JB in SC has hit the nail on the head! it is lost wax casting. that wax is jewelers wax Randy. it is very easy to shape and carve and when I was all done it, was sent to the caster. It was then cast in sterling silver. that little bit there is the sprue where it was connected to the wax tree. they do all of these things on a mass production wax tree that makes a whole bunch of various other projects. Thanks! i work on stuff now and then, gotta month off soon so cant wait!

Thanks for the explanation Jack I know less than nothing about casting anything.

Thanks for the explanation Jack I know less than nothing about casting anything let alone jewelry. The last time I went to a Jewelry Store with my wife was to replace her original wedding rings on our 30th anniversary and it cost me nine grand  so I try to stay away from those places far away.

$9,000.00:eek:
Did you buy the actual store?

I had our wedding rings made -they were made of Australian gold with a kind of Celtic design carved on to the surface.
That was 17 years ago. Janettes is still going strong but mine fell off in the surf and is now at the bottom of the sea somewhere.
How does something like that happen?
15 years ago during the approach to the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes I was entertaining a range of very serious symptoms for around 3 months. In the last month before SWMBO commanded me to see the Doctor I lost 9kg -in 1 month- I'm not a big guy to begin with so people who I had not seen for a couple weeks were shocked at my gaunt appearance. The ring which was always tight just fell off when it became loose.

yikes! we are in the industry so stuff is much cheaper to us. well we have to put in the work for it

Here in Europe, the 2CV is not just a car. It is, among few other models, a closet filled with weird memories. There aren't many of them around nowadays...but their emotional effect hasn't changed.
I had a close friend at school (late 80's - early 90's). Her mother had a light blue 2CV. The car was very well kept...yet she drove it with less care than a group of kids handling a football. I clearly remember the car inclined to the point of almost turning upside down and the wheels screaming as she took the turn close to our school. The wheels sounded like they were crying. They sure had reasons to cry though
As for jewellery, it's an art I always appreciated :)
Cheers from the right side of the Caribbean Sea ;)

Edited my post inappropriate to say the least should have never mention amounts of money I am sorry. I guess I had a senior moment.

Thanks for the explanations, fellas.
Very cool, MK!

That signet ring is pretty cool. I didn't realize it you could do it like that.

I also try and stay away from the jewelry store. I wear an inexpensive titanium band as it is cheap to replace. My first one is at the bottom of Lake Murray in SC.

Right, I was watching some youtube videos about the companies that make signet rings and they have this massive press that cranks out signet blanks but they become a soldered ring, there is a seam where they join the two ends together. I didnt want that, i have made several seamed rings and some how they always show up later on when worn on a necklace. the casting process creates a softer ring, but no seam.

Do Groundhogs like apples?

It appears this one does. Under the apple tree this morning.

Great picture Gary. We have a lot of groundhogs around here and other animals also but my wife always throws leftovers off of the deck and they never last very long. I have saw groundhogs eating about everything but they seem partial to biscuits.

We have a family member that has worked in the jewelry industry for about forty years or so. He uses die struck rings for his traditonal ladies patterns (forging does increase the strength of the smaller rings) and lost wax for his unique designs.

Oh yeah. They tear up apple orchards in the northwest corner of the state, but that's easily remedied.
Around here they're left for the wildlife, at least on my property. Beats me having to gather them up.

you got it! thats exactly what happened, i was doing a photolapse tutorial on how to make an oval signet ring. Each picture represents a step i took in make it, minus the casting of course. i dont have that equipment as much as id love to

That ring looks perfect! You did a great job working the wax and silver. Thanks for the tutorial--very interesting. I cast a mallard wall hanging from aluminum in Jr. High metal shop. It takes so much skill and ability to make something that's even mediocre looking--but your ring is stunning! Will you engrave anything in the signet?

My son-in-law Chris had a stroke this morning and is in the hospital. They said it is not life threatening however he has had some damage to his right side but they won't know to what extent for a while. He is only 41 that and to me that seems very young for something like this to happen I guess you never know what a new day will bring. I was getting ready to leave town for a few day's and just glad that I had not left yet as I am watching their two girls 10 and 7. He smokes a lot and I don't I know if that caused it but if any of you do smoke please at least consider quitting it's just not worth the risk. (Papaw advice coming out)
