"You can't go home again."
Apparently, I cannot.

I had occasion to go to the San Fernando Valley, north of Los Angeles today. On the way I thought I'd drive by the house in which I grew up. What I found was not a total shock, because I had used Google street view and knew what I would find. But somehow it hits home more when you drive by the address and see that the original house built in 1935 had been razed and replaced by two other houses. And rather gauche, ugly ones at that, IMO. Bummer.

Frank I feel your pain I grew up on a 30 acre tract of family land that not only our house but my Grandparents house, my Great Grandfathers house and my aunt and uncles houses set on, 4 houses in total. They have been gone since the early 90's. A developer bought up our land and some surrounding land and now there is a large single family home housing development and a ball field on the land. Folk have developed all over the rural areas of WNC to a point I don't feel you can even consider a lot of it rural anymore.

As an after thought why is an almost 64 year old retired guy up before 7:00 am on a Sunday on a laptop drinking coffee and have been up for two hours.

Maybe the same reason an older guy than that is up on a lap top drinking coffee after being up since before 6AM?
:D

Carl my friend we need help. :D
Randy & Carl, maybe some of us are just "morning people" enjoying the best part of the day!:p

Randy's and Frank's laments about "losing" where they grew up resonates with me. I grew up on a dairy farm, and after our daughter was born I was looking forward to eventually showing her some of my favorite spots in the barns and buildings and fields and woods. But when my daughter was a month old, my mom died in a car accident and my dad decided to sell the farm and I never had the opportunity to share some of those "growing up" places/stories with our kid. It was good that my dad could get off the farm, though, and stop working so hard.

I'm up at 0400 everyday, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No alarm clock. On the very rare occasion I might still be asleep, my dog will wake me at about 0430.

I know how you guys feel.

My childhood home is about 300 yards from my current home. My parents still live there. But in 2004, a hurricane put 3 trees on that house. Mom had it repaired but completely remodeled it. It just doesn't feel the same anymore. Especially holidays.

But we have to remember, we are creating those "home" memories for our kids and grandkids now. My new home has become my home for me, the place where the love of my family and the memories of my children are being made.

This is my wife exactly, even the dog part. She's down to the gym usually by 0500. I'm an early riser, just not that early.

I like to get up early in the summer, to catch a few hours before it gets so hot out. If I get stuff done early I get a guilt-free nap in the afternoon.

heh.
I got to sleep around 0400 -- yesterday was the first weekend day not under a burn ban this month, so a lot of folks lit off pastures.
around midnight the wind shifted and freshened up a bit - so a lot of smouldering piles woke back up.
between sirens going up and down the roads and the Aussie Shepherd making sure I was aware of them, I didn't get a lot of sleep.

Someone who's NOT getting up early anymore is Chuck Berry. RIP

I am a night person by nature. It is difficult for me to get to bed before 2AM. 4AM is even better. But, western aerospace firms start early and I have to get up at 5:30AM to get to work on time. So I force myself to go to bed by 12:00 . On the weekends, I catch up and sleep till 9.

I've had occasion, within the past year, to drive past both of my grandparents' houses for the first time since they were sold. It affected me more than I thought it would, just seeing different stuff in the yard and whatnot. Very strange.

IT GOES TO SHOW YOU NEVER CAN TELL.
Apparently there is a recording of johnny be good on a spacecraft hurtling to the stars some 2 billion miles from Earth now. Now if i was an alien that's what I'd want to be hearing and not some politician jibbering on.
