"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I got up to the mountains here in NC for a little fly fishing yesterday. I usually like to fish tiny little wild streams. Here's a pic of a wild rainbow I caught. The camera really doesn't do the colors justice. These little wild fish have very bright pinks and blues.

This is about typical size for what I catch in those streams, although some will go bigger. The biggest wild trout I ever caught was a 19" rainbow from a stream barely 10' across.

At one point, trying to climb over a rock, I managed to lose my footing and slide, waist deep, into the creek. It was too hot for waders, so I was just wearing shorts and wading boots. I got wet right down to my underwear, and jammed my finger on a rock. Duh. :D My Case CV stockman required a bit of cleaning after spending the rest of the day in a wet pocket, but it will be all right. Still a great day on the water.

Thanks for the kind words, fellas. Much appreciated.

The losses of life due to water was tragic, indeed. It was a senseless loss.

Yes, ist was a horrible experience nobody would want have again. The waters that came was contaminated with oil and liquid manure. The whole town smelled even weeks after so much. We had no water for a few days and even when the water was running it was not to drink. The pipes could have been contaminated from backflows and whatsoever. Many houses and buildings had to be removed because of contamination. Many families went away.

Today a lot of damage is repaired and houses were built new. But there are two ages now. One before the flood and one after. It will take a long time to get all over this.

Luckily the State gave compensation for the people that had no insurance against flooding.

But it still are hard times - especially when you are talking to people that lost so much/ everything and the worst is to talk to people that lost family members/friends.

One of you guys was asking about it was a breach of a dam. No, it was no breach. It was so much rain. The town is in a valley and the water could go nowhere. There was even a controlled dam breach to let the water flow out faster into the river Inn beyond the dam.

Andi, a dreadful event, one that really changes people and a place, almost like a plague does. Nature is master but man is all too often foolish enough to try and ignore this. I'm glad you are contributing again on here.

Thanks, Will

Hi folks, hope everyone is OK. I got back from 3 enjoyable, but rather tiring, days in Sheffield last night. Did a lot of walking and exploring. I'll hopefully write something up in due course. Here's a pic of my Harrison Fisher Crown Penknife at Sheffield's Mousehole Forge (that's the remains of the outflow from the dam) on the River Rivelin

The events of London came as a shock obviously :(

It has been a year ago since my hometown got flooded horribly. There were seven peoples lost on that day.
I also got damaged rather badly. But it could have been more terrible and I just lost some buildings outside and a lot of stuff in the cellar. So "just" a financial loss.

Have been off from work today for the curch to give my thoughts to the ones we´ve lost. I even knew one of the women - she was in the same class as my sister was.

It will take a long time. But we´ll even manage this effent.

The town will never be the same again - many went away to other towns and villages.

To see how it was last year - watch this https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=flutkatastrophe+simbach+am+inn+2016

That is terrible Andi :(

On a less somber but still important note, I used the early JB pic, sophisticated NSA type software from my local Best Buy and info gleaned from recent birthday-related posts to render Jack's current mug:

Amazing!
;):p

Oh my god Jack! Don't make me start posting photos of myself from 1993? I don't have the mental stamina:D:D

Jack -it looks like you got lost on the way home from a Graham Parker and the Rumour gig or was it Wreckless Eric?

LOL! :D  I was staying at a hotel over the weekend, opposite the old Sheffield Poly(technic), where I once saw Wreckless Erc! :D

Smoke raised for UK. Again.

Enough with the needing smoke over there. This kind of stuff has to stop!

I wholeheartedly agree.

Best wishes to our friends in the UK.

Thanks a lot guys, sadly people from all over the world are affected :(

Im terribly sorry to hear yet another attack in England Jack - I would simply LOVE to write down in words here just what I think of the Cowards who did this- not the Place though.
That Harrison Fisher is a Corker Jack - well done my friend.

I think i may be 10 years too late with Wreckless Eric - closer to 83.
Strangely I just watched a movie entitled "Radio On" on youtube.I haven't seen it since about 1982 when it came to Australia. It has the music of Wreckless,Kraftwerk and the Rumour and Bowie
An Anglo German film from 1979- very arty farty, very black and white with cold English wintery overtones-and a bit depressing-very grey. Beautifully filmed.
I didn't understand it then and don't understand it nowo_O:rolleyes::p.
But it does have this and I know it made me feel better for seeing it

I am finally home sitting in my chair with my laptop :) I want to thank everyone for the kind words of encouragement, cards and gifts. You folks are the greatest. I can't drive for a bit and my hair has grown into a brown and white bush so I'm going to get someone to take me to the barbershop. My luck must be changing I had wanted a #13 Whip before I went into the hospital but put all purchases on hold. I got to looking at the dealers I usually go to and they were all sold out so I started down the list of GEC Dealers and found a Rust Red Jigged Bone and it is on the way. I had spent my birthday in the hospital so I counted it as a belated birthday gift to myself. :D A member that goes by ATJ999 did me a favor and I promised to send him a knife to say thanks. I guess he thinks I'm the biggest liar on the porch I told him I would send it in a few days not realizing my little hospital trip would last 7 weeks. Anyway sorry for rambling I'm just glad to be back.

Randy it does us all well to read your post.

My wife just found out her brother was in a motorcycle accident a couple days ago in Houston. His roommate finally called the hospitals when he didnt come home. 7 broken ribs, a couple cracked vertebrae, a punctured lung, and internal bleeding has him ICU. He has a surgery scheduled for tomorrow.

Laura is taking a flight to Houston at 4am and will be gone 5 days. The girls and I are staying here in TN.

Im not a hockey fan, but I have to admit it is cool to see the Preds doing well.

Good to have you back, Randy!

Best wishes to your B-I-L, Brett. My dad grew up on dirt bikes but only owned a street bike for a couple weeks. Went over the hood of some old lady that pulled out of an intersection. Decided to stick to dirt after that. With so many distracted drivers on the road today, I don't see how anyone can ride a bike on the street.

Thanks Shawn, appreciate that. He basically did the same. Raining, trucked pulled out, he smacked it , flipped over the hood, and slide under another car. He's lucky to be breathing imo. Laura and him arent close at all. I think the fact that they aren't has her just as shakin up about as his injury.
