Neat Citroen, and a beautiful Norton too!

I have something which we might call its Japanese successor, a Kawasaki W650.

It's 39°c today, I need a haircut.

Those 2CVs are quite thin on the ground around here, but I know a couple of guys (one a retired art professor, natch) who drive them. Once in a great while I might see a DS or ID model around. Great road cars.

I forgot to take both phone and camera but I spent the evening in the Minch (bit of sea between mainland Scotland and The Hebrides) with a couple of mates doing a bit of fishing. Having a blether and a few beers out on the millpond calm sea. Until some eejit in a go-fast boat decided to spoil the surface of course. My mate had bought an old wreck and had just finished making it seaworthy so we had to give it a proper test. It did him proud. Caught a few boxes of mackerel, some coalies, some pollock, a ling and an octopus that went back in. Good times.

Unfortunately my wife - who is expecting our second child - cannot abide the smell of fish just now so my buddies took my share of the catch.

I also remembered how completely awesome Opinels are. I took my de-collared no6 carbon for the normal little fiddly line cutting and lure trimming type stuff and a large slim stainless for the filleting. Honestly, I can't think of a more value for money knife than an opinel. I don't think I have any knife - including my excellent santuko's in the kitchen - that I can get as sharp as my opinels, and what's more I have completely no 'precious' issues with them. If they get lost or bust they can be replaced without any issue whatsoever.

:)

I have a question for you folks as some of you know there is a "Pay It Forward" thread that's been going on for a while in General Knife Discussion. The concept is that someone puts a knife up for grabs someone claims it and then they put up a knife for someone else to claim. If the person claiming the knife does not have anything to pay it forward with so be it. I have participated in that thread claimed a great big folder (Spyderco Tenacious) and paid it forward with a great big folder (Ontario Rat-1) and really enjoyed the experience. It's a great way for folks to try a knife that perhaps they wouldn't otherwise be able to or for someone that may be a bit financially challenged to have a chance to own a nice knife. Anyway what do you guy's and gal's think about starting something like this here on the porch. I don't want to steel anyone's thunder in General Knife Discussion but as many of you know I like to gift knives and know a lot of you do too so I thought it might be fun.

that was my inspiration to give that a try here, but sometimes im wary of folks who pop up on those and go free knives! im in. the goal is to give em away tho, but i do hope my pay it forward works out. i do wonder if i make my giveaways are too restrictive some times. i see whos on the porch all the time, i know the usual suspects ;)

I'll talk to Gary about it, but my preference would be for a pay-it-forward or pass-around to be done in the pass-around forum.

No big deal Frank I was basically just "thinking out loud" I already gift a lot of knives and have received a lot of gifted knives here privately as well as host the occasional GAW. As a matter of fact I've got the Opinel Collector Set GAW going on right now. So as far as myself is concerned no need to take things any farther you and Gary have enough to do already I was just "jacking my jaw" as we say in my "neck of the woods". :D

So today my brother, sister-in-law and niece boarded a plane for their move to Bath, England. Although we already lived several states apart, the fact that they will be living that far away, in another country, across an ocean, still seems strange. I'm excited for them, and can't wait to go visit, but we'll definitely miss them. Especially this one. :D

Barrett, I know what you feel. She will miss her GrandPa too! Just wait until she discovers the telephone magic! :D

Nice pix JP! 39c eh that's bad.....Good to see your bike has the old type number-plates too.

Can't be too many 2CVs left that aren't restored ones I suppose? I remember the first time I drove one, that distinctive air-cooled engine noise (nothing to boil over or freeze up though) wondering why it really didn't move much but at the same time rolling around like a boat in a storm (not for the car sick:barf::D ) flap open windows, roof open so who needs AC? Driving down some very rough rutted woodland tracks with no problem, yet weirdly comfortable! A great car, much preferable than a VW beetle. Then driving the 'copine's' old R-16 felt like a Rolls Royce in comparison (yeah, driven them too!):D

Thanks, Will

This one is a late one with rectangular lights and 6 lights. 650cc under the bonnet. A rich man's car :D :D An Opi on wheels. You can cross quite any ground and drive it full speed () whatever the road.

Weren't they designed to go across a ploughed field with 2 passengers and a quantity of potatoes?! They were very popular with social-workers here in the early 1980's :D

Sweet pic Barrett, looks like you now have another excuse to visit ;)

Originally I had my n° plate painted by hand, but this one was offered by the local spare parts dealer, who faced a police station and was fed up of the policemen's visits for my plates were not regular! :D
There are a good few working around, mostly pickups and commercials but it is fashionable now and prices have risen. There's also a 2cv cross challenge that destroys a lot of cars.

The design was an umbrella on four wheels to take 4/5 persons with 50kg of luggages and a basket of eggs at 50kmh across any road or field. :D

There was also a 4x4 (Sahara) produced (one engine under the bonnet + one in the boot) but the best IMHO is this one being able to start any direction (hopefully not in the same time!)

That's funny in an ironic way. The same thing has happened here with the old VW bugs from the '60's. Now theres outfits that restore them for a pretty penny. One firm in Fullerton California strips them down to bare chassis and puts in new everything. But they charge more for a 100% restored bug than a brand new "new" beetle at a dealership. And people pay it!

Looks impressive.
But, I'm not certain what I'm seeing. I'm not certain that I am tracking with the transformation from green to metal. A description would help the uninitiated and steady the unsure.

you got it! thats exactly what happened, i was doing a photolapse tutorial on how to make an oval signet ring. Each picture represents a step i took in make it, minus the casting of course. i dont have that equipment as much as id love to

Jack I'm with Frank what material is the green and tell us about the transformation and or relationship between the green and the metal materials. Also what are you going to do with the (what appears to be a) diamond in the 14th picture However the finished product looks great and you my friend are a very talented man.

It appears to be the process of lost wax casting.

JB in SC has hit the nail on the head! it is lost wax casting. that wax is jewelers wax Randy. it is very easy to shape and carve and when I was all done it, was sent to the caster. It was then cast in sterling silver. that little bit there is the sprue where it was connected to the wax tree. they do all of these things on a mass production wax tree that makes a whole bunch of various other projects. Thanks! i work on stuff now and then, gotta month off soon so cant wait!

Very skilled work Mr.K. Interesting WIP :thumbup:

I fancy a new signet ring too.....:D 18c Rosegold please:cool:
