"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The English are masters of understatement. :p Cheers, mate.

Jack, are you sitting? Your email just arrived. (At the alternate email address. May as well stick to that one.)

......no it's not a math game, nor an exercise in progressive sequences......it's just my post count, here in the traditionalists' lair  and the number makes me think back. When I joined this community, my point of view about American traditionals was biased due to the lack of knowledge. I knew little, I liked little.
But time (not time in general, but rather time spent here on BF) and the constant inputs of all of you folks (with pictures, stories, reviews, insights, and so on) taught me so much about traditional pocketknives, and if I look back I can really see all the road I've walked.
I always knew I liked "old style" pocket knives, but before these 1234 posts, it was like a land where only a few trees could bloom (because they had always been there), while others stood asleep. Then it started raining, a rain of threads, posts, continuous help and support and knowledge...and other trees started to bloom.
Trappers, dogleg jacks, backsprings, harness jacks, jigged bone, yeller handles, vintage knives, custom knifemakers and knife related stories, and so on.
And my post count today reflects a tendency. The tendency to grow up, to learn more, and also to contribute more. It wouldn't have been like that, if this hadn't been the awesome place that we all know. I was lucky to find my way till this place, and I hope I'm smart enough to stay.
Thanks everyone!

Nice one, Fausto!

I'm glad you're here.

I have a birdfeeder outside of a second-floor window which squirrels are known to frequent despite various measures undertaken to deter them.

Today, a red-tailed hawk pulled a squirrel right off the side of the house next to the feeder. Would that I had seen it! My kids did, as did our neighbors (who immediately texted, DID YOU SEE THE HAWK JUST GRAB A SQUIRREL OFF YOUR HOUSE?!). I was able to get downstairs in time to see the hawk outside on the ground with the squirrel, but it had flown off with it by the time I retrieved my camera.

An exciting afternoon; a new squirrel deterrent. :)

Thanks for the well wishing for my wife, little one, and I (two or three pages back). Sorry for the late reply Holidays got the better of my time this weekend!

Argh! i've been so busy for a while its been hard to come on here and focus on the knives...seems like their has been some good news posted from peoples lives, you'd think with the holidays and time off i'd have more time but owning a house that was built in the 1800's and having old plumbing I had my hand forced on some things, plus a piece of my chimney I've had to repair or risk a house fire (one wall got pretty hot). :p

Now to try and catch up on some threads.

LOL Its in my knife box, since I moved here I dont have much of my tooling needed so tax return i'm buying my AR15 and a good combination belt sander to get modding...I also been scoping antique stores for busted up slip joints to tinker on, one guy has a box full, mostly rubbish but their are a few that look like candidates for my ides.

I mostly carry my 2011 BF knife, its soooooooooooo dang hard to put down for other knives LOL

I'm moving house after Xmas, and I've been supposed to be clearing out some stuff over the past few months. So far I haven't got very far at all! Well you've got to start somewhere, and I've just come across something I thought some of you beer and dog loving traditional knife fans might like (or not)! I've reserved one of these pins for Smokey, if Elliott wants it, but I've 3 more. Just PM me a mailing address if you'd like one :)

That's very kind of you!

However, if you're "clearing out" your possessions one tin pin at a time, you just might run out of time....

;)

Yeah, it's not going well P! Part of the problem is that while I'm always happy to give things away, I'm loathe to just throw them out. Now, does anyone want a couple of single beds in excellent condition and a couch (I'm not paying the postage though)?! :D

I should add that the pins aren't actually beat up, as they look in the pic, they're stainless steel and perspex-fronted with a clip at the back similiar to a tie-tack.

Jack,
if there's still place, I'll take your offer.
I'm not a dog lover myself...but I do appreciate the work of those two guys at Brewdog, and their products. The Trashy Blonde is probably my absolutely favourite beer
Either way, thanks again :)

Definitely Fausto. We had the brewers over from the Italian Brewfist and Toccalmatto breweries the other week. Like slipjoints, I don't think there's ever been a better time for craft beer. PM or email me your address and I'll get your pin off to you :)

Jack,
I have to admit, I discovered the wonderful world of craft beers only a couple years ago (a friend of mine opened a specialized beershop here, and introduced me to these wonders). Italian breweries are growing (in number and quality), and there are a couple of breweries even here in Sardinia that produce decent things to drink. Still, after an initial time of discovery, I learned that "British style" beers are definitely my cup of tea, and that's why I like Brewdog.
PM incoming. Thank you so much.

Yes, Brewdog have produced some very interesting beers. Like yourself, I'm partial to a Trashy Blonde! They produced a collaboration with Mikeller last year, 'I Hardcore You', which I think was the best beer I tasted all year. If you like those styles, look out for Magic Rock beers, also Marble produce some great ones. Not forgotting all those lovely American craft beers of course. We are spolit for choice these days :)

Jack,
thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to try the "I hardcore you", but I can't complain. I live in a place where people drink alot of beer but generally know nothing about craft beers, so I'm lucky enough :)
I will keep you updated on my discovery trip of British ales

Happy drinking Fausto.

I had some very nice Brewdog keyrings/bottle-openers a while ago. I'll see if I can get hold of one for you the next time I see their rep
