"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That's a big move Carl, hope it works out for you and Karen.

Texas sounds like a good place though (you could even get a Texas Jack ;) )

Good luck with everything. Still umming and ahhing about moving myself, though if I do it won't be far.

Carl,
as you know, my roots are deep down inside my homeland, yet sometimes I wonder about moving as well (and pretty far from here, much more than from MD to TX). I know that you will miss your place, but, after all, I'm convinced that you bring your roots along wherever you go, and maybe in TX you will find something more.
The good news is, once you keep your resolza in your pocket (or your peanut, or any other pocket knife), a pipe, a 4way SD, and a P38, you will feel at ease everywhere.
So best wishes Carl. Keep us updated. :)

Carl, I am moving to PA. Won't be long before this BS makes it's way to PA though. Several friends and acquaintances that live in PA already call it northern MD. I drove past the MD state troopers headquarters barracks on the way to work this morning, in Pikesville. MD residents will have to go there to get these new "licenses" to own a firearm. From Deep Creek to Ocean City. The parking lot is so small, employees and troopers don't have that much room. Shooting themselves in the foot.

I love this state, I love the Chesapeake Bay and the mountains. I have lived here my entire life. I cannot abide this #^#$%&#&#&%! Yesterday's ruling helped no one. People are still holding out for the hope that this bill doesn't pass the senate. I'm looking at property in PA.

You'll like PA; it's in no way like MD as far as gun laws go. It's shall-issue, and there are at least 6 class III dealers within an hour's drive of me, for example. You can hunt with a suppressor; the only odd rule is, no hunting with a semiauto (old anti-poaching law, I guess).

Leaving home.
I'll miss Maryland crabs and seafood, but there's always the gulf shrimp.
Carl.

Carl,
We are moving back to TX in June...I can't wait. I grew up in California (San Diego) but it has gotten beyond ridiculous there. My wife (a Texas native) and I moved to Houston and were there for 4 years, then to San Antonio for 6, a brief 3 year interlude in Albuquerque (actually liked that a lot too), then back to SA for another 3.
We've been in Boston since Jan of 2012 and I can't wait to get back. This time we are moving to Corpus Christi which was the point of all my rambling...whenever you'd like to come get some gulf shrimp feel free to let me know and we can use your Opi or that sweet Sardinian knife to cut the heads off a few for the pot, or bar-b-que, or frying pan...you get the idea.

Chestertown, now there is a place I haven't heard mentioned in quite a while! Visited there quite a few times with a bridge superintendent named Charlie Smith with whom I worked on numerous jobs. He and his father had made quite a name for themselves building bridges in the Maryland/DC area. Small world isn't it?

I can sympathize with you for wanting to move Carl, but Texas? Man it is way too hot and way too flat for this mountaineer to consider moving to! Visited there and had a blast but not sure the Norse and highland Scots blood I inherited from my family would do too well in Texas. Decades from retiring but am saving and planning for my eventual return to the mountains of my youth.

Blaine, I live within a ten minute brisk walk from the Mason Dixon line. A friend just moved to PA from MD. Within a month, he had his concealed carry permit for PA. I spend a lot of time, and my $, in PA. I will gladly become a resident of Pennsyltucky!

I figure I can visit the Eastern Shore and the mountains for a week or weekend, and when I get fed up with the whole business down here, I can go back home! I was looking at a fixer upper right over the line in PA, it's looking even better all the time.

Oh, boy... Smoke in the air from Philadelphia. Your wife is lucky to have you, for emotional support during this difficult time.

Wish all turns for the best for you and your family.

Andi, I am still praying and thinking of your gal's grandpa. I hope you are allowed in to see him.

Thanks Alex, hepclass and Dan.

I hope I can see him during weekend once. Maybe on sunday we can go there, after telephoning before.

Carl, this is interessting news. I hope you have a great time in Texas. This might be a big step moving on such a long distance. I wish you and family just the best in the new home in Texas. :)

Leaving home.

