"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Do you have a spreadsheet or a database to keep track of your knives Barrett ?? I have been thinking about getting a database to use , but I sometime procrastinate.

Harry

Harry, it's just an Excel spreadsheet. I don't have much experience with databases (and don't know of a good database program for Mac). I set up a tab for each brand/maker, then each knife gets two columns headed with a name/description for the knife (for example, "Tidioute #15 Boy's Knife/Crown Lifter, Ebony") and including the following data fields: Date Purchased, Purchased From, Purchase Price, Pattern #, Closed Length, Handle Material, Blade Steel, Year Produced, Notes and Images. Two photos for each knife (one with the blades closed, one with them open), formatted to fit the columns. I'll add a couple fields for any knife that I've sold or given away so that I have those details noted. Then I have an index tab with all the knives listed and linked to their entry on the brand/maker tabs.

It's not a perfect system, but it's what I came up with and it works well enough. I'm sure there's probably some database software out there designed for collectors that would be perfect for this, but that would probably cost money, and this was free. :D

Thanks for the update, Randy. I'm glad to hear she's on the mend.

Just got in from the hospital and my wife's surgery went well. She will be in the intensive care unit tonight but hopefully go to a step down unit tomorrow. I would like to say thank you for your well wishes and support. I'll be going back to the hospital early tomorrow morning so I think I'll call it a day now.

Thanks for the update, Randy. Continued prayers for her recovery and for your rest, my friend.

That's great news, Randy!!
Thanks for taking the time to stop in here to report on answered prayers for the surgery.
I'll continue to keep you and yours in my prayers; take care of yourself, as well as your wife!

Thanks for the reply Barrett . From what I could see on your computer screen , it looked pretty good and like a database . Whatever works for you. I have used both a lot in a past life , but now I would have to buy either one.

Great news. Don't forget to take care of yourself, as well.

Thanks for the update Randy. Still praying here anyways. And listen to r8shell's advice. Take care of yourself too.

Thanks for sharing the good news Randy, hope your wife continues to make good progress, and that you have been able to get some rest.

I've seen a few mentions of it in a couple different threads, thought I'd post this here. Seems like photos hosted on Photobucket aren't showing up because of some scheduled maintenance.

(It took me longer than expected to post this when I realized I couldn't host the screenshots about the maintenance on Photobucket.)

Thanks for the informative and confirmatory post, Barrett.
I was frustrated checking BF at breakfast today because there were little blue ? squares in place of many photos.

The P-Bucket seems to be in an almost constant mess these past few weeks, ALWAYS down for maintenance issues, to no end it seems.

Every time I delete 6 or so photos from my bucket, it still mysteriously remains as full as ever...and they keep badgering me to update my status and PAY them. I see little point. Will have to investigate alternatives. Pity as when (IF) it works, P.Bucket is easy to use....

I upgraded my Photobucket account a few months back. I'm now spared the constant pop-ups, but apart from that, I get the same derisory service as before :grumpy: I've tried a few other similar services, but haven't got on with them. I used to use Imageshack years ago, but after they ceased to be free, they reneged on their promise to continue to host already uploaded pics. I'm glad I don't have to rely on any of these services for business

shame, I got some mail calls i wanted to share. some one seems to have used imgur the other time? but idk how, still [IMG?

Same here Jack. I have recently been using imgur.com and so far I have had no issues.

That's good Bob, I have an imgur account I think

Edit - I'm getting an error message with THAT now!

I use Imgur as well as Photobucket. If you upload to Imgur copy the BBC Code (message boards and forums) link and paste in your post. Works well for me.

I'd welcome some advice please.

Seem to have had bad luck with a particular knife, a Walnut Bone Small Stockman from CASE. It's a new release and I got it from the Bay from a source I've always had excellent service from. When it arrived, the blade-play on all blades was really bad, plenty of gaps too. So, I returned it and the dealer was most helpful, promised he sent me an inspected one etc. He then sent it from Knoxville on 14th Oct, the tracking states it's STILL being processed at Customs in Chicago from 21 Oct. I contacted him again, he was apologetic and said the PO told him that Customs can hold up stuff. But, this is 14 days now in Chicago, is this usual does anybody know? Disappointed as I really liked this small knife-but it seems the Fates are agin it!

Thanks, Will
