"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hey guys, just letting you know, I'm installing a new computer this weekend, so if you don't hear from me for a while, it's because I'm really not good at this whole hooking up the computer thing. :D So many wires & cables back there...

Good bye, good old XP :(

Good luck r8shell

when you first turn it on, make sure it's not plugged into a network, your wireless router is turned off, etc...
otherwise it will try 7 ways from Sunday to get you to create a windows account that ties it to all the MS based social media.
once you have it up and running, go into the settings folder and turn off all the automatic sharing/notifications stuff you can.
then turn on your internet and watch it update and reboot for an hour and a half.

"Wires and cables?" Just hit the button, watch the Apple light up, and you're good to go. :)

Oh, wait....

:p

Thanks, I think I understand. I don't want all my personal documents floating around on the cloud.
Maybe I'm just old and set in my ways, but it seems like half the ads on TV are telling me to do my banking, insurance claims, etc. on my cell phone, and half the news stories are about fraud, identity theft, and hacking.

I just had an unknown charge appear on my relatively new and carefully used credit card, prompting me to cancel and reissue all my cards. With no idea how or where the breach actually occurred, I'm battening all hatches (again).

And my, how the landscape has changed since this last happened to me, a bunch of years ago now. Fraud is evidently much more rampant on both sides of the charging, and banks more swamped and suspicious-- they strongly suggested that I had simply forgotten a Christmas purchase and/or didn't recognize a vendor's account. Just, not the responsiveness I'm used to with a charge I caught while still pending and immediately flagged as fraudulent.

Showing up at a bank branch in person and having someone there call in helped expedite things. Better yet(?!), when a teller checked on the progress of my replacement card, she noted that it had already been activated-- even though I hadn't received the physical card yet. So they cancelled that card, and reissued the reissue.

Not confidence-inspiring. :(

Exactly the reason I won't deal with a bank that doesn't have a local, brick & mortar branch. When things get really messed up and complicated, I go in person and dump the paperwork on someone's desk. They can't put me on hold and shuffle me off to another department quite so easily. ;)

That kind of reminds me of Harvey Keitel advising Tim Roth on bank etiquette in Reservoir Dogs r8shell! :D ;)

Ah, nothing like a puppy getting his first encounter with snow. We only had a light dusting this morning, but Barlow seems to be enjoying it.

I haven't seen that movie, but I'll look up the clip.

Another obscure cultural reference falls flat! :o :( It happens to me a lot these days! :D

This version has been mildly censored (in bold):

Mr. Orange: What happens if the manager won't give you the diamonds?
Mr. White: When you're dealing with a store like this, they're insured a lot. They're not supposed to give you any resistance whatsoever. If you get a customer, or an employee, who thinks he's Charles Bronson, take the butt of your gun and hit him. Everybody jumps. He falls down screaming, blood squirts out of his nose, nobody says anything after that. You might get some lady talk out of turn to you, but give her a look like you're gonna be unkind to her next, watch her remain quiet. Now if it's a manager, that's a different story. Managers know better than to mess around, so if you get one that's giving you static, he probably thinks he's a real cowboy, so you gotta break that son of a gun in two. If you wanna know something and he won't tell you, ...[contains knife content]... of his fingers. The little one. Then tell him his thumb's next. After that he'll tell you whatever you ask. I'm hungry. Let's get a taco.

;) :D

Contact cement is what they call it here. Use it sparingly. Shoe repairers use it. It remains flexible when cured. Have fun!!

currently I use DAP brand contact cement.
it comes with a brush in the bottle - coat both pieces of leather, wait a few minutes until it's no longer wet but still tacky to the touch, then press the sides together firmly. (if you have a heavy rubber mallet, you can use that to "hammer" the edge to make sure you have a good seal.)
prior to gluing, only punch holes in one piece of leather - after gluing, use those holes as a guide to punch through the second layer. otherwise, you'll never get the holes to line up properly.

Wood glue or Elmers glue. Water salable and cleans up easy and won't effect your dyes.

Thanks fellas, never done it before but thought I'd dabble just for the craic [emoji4]

I'm continually impressed by the diversity of knowledge held and shared here. Just listing a few off the top of my head, I've learned about: leather boot care, getting rid of squirrels, cooking squirrels, leathercraft, and giant darner dragonflies. And there's a lot more, I'm sure. I think it's great that folks ask about all these things and that there are people able and ready to answer.

the tail fur on a squirrel is popular with those who tie their own fishing flies.

Randy - Respect Bro lol...... great group shot my friend- Awesome stuff!

So far so good Jack however I think it's going to be a bit of a learning curve with windows 10.

We are experiencing our first snow of the year got about 4 inches and it's still coming down. This afternoon my wife asked me to get a few "just in case" supplies a bit before the snow started however we had everything we needed but to be accommodating I went out. Now snow being an outdoor event I thought my friends little outdoorsman store would be a perfect place to go. Turns out it was knowing I might have to cut my way through the advancing snow storm I found this Schrade Scrimshaw Trapper from the 80's for $20. I'm glad she sent me out now I'm ready to cut my way through a snow drift. :D
