Just got the BRKT Boone II after waiting more than ten days. Unfortunately, it has a flawed Amboyna Burl handle. It appears that there is a bad spot in the wood someone tried to touch up or maybe even filled in. Those of you familiar with these knives know that these wood handles add quite a bit to the price. This should have never gotten past quality control. Otherwise, the blade looked perfect.

The dealer is going to send a new one out as soon as this one is returned. He apologized profusely, but it's not his fault.

It actually seems an attractive eye in that gorgeous burl to me.Nice touch of character. But,considering the price, you should get exactly what you want and expect.

If it were only an eye. It's a friggin' leg! Half the size of a pencil eraser might be considered an eye on a piece this size.

My ex was a manufacturers' rep for lines like Century and Thomasville. This kind of flaw might be OK inside or at the bottom and back, but not on such a small piece and so clearly visible.

It's OK, though. I'm sure the vendor will make it right. He wasn't happy hearing about it.

I agree that it looks like a natural handle to me. I wouldnt complain about it just like I wouldnt complain if I bought a marble countertop and it had some character.

It is a natural handle, all right, with a very large flaw in a very visible location.

I can see a bunch of marble counter top salesmen making a bee-line to you.

Agreed.

That is Common on Natural Burls.

You probably should order Micarta.

Maybe you guys should try to consider it from his perspective. I for one am with him, I think it should have been caught by QC and there is no excuse for an expensive knife not to be PERFECT unless you buy it knowing that. It may be natural, but it is up to the manufacturer to procure the best material and make the best product if that is what they charge for.

Mr Mc Mannis,

I agree that he should return it.

He needs to get micarta or a non burled wood.

That is not a flaw.

It is naturally occurring in woods of that Type.

Everyone should get what they want.

Jim

I love my barkies but.... If theres a dog turd stuck in there, thats natural too but its not really what I was hoping for. Mike will make it right though. Thats one reason why I love BRKT.

right, but its up to the manufacturer to find ways around that. look at the way that guitar makers use woods, if you have to cut around it or go through a lot so be it, thats why the price is higher.

If I wanted Micarta, I would have ordered Micarta. Quite frankly, it's not interesting to me in Micarta.

I've never had a problem like this with any other natural wood handled knife I've purchased, including one of similar Amboyna Burl. In fact, I've examined dozens of knives with burl and other natural wood handles and have never seen a flaw this large or this ugly, even on much larger pieces. Most imperfections are eyes about the size of half an eraser, or lines between color variations in the wood. And, even then, serious imperfections rarely show up on the display side of a knife. Some may add character to the piece; some do not. It's hard to believe any artisan would consider this imperfection a plus.

When you find something like this, you get another billet and start over. It seems clearly to me one that slipped through QC. Certainly, you don't see burls finishes like this on their site! I have no doubts that BRKT is capable of selling an Amboyna Burl handled Boone II without such noticeable flaws. So, another try at it!

At the risk of sounding like everyone else who says this, you should send it to me. I'll give it a good home and won't work it too hard.

Or, send it back to Mike and specify that you want a more uniform burl. Hopefully, he'll be able to make you one without having to remove the Amboynia more than once or twice. It's just tough to see what's on the inside of wood before you shape it.

Gee, I didn't know it was a custom order. Given the number of handle options offered by BRKT, you'd think it fairly simple to just replace a knife with a big flaw in the burl.
