"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

JohnDF JohnDF , What a bummer, John! Hope it all comes out in the wash!:D

Out filling my bird feeders earlier, the Turkeys show no shyness when I toss some seed on the snow. Like feeding pigeons in the park! I'm at least partially responsible for their plumpness!

Nice rafter of turkeys  We suddenly have them roosting in the trees behind our house... it's an awkward animal to watch 30 feet up in trees.

In looking through this feed, I don't think it's the same person. Not a knife amongst them.

I can't be 100% sure. Tweets about old houses farm stuff, wildlife, etc.

Thanks Jerry  There is this one of an early George Berley Barlow, one of Mick's most treasured knives: https://twitter.com/MikeCritchlow/status/827066162689236992

I really don't know what to make of it :( The lady I spoke to yesterday runs a shop in Sheffield city centre, which sells knives, cutlery, and books of local interest. I've known her for decades, and she referenced Mick by name, and seemed very well-informed. Hard to believe she'd get this wrong, but I really don't want to misinform people (been up most of the night worrying about it). I've emailed Mick before, with no response, and I know others have, but I'll try again, and pursue any other avenues I can (I think I have an address for his farm)

Big fly-past planned in Sheffield this morning to commemorate the Mi Amigo air crash during WW2 (https://www.bladeforums.com/threads...tales-vignettes.754492/page-178#post-11886436 - please note that I am quoting in that post, I can't edit that in because of the forum software changes), made the national news for the first time. Hopefully there'll be some video available later

(There's a certain amount of inaccuracy and journalistic license in current reporting, but it's a moving and fascinating story nonetheless.)

So what is the situation exactly? Has wellington/mick died? Who is this Twitter account with the name 'Mike C' ??? What is the connexion? The Twitter account seems extremely active and the style of writing is different from wellington/mick's:confused:

The Sheffield thread started in 2009 and wellington/mick alludes to having a grandfather alive I think. He certainly concentrated on the knives and spoke very little about his personal situation or goings on, very measured and also full of enthusiasm for knives.

Sad news about Mick.
Sheffield Museums. Inexplicably, they had no interest in it, and so instead John gave away the knives, mostly to a local charity shop apparently.
Sad news about the knives, too. The charity shop probably tossed them in a bin.
I suspect the Sheffield museums downplay cutlery because cutlery = knife violence. Better to falsify and erase history than to foster knife violence.

I'm very sorry for the confusion, I was told yesterday that Mick had died. I was trying to find a memorial notice to post when I came across the Twitter account. I've never known Mick use the name Mike, here on the British Blades forum, in emails, or away from the internet, but that doesn't mean anything. I know Mick had a farm out in Derbyshire, which kept him busy, I also seem to recall him being interested in old churches and brass-rubbings, but I came across that Twitter account because of the link to Sheffield knives, and a photo of one of Mick's knives was posted from that account. Mick has been away from the forum for some years, but Stan Shaw, with whom he used to have fairly regular contact, hasn't seen him or heard from him either. I've sent Mick another email, but I'm really not sure what is going on now. I hope I haven't misinformed people :(

Well it is perfectly natural to share concerns and losses with friends, mate. Let's hope it has been a mistake and he's still around.

[Moved from Lambsfoots for obvious reasons.]
I'll smoke pipes again when I win PCH.
There was a tobaccanist in Ann Arbor who could advise you on whether a given pipe suited your physiognomy and physique. I bought a lot of English seconds pipes from him because I usually walked through Nickel's Arcade to get to classes and back.
I like an English with plenty of Cavendish and no Perique, as far as tobacco goes. I must be allergic to something in the perique; it makes me sick immediately. Not puking sick, but dizzy and cottonmouth sick.
I tried to like Corniel and Diehl's 101/ Morley's Best, because it's supposed to be a recreation of Blue Boar, which was my great grandpa's favorite and perforce Grampa's and Dad's. It has an aroma like burnt yard waste. GG RJ may have thought an agreeable aroma was sissy stuff.

I got the tobacco jar in Lansing a dozen years ago or so.

I know that he was active on brittishblades.com. I understand that with its demise a lot of the former members now post on edgematters. You might ask there.
I hope all is well with him. Very knowledgeable and a most genteel poster besides.
