that's good to hear pal, was wondering when youd be leaving that place!

I'm off to Sheffield for a few days tomorrow :) One of the things I want to do is explore the River Rivelin, one of the small rivers which once powered cutlery wheels. I know the river well, but haven't been there since 1993  :D

Is that young Jack, 24 years ago??:D

It has been a year ago since my hometown got flooded horribly. There were seven peoples lost on that day.
I also got damaged rather badly. But it could have been more terrible and I just lost some buildings outside and a lot of stuff in the cellar. So "just" a financial loss.

Have been off from work today for the curch to give my thoughts to the ones we´ve lost. I even knew one of the women - she was in the same class as my sister was.

It will take a long time. But we´ll even manage this effent.

The town will never be the same again - many went away to other towns and villages.

To see how it was last year - watch this https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=flutkatastrophe+simbach+am+inn+2016

Cripes, Andi, terrible stuff.

We on dry ground cannot feel the loss and pain of such a disaster. I hope you are coming out OK, Andi!!
Viel Glück!!

Truly nasty stuff Andi, so sorry for your loss. Was that due to heavy rains alone or something else too, like a dam breach?

On a less somber but still important note, I used the early JB pic, sophisticated NSA type software from my local Best Buy and info gleaned from recent birthday-related posts to render Jack's current mug:

Amazing!

Oh my god Jack! Don't make me start posting photos of myself from 1993? I don't have the mental stamina:D:D

Good gosh Andy. That is hard to even imagine. I hope nothing like that ever happens to you again. That's the best hope I can think of.

Andi- That is shocking, I experienced my Home Town Floods - where I still own my Home- Luckily I was situated up on a rise- The Towns Storm drains were not maintained to the degree that should have been and had old Drums etc- anyway we had a huge downpour for many hours- we have a huge Hill called Pukekohe Hill would you believe  - the rain and all the mud and produce from all the Market Gardens came down through the town like an avalanche, ever animal that was outside was buried - An older chap got out of his stuck car in the raging waters and was basically beheaded as he was swept up against a fence.
The waters literally stopped one inch from my Business doors.
Brand new subdivisions in very nice areas had Sewage Blow back up through their toilets and go right through the whole House- totally ruining the houses.

The footage on some of the links Andi looked just devastating, when there is Life lost - and not only that but the amount of damage- Oh its unbelievable, Im sorry for those who have lost their loved ones my friend.

Jack -it looks like you got lost on the way home from a Graham Parker and the Rumour gig or was it Wreckless Eric?

That was a terrifying experience Andi I'm glad you are OK.
The power of nature is not to trifled with-
here is an example-when Mt Pinataubo in the Philippines went off in 1991 it pumped more carbon monoxide into the atmosphere in one day than the entire USA industrial complex does in a year.

When we see whitewater rivers that people raft and kayak that is not the same as floodwater or flash flooding.
Those water courses are constantly or regularly fast flowing and this will keep them relatively clear of flood debris.
There is a grading system for rapids that takes this stuff into account.
Flood water is incredibly dangerous for a few reasons.
People think its just water and treat it like one of those canyon rides at a theme park.
It is fast moving ,weighs thousands of tonnes, contains everything from mud to tree trunks and car bodies as well as large boulders and dead animals.
You usually cant float in it and you definitely can't breathe it.
Once the flooding abates and the water is still and safe looking it is even more dangerous from germs and parasites that lurk in it from overflowed sceptics and sewers.
Case in point -the bottom of Mt Keira has Byarong Creek -a normally green sluggish trickle that you can cross without getting wet feet.
During our occasional heavy rains it becomes a brown turbulent torrent with an increase in depth of 10 feet or more.
A few years ago
I stopped at the bridge one afternoon where people had gathered to watch in awe the spectacle of 3 local boys all of whom I know personally -one being the son of one of my best mates-jumping on their boogie boards and surfing down under the road bridge, scrabbling out downstream and doing it again.
Old misery guts killjoy told them in no uncertain terms to please stop and not go in that water.
I think you can all imagine the language of that short conversation.
Happy to say we are still friends -they went off with tails between legs and totally bedraggled-not sure if that was from the creek water or the telling off I gave them.
It rained so hard on that occasion that the very next day the same trio of testosterone touched tarzans were seen boogie boarding again.
This time down the steep street at the end of my street.
It was a river.
The water flowing downhill was a inches deep-and that is a lot of water.
No one was driving up it so must have been safe ,right? All 3 of these young men surf and sail -must know what they're doing -right?
Wrong.
Case #2
Just this year an 11 yo boy was boogie boarding in the rain with his mates at a nearby park with a steep grassy hill.
Sounds like fun.
Trouble is the water has to go somewhere.
In this case down a small drain at the bottom of the hill across the footy field and down into a pipe under the road .
The hydraulic force took him through the grating and his body was retrieved from the pipe days later when the water had gone down.
Utterly tragic and avoidable.
