series later on.

I posted "pattern number" because that is what is marked on the back side tang of the Black Box Winchesters. I was not aware that 1950 is not the correct number for this pattern. There were no Winchester reproductions in 1950 so it is not a year date.
