"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hey folks I have another I've been gone whats happened question. Before I left the forum there was much talked about concerning F&F for payment for knives on the exchange but it seems like there's a ton of knives listed that require payment by PayPal F&F. I guess that's the norm now which I won't do because with that you have no recourse and IMO in a sense stealinf from PP and that's just bad business especially when it's such a small percentage difference. I would rather pay the extra 3.5 or 4% and go with Goods & Services. Has this become the norm or Have I just come on to rare listings.
100% normal now, Paypal also will send any earnings over a certain amount to the IRS so that's why people are opting for F&F that and the scam artists of course.

Paypal has been a shady company for many years now and they're not getting any better and yet the alternatives aren't that great either so it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't kind of situation most of the time these days.

I think a lot of it is because of the new rules put in place that require PP to send the seller and the IRS a 1099 form if you have more than $600 in sales in a year. The previous amount, prior to the Inflation Reduction Act, was $20,000/year. If you don't have a receipt showing what you paid, you have to pay income tax on the whole amount, even if you're selling the knife at a loss. Apparently this doesn't apply to F&F, but does to G&S.

Thanks guys that makes sense I now understand the why for F&F only sales PayPal got greedy and shot thereselves in the foot. I'm going to get back in the swing of things around here but it looks like it's going to be a hot minute.
Thanks again for the answers guys here's a random knife shot to make it official.

It isn't that PP got greedy. They have to comply with the new federal reporting regulations.

PP is super anti-gun/knife though, they've closed accounts associated with selling those items.

I'd say it isn't necessarily greed but they definitely skew one way and it's not like they are pushing back on it.

All I'm saying is the shift to F&F has to do with new US tax law/regulations. Nothing to do with anything PP did. I express no opinion regarding this, or anything else having to do with PP.
Carry on.

I read that about PayPal a lot, but I've bought lots of knives on ebay using Paypal. Some knife retailers accept Paypal. The Paypal reciept says "knife" so it isn't like anyone's being sneaky about it. I'm not disputing anyone else's experience, but I haven't ever run into any issues.

Not to get too political as there's a forum for that. I'm more talking about personal transactions not necessarily from retailers as they have business accounts and all that jazz.

Directly from their terms of service

Prohibited Activities

You may not use the PayPal service for activities that:
(j) ammunition, firearms, or certain firearm parts or accessories, or (k) certain weapons or knives regulated under applicable law.

Now obviously you're supposed to obey your local knife laws and such but at anytime you say bought a knife that was illegal even if you had no intention of taking it outside or you didn't know, you could still have your account shut down.

It's happened to thousands of people who bought ammunition and I've heard quite a few people who sold a handful of knives having their accounts restricted or terminated as well.

Paypal has even shut down accounts offering Firearm Training and not firearms.........

Problem is, the alternatives to PP don't seem very appealling either :(

You could argue that their terms of service contain prohibitions about firearms...but those TOS are forever changing and HAS anybody other than a legal eagle read through them all, repeatedly ?

The limitation on transactions has reached the EU as well...they start quesioning you if you get transactions over 600€ in a year and threatening closure (I don't have an American bank) so F&F it has to be.

I was totally incensed by PP a couple of years back when I an EU citizen bought Cuban Rum from an EU based firm online using a European bank and paying in € received a threat to seize my account for buying 'prohibited items' , they did the same when I tried to buy Cuban cigars as a gift from a retailer in Spain for a friend. I could accept it, reluctantly, if it were a Dollar transaction paid via a US credit card for importation into the USA. But TOS.....o_O:poop:

They are gold fish, he's had it for close 30 years, they've bred a few times. Has lost a few over the years had to cover it with mesh more than once due to cats. That's no good for your dad, they ain't cheap.
1 tough looking Kookaburra, on the hills hoist? Looks old school.

Another 1 bites the dust. You all probably know I like hats..
Well Akubra is a 5 generation family owned business, it was sold last week 🥺
Don't know what direction it will take, the billionaire that bought it made his money on coal mining, that's no good anymore and gone green. Spends a lot of his time travelling the country and world telling people all about it. While travelling in solar powered jets of course 🙄😄
