"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I must have already put a label with my name in a lot of my pants but not my address for some reason that escapes me at the moment.. It does however bring me to ask why all of you call me Randy my name is Levi Strauss.

Levi: Just topped Bob for the best yet IMHO. [emoji3]

I'm with r8shell, I don't follow a lot of sports, but do enjoy things like the Super Bowl and Olympics for their ceremony and spectacle. It does seem like they are losing some of their cultural relevance, though.

You know you are getting older when they speak of a "procedure", and you come home with one less body part. After the "procedure", it now feels like a mule kicked me in the gut. Worst part was that my Condor Kephart arrived for pickup at the local wallyworld yesterday, and I couldn't pick it up. Later today I'll fetch it and bring it home.

leghog: I have yet to lose a body part, but I have had a couple metal pieces "added". I know what you felt like. Hope things are improving.

Did anyone see the segment on Handcrafted America last night on Tony Bose??? I rather enjoyed it.

I hope it comes back on. I left myself two reminders to DVR it and still forgot:grumpy: Seems appropriate for the general topic of this thread lately:confused:

gridiron will be the winner on the day.

I'm off to watch it at Shellharbour Workers Club (its massive)with a couple of mates and have a catch up-bit a lunch and a couple of coffees. any luck a swim in the morning.maybe a "board meeting" in the afternoon.
I doubt I'll actually watch much of it and even if I did I have no idea what they are meant to be doing.

Let me treat you to one of the stupidest pieces of football commentary I've ever heard-this from Rugby league -
" the team that passes the ball around the most and scores the most points will be the team that wins the match!"
Oh, Really?
and said with the utmost seriousness and gravity as if it actually meant something or was an astounding breakthrough of knowledge.

Meako: That comment got everybody going on sports "color" commentators. It is like the old Firesign Theater bit "The department of redundancy department"

Meako, for many years we had John Madden commentating a lot of our games. While I enjoyed listening to him sometimes, we used to call him "Captain Obvious" for his similar genius witticisms. :D

Bob: I was in the same place about Madden. I loved his straight talk but he was so obvious it became a joke after while.

The sports announcer's job is to talk throughout the entire game, even when there's nothing to say. Must be a holdover from radio: you don't ever want "dead air." hence the brilliant :rolleyes:color commentary. I remember listening to Madden during one game when he kept saying "QB put a lot of mustard on that ball!" and "He's a steak & potatoes player." and "The defence just got roasted like turkeys." One of my friends said "Madden must have skipped lunch and now he's really hungry!" After that, we couldn't stop noticing and laughing at all the food related language. :D

I know a lot of folks are cynical about it, but I like to watch the Super Bowl. The game, the half-time show, the commercials. I know it's a ridiculous over-hyped spectacle, but it's a spectacle that friends and coworkers will all watch and talk about on Monday if something really crazy happens. (I love watching the Olympics, too)

r8shell: I have definitely mellowed over the years. I used to stay up on college ball and pro football, but don't any longer. I think it has a lot to do with going to work every day and needing to be able to hold a conversation? Since I've retired the first time and started my own business, I completely lost interest. Going to a Super Bowl party tonight, just to hang with friends. I really don't care at all.

Funny how we change as we get older I used to be a die hard sports fan of anything that had competition involved. It was a toss up between pro football and college basketball as to what was my favorite but I would watch anything that was on yes even bowling. Man I knew the players, coaches, owners stats everything. Bought and read the magazines wore the jersey's and hats. If it had to do with sports I was in. It seems to have started when the boy's were grown and gone but I have pretty much lost all interest in sports. I did not even realize who was playing in the super bowl this year until the last few days. I don't know what causes a person to change so drastically in their interest over the years but I sure have.

Randy: you are definitely not alone in this. See my comment to r8shell above. I am not certain what happens, but I really could care less these days. Some of it I think has to do with sports becoming such a hyped up marketing machine. I mean now we have a whole tv channel of just guys "talking about" football all day long. Boggles the mind.

I have better things to do, like hanging out here talking knives with newfound friends:D

I know what you guys talking about. I never was a huge sports fan but I always kept up with motogp, NASCAR and IRL. Today, I couldn't even begin to tell you who's driving (or riding) anymore. I guess spending that time with my family took over and replaced it. I don't regret that for sure.

The interest in sports has definitely waned for me. Die hard fan at one time, summertime the radio always had a game on as well. Still a big fan but not of all the sports I followed in the past.

It's still a bond for me and my son's and I treasure that. We are HUGE Patriot fans and Die Hard IRISH fans;)

So a fan still? Yep, but just not to the extent I was at one time.

I started for 4 yrs in high school in 3 different sports and made in to state in track. I really enjoyed playing and have an appreciation for the games. However, Ive never been a fan of watching it. I can do it, and don't mind it if others are watching it, but they just bore me as a spectator. My mom on the other hand has been a life long Cubs fan and became a Titans fan when they moved to TN.

I watch the world series and super bowl to carry on conversations with those who watch it at church.

Now if you were to invite me to a conversation on theology, philosophy, sociology, quantum physics, or politics with the game on in the background, I'll bring the chips and salse :D

Ya all have had me cracking up with this thread ... "Levi Strauss, athletic supporters and Geritol":D

Brett my man, I knew there was something about you. I played baseball thru High School yet never became a fan. I worked at 2 Nascar races a year for 6-7 years but don't know who won. Yesterday I googled "Super Bowl" to find out when it was scheduled and was surprised it was today. But I'd love to sit in on one of your conversations and share the chips and salsa with you. Well I'm off to the pre-game show... Naaaaaa ;) Hope it's a good game for all you fans!!!

All my guys are watching it while I cook them dinner as a "thanks for working for me" gesture. I've no idea what the score is loo

Just finished watching the classic film, "Captains Courageous". A favorite.

Now "Casablanca" is coming on.

Good on ya, SVTFreak. What is pastalaya, BTW? Jambalaya with pasta in place of rice? Would love to see a photo of the spread if you're so inclined.

That's exactly right. It's a bit easier especially when making 15 lbs of food plus the water needed (filled a 12 qt pot). The water doesn't have to be perfect and if it's too much, you just boil it off and if not enough you can add some while noodles cooking. I cook it almost strictly by feel and don't measure anything lol. I do measure rice and water for jamabalaya. Pasta uses the same water per pound as rice (I think it's a quart and a half per pound or noodles or rice).

This is what came out. Sorry I just finished cleaning up so the leftovers in a ziplock. But you get the idea.

Oh, I do add a dash of worchestershire and a can of rotel to pastalaya that I don't typically put in jamabalaya. I find it helps the noodles not be kinda tasteless.

As a Saints fan: thank you New England!

Joey, your pastalaya is looking good, man. As a fan of the seemingly non-existent red jambalya, I tend to chose pastalaya over brown jambalaya.

You must be from New Orleans, huh. That ain't jambalaya. That's sauce piquant. Lol. Seriously, creole jamabalaya (with the red sauce) is good and has its place, and there are times I want that and brown one won't hit that spot. But I have to admit that I like brown.

Thanks for the picture and description SVTFreak. Looks tasty!

No problem, dude. And yeah it came out pretty good lol.

How bout them Patriots? what an interesting game! friend offered a $50 bet on the falcons winning during the third quarter. i shouldve taken it and went with my gut. Never bet against Tom Brady and the patriots. (disclaimer, not actually a Patriots fan, just aware of the greatness that is associated. the home team is the giants, with Eli being Tom's kryptonite. Fan of the sport is all)
