"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

So that’s a cartwheel.

Do you have examples of a mag (farthing), joey (three pence), tanner (six pence) bob (shilling), and quid (pound)?

You guys don’t seem to have as much fun with your money since decimalization.

Since decimilization in 1971, nobody has bothered to name any of the coins. I only ever buy coins to send to Gevonovich! :D But here's a pic of the pre-decimal coinage (the quid was a note and is now a coin).

Top row, left to right: Crown (Dollar), Half-Crown (Half-Dollar), Two Shilling piece (Florin, Two-Bob bit), Shilling (Bob), Sixpence (Tanner).

Bottom row, left to right: Threepenny piece (Thrup'ny bit) silver Threepenny piece (Joey), Penny, Half-Penny (Ha'p'ny), Farthing (Mag).

I forgot to ask about that coin you sent Jack, I like it. Thank you! I got some books over the wknd. The little one has a lot of great photos of European blades, mainly French.

Safari won't load pics on BF from my iPhone or iPod, but Tapatalk works fine.

That's a Victorian penny Dan :)

Good score on the books. I just missed a collector's guide to pocketknives at a car-boot sale :(

Supper...

Hi all, been a while since I've been active around these parts, mostly due to dealing with the loss of my beloved Weimaraner, Smoky.

Well, it turns out that Tina felt the empty nest weighing in on us and decided that we needed to add another personality to the household.

Strangely enough, on the day that I made my donation to the local fire rescue squad, a dog named "Smoke" was listed on a Weimaraner rescue site and located just 60 miles away.

Well, we went to visit this two year old, 90 lb. hellion the next day and wouldn't you know it?, he followed us back home. We've got two weeks to decide if he's a good fit for us.
(Barring unforeseen issues I doubt he'll be going anywhere.)

Anyway, here's a pic or two from the day we picked him up and making himself at home...

I sure hope Smoky would approve and I just thought the dog lovers amongst you would appreciate a small glimpse...though Lord knows what I've let myself in for...

I am very happy for you Elliot. My old Labrador Beau is not long for this world and I'm contemplating having him put down. Very tough thing to think about, especially when he just walks over with his horrible arthritis and puts his head in my lap. I don't know how I could cope if I didn't have my younger two labs there. I am glad you guys are getting another buddy. He won't take your pups place but he wil fill the void left behind.

Thanks, Dan. I'll be thinking good thoughts for your "Beau".

:).

(Nuff said between brothers.)

Otherwise looks like he is starting to fit in quite well.

Congrats on the new pup, Elliott. I hope he fulfills what has been missing, at least in part.

Looks like a pretty good fit to me, Elliott.

Smoke up for it all to work out.

:thumbup:Beautiful dog, Elliott. I'm sure Smoky approves.

I've heard that Weimaraner's are very intelligent dogs. I may be a Corgi lover, but the gray ghost's have always interested me. I don't know what I'd do when the time comes our Pearl The Wonder Corgi leaves us, but I may try a ghost. They sure have a ton of personality.

Carl.

It's nice to see you around, Elliott. I know your new best bud will never replace Smoky, but he looks like he'll be real good company. My best to you and yours.

Thank you guys, your words mean a great deal.

Carl, if you decide to try one on, keep your running shoes handy. They're a handful. (But worth it.)

This one is a real "velcro" dog.

Good stuff, Elliott. Between the similar names and the timing, there must be some greater force at work. Even though he'll never be able to replace Smoky, it looks as though he'll be a good companion in his own way.

Good to see you posting here Elliott, and great to see the pics. Hope everything works out my friend :)

Jack

Elliott,
that dog looks like he has no intention to reveal any "unforeseen issues" anytime soon :D
Glad to have you back, and with a new friend. He will be into knives sooner than you think :p

Thank you, guys, for the kind words.

Funny, like Smoky when we first took him home, Smoke hadn't barked once during the first few days. He really caught me by surprise this morning when he let out a very deep, chesty bark earlier when he saw one of the neighbor dogs being walked down the road past our home. I thought Smoky's bark was attention getting but this was eye opening.

Be interesting to see how he interacts with the other neighborhood mutts when we encounter them. Thus far they've been scarce the past few days.