After living almost my whole life in Maryland, I think I am leaving to migrate to Texas. The Maryland house has passed ur insane governors 28 page gun control act, and between that and the taxes, I do not believe I will die in this Peoples Republik that this state has become. Just rubs me the wrong way. Karen's youngest sister has already moved back to Texas to be reunited with her long lost love, and Karen's middle sister is retiring this year and she and her fella are moving to Georgetown Texas. I guess I'll be joining them.

Oh well, I always loved Texas when I was stationed there, and I met my greatest love of my life there, what the hell. I'll miss Maryland crabs and seafood, but there's always the gulf shrimp.

Carl.

It sucks but with the present climate some states are more favorable to our kind...i'm glad I live in KS, but in the next 4 years me and my wife want to move back to Alaska (I pick my states carefully as I conceal/open carry and hunt). If in your journeys you pass through north central KS be sure to hit me up. :)

Good Luck with the shift carl, I think it would be good for you taking on a new venture - its never too late for that - Good Luck Sir!

Andi, hes made it this far, so that's a good thing, PLEASE keep us informed, I had to get rushed back to Hospital yesterday, and I was most upset, as I have only been out of Hospital for a couple of days, but I managed to put things into perspective because of your post Sir, and I thought of your 80 year old friend, and sat back and considered my self just that little bit more lucky - please don't get me wrong, but unfortunately this is life, and if put into perspective at times, can be easier to deal with.
Looking forward to hearing good news soon Andi.

Sorry to hear about you having to go back in Duncan, hope you're OK now pal.

Hope you get to see the old chap at the weekend Andi, and that he's doing OK.

Jack

Hey Dunc, you take care of your self too amigo!

Andi - Hope you manage to get in and see your ladies Opa soon.

Take care y'all.

Prayers sent Andi!

Carl, Texas is a great place to be.

I saw a Lonesome Dove address the other day, I didn't know it was a real place in Texas!

Duncan, I am sorry to hear you are back in the hospital. Best of luck to you, I hate the hospital, you'd think I'd take better care of myself to avoid them! However, while you're in there, know that the nurses and doctors are doing their best to take care of you and your health is top priority, even over the urge to get the heck out of there.

Duncan, stop going to the hospital, and get about the business of being well. You have my hopes with you.

Andi, I'm still sending off good wished and requests to the big guy upstairs. Hope all goes well.

Carl.

LOL, I will try to take your advice Carl, I am back home, 3 steps back - one step forward, in saying that I made it to the corner of my block today, and it felt so good!! and that's what I want for Andis Wife's Granddad.
Carl, you must also keep us informed about your shift to the big "T", now that you have had time to process the though of shifting there-are you actually looking forward to it?
Take Care everyone!
ps. thanks Jack & scruff & ststudio, all is getting there my friends.

Yeah, Texas is hot, but I would love not to have to shovel snow for the rest of my life. I'm at a point in life where I can handle heat way better than cold, like most senior citizens, not to mention most of what Karen and I like to do, requires warm weather. Canoeing, fishing, sailing, a day at the beach, riding our Vespa's, did I mention fishing?:D

I was stationed twice at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, and loved it. I only returned to Maryland when I was discharged at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C., where I was sent for physical rehab after my construction accident. Since my family was there and I was in no shape to deal with supporting a wife and kid, with another on the way, my family turned into our helper as I got into a VA apprentice program as part of the rehab until I got back on my feet. Things just sort of worked out that way, but Karen always had a soft spot for her home state, and she has been a pretty good sport about living in Maryland. So... what the heck. Karen's youngest sister has already returned to Texas to be with her long lost high school sweetheart after her divorce, and Karen's middle sister is retiring this year and plans to go back.

I figure I met the great love of my life in Texas, got married in Texas, had our first child in Texas, so we may as well finish up in Texas, where I can enjoy my second amendment rights in peace. And I'm curious if I can find the exact spot on Padre Island where I asked Karen to marry me on our third outing, a camping trip to the beach. It was a half moonlit night and we were on top of dune, and I figured I better not let this one get away. She did say yes.:D

Sooo, we just may end up in Texas.

Carl.
