"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

If it's okay I would like to thank my porch friends.
This is 1 place that puts a smile on my face. As some of you might have read previously my Step Dad was the 1 that gave me my first pocket knife & how to sharpen a knife, he's been there most of my life. lots of memories.
A few weeks ago he had a bad flu so they thought after lots of tests. He had partially collapsed lung collapsed lung and tumour in the other, lung cancer. it's come on quick, as years ago he was ill & kidney function was effected, so regular testing. Just over a week a go the oncologist advised that to big to operate & risky. Due to his kidneys chemo therapy is a no go. So he starts radiation treatment next week to shrink it enough to improve breathing quality. Looking at him you wouldn't think anything was wrong, maybe just a cold. He's keeping his humour when I asked if he needed anything, reply yeah got a new lung. Mum is probably more tired, as she organises everything as Pop is like most blokes & avoids it, Mum knows what she is doing, retired nurse.
Last Friday was my daughter's birthday so we went out for dinner. Pop & I had a couple of quiet beers, everyone calls him Pop ever since the 1st grankid came along. Even Mum calls out Pop if I need to speak to him 😅
So fingers crossed he is able to potter around his garden & fix things for a bit longer.
Thanks to you all as I find the porch a comforting place😄
I've got no emoticon for that. It sounds like everybody is taking it as well as anybody could.

If this helps, my older brother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2011 at 51 years old, and it went to his brain. He has had numerous radiation treatments (albeit with chemo and monoclonal antibodies), and he's still around and kicking 12 years later. Prayerfully, your step dad will also get many years to come to enjoy your family and friends like my brother.

I should mention Pop is a metal guy worked in foundry for most of his life & ran the foundry floor till he retired. His favourite knife, a 12cm laguiole in ebony & 12c27 by laguiole de Artisan. I gave him probably 20 years ago & carried it every day till he retired.

Mitch, I wish your step-father will have the same guardian angel as my step-father. This guy drunk a bottle of whisky every two days and smoked two packs of cigarettes his whole life, had a heart attack and then survived to a lung cancer. Sometimes he makes me think that sin is not a bad thing .

Take care of your relatives and of you .

Happily no, but some (and a fair lot in fact) seem to consider GEC knives as an interesting and potentialy very rewarding financial investment.
Have a look on the bay and you will see what I mean. 😡

Seems to be that way, it's going on what 5 or 6 years now where every drop is quicker and quicker.

I've seen the prices on fleabay makes me think I should sell some of mine. There are no new anywhere that I can find including GEC's site.

You'll see a fixed blade pop up now and again and sit for a little bit but they've been selling out quickly for a long time now.

Best thoughts for Pop. It's a tough road but family can help smooth out the rough spots. Don't dwell on the negative. Highlight the positive.

How's everyone doing I think my few year sabbatical is over. I've been buying a few new knives lately but they've been modern folders which is a bit out of character for me. Anyway I'm hoping to start hanging around for awhile again. I see some old friends as well as some new folks. I will say that being away for a few years has been great for my wallet. 😆

Good to have you back, Randy!:thumbsup:

Sorry to hear this, Mitch. Best wishes for his treatment. I hope the doctors can give you and your family as much time with him as possible.

My kids refer to my dad (who they unfortunately never got to meet) as Pops.

Morning porch dwellers. I realized my most recent post was about getting covid, so I thought I'd post an update so nobody would think I dropped dead. It's been a little over a week and it seems we are through the worst of it. First 3 or so days of fever approaching 102 was the worst. Now it's down to just a lingering cough getting up some remaining lung congestion and nothing tastes good.

Back to work yesterday for me - working from home, so the full 10-day quarantine doesn't really apply to me. My wife is probably out the rest of the week since she has to be cleared by a doctor to return to work, and her appointment is tomorrow.

Definitely not a fun ride, though I have had cases of the flu that went on longer. Coffee this morning is not as horrible as yesterday so maybe the taste thing is resolving itself too.
