Bladeforums BEST BOWIE - 2008 Edition

You make a good point Nick (no pun intended). Perhaps we need to draw the line somewhere. I have always kind of looked at the "dogbones" as Bowies even if they had dagger style blades. But technically that's not correct.

Roger, did we allow Daggers last year?

Nick - they meet the very broad and inclusive criteria set out in the opening post. I suppose we could call this the "Best Big Fixed Blade" thread, but "Best Bowie" sounds better. :)

As for not having any knives to enter, I sincerely hope that we will see the completed version of this awesome piece in the 2009 Best Bowie thread. ;)

Thanks Roger, I know you stated at the beginning that "bowie" is definitely a V-E-R-Y broad spectrum into which a knife can fall into.

I didn't mean to question the rules, so much as the idea of what everybody here considers a bowie in regard to a dagger blade. I've seen MANY "spear point bowies" that looked like daggers with a dropped, asymmetrical handle ;)

So I was just curious!!!

:D

And no worries Roger, with any luck on the submissions end of things, that bowie and Coop's will be early entries in the 2009 race :)

Bowies are not daggers;):thumbup::thumbup:

I tend to agree, but the design criteria from last year and this year only covered fixed blade and blade length. I don't recall daggers being posted last year, but I don't see where the rules would exclude them and it probably wouldn't be fair to invent an exclusionary rule after nominations had otherwise validly been made.

And keep in mind - these are just nominations - you each get to have your say of what knives should make the finals and which knife should take the top spot.

Last year's winner was a fighter. ;)

Roger

Just looking through last year's thread and didn't notice any daggers.
I do remember the thread starting up a "what's the difference between a bowie and a fighter" discussion.

Nick - it was a very fair question. And you raise a good point about the blurred line between spear point and dagger.

Which reminds me that I sure wish we saw more spear point bowies as a general rule.

And now I'm just plain rambling. It's because my brain hurts from trying to figure what my top five will be from what we have already. And there are probably a few more to come.

Always a last minute entry.

I know DH III is well represented, but unless I missed it (this is a terrifically long and entertaining thread!), Don's first sub-hilt should be up for a vote, IMHO. :D

Yeah, proud as I am of that Dagger I did for Paul, it don't look too Bowie-ish even to me. Can I slip one in myself that looks a bit more so?

See what I mean? I go away for 20 min., come back and BAM! Two more awesome bowies posted.

Roger

Thanks for posting that, Joe. It's actually sub-hilt #2 but was made right after #1 :)

Dang, this is a thread full of fine lookin knives!!!

Roger, I agree that "Best Bowie" sounds better, and all for inclusiveness, but a dagger is a dagger, and a bowie can be a lot of things.

IF you want to remove ambiguity, then change the danged thread title!

Ain't no kumbaya here.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Well, I guess I'll throw one up too....:-)
