"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Its crazy. I have not experienced any of the problems some have encountered with the new software. Not one single one.
I did have plenty of the issues being mentioned (and more) with the old software though. Strange.

Photobucket is now charging $399.99 a year for 3rd party hosting (i.e. posting photos on a forum) !!

http://photobucket.com/p500/

Unfortunately, this will probably cause a lot of photos to be missing from old posts.

I think http://imgur.com/ still allows 3rd party hosting.
Is this Photobucket policy change the reason for all the "update your account speedometers" that have recently appeared? I've never used Photobucket, so I don't know what services they provide or what their previous fees were, but this sure seems like an astronomical price increase to me!:(

I'm sure Jake's claim about photos disappearing from old posts is true, and I consider that way less than ideal.:thumbsdown:
I've only been a BF member for 3 years, so I often get immense enjoyment from just choosing a topic of interest and then searching for and reading through relevant old threads. I already get a bit disappointed and frustrated when I encounter photos missing because the original posters let the photo "lapse"; I suspect old threads will be almost worthless now if all Photobucket-based pics disappear because of the company's unilateral decision.

Yes, this photobucket thing is upsetting. If they changed their terms of service for new postings, I would almost call it fair, but to no longer support the old links is awful.
I have most of my pictures backed up on my computer, but I can't imagine going back to re-edit 7 years of posts. And a lot of threads have pictures posted by members who are no longer active here. A lot of good information is being erased from the archives.

Is it safe to assume then that any image added using the native software, ie with the Upload A File button, will be preserved for at least as long as this software is? I'd like to think so....

So far PB hasn't nuked all my posted images - I wonder if they are doing some kind of slow roll through all accounts, or just by bandwidth, or what? I am pretty sure very few people will pay $400 per year for "free image hosting" so what will most likely happen is that everyone will quit using Photobucket. I know that I'll just delete all my pics from their site if they do the same to me.

Edit - spoke too soon. They came for me today.

I downloaded all my photos and deleted the account, so all of my former image links will fail now. I guess I will re-upload everything elsewhere.

I was just reading through PB's terms of service, I thought Ad-Free was $9.99 a year, but seems they increased it to $2.49 a month (I pay by Direct Debit). I think that includes third party image hosting (test pic below - if you can see it I'm right). I have a lot of pics posted on the site, which is the reason I upgraded, but it seems poor value, particularly as the text of most of my old threads reads like gibberish now, because of the BF software changes.

Padruig, mostly I use Safari as I have a Macbook not a PC. I have a smartphone but dislike using it for more or less anything and use my arrested development phone for just calls, texts&the odd multi media message.

This horror from P-Bucket means the extinction of vast amounts of archive material on the Forum, it's a barbarism like book-burning or trying to wipe out the past! I don't want to pay them anything, am inherently suspicious of direct debits-they can be raised stealthily unless you remain hawk like vigilance . Moreover, P-Bucket's service has been unreliable therefore I feel no inclination to start paying them at all. Beginning to go into a hate everything mode...:poop::mad:

Switched to Imgur. Let's test with some cat pics.

I made a massive mistake, I cleaned up my Photobucket that was over 140 pages with Knife photos and it was impossible to find/ catalog them as the pages changed as more photos came in.
When I did this, I did not think about the massive loss of photos from my previous posts- so theres nothing but gaps now - and wasted space for BF.

I went into Photobucket now as one of the older photos that I kept- because it has Izzy in the Photo - I just copied it to se if there was any problem, but doesnt seem to be one.

Izzy in her prime...

Nope - can't see Izzy......

Just went and locked my Custom knife history thread, because of photoblackout.

I may go fix the photos later, I don't know?

Just shows the "Upgrade your account" pic for me. If you are still logged in to Photobucket, or have your account set up to always log in, YOU can still see it. It may also be a cached image in your browser.

When I specifically logged out of PB, then refreshed the page with CTRL-F5 to clear the cache, all of mine went to the PB ransom note. So I went to my account, downloaded all of my photos, then deleted them from PB and deleted the account. I have uploaded a few of them to Imgur which seems to work very well and is much less cluttered. I should have done it ages ago.

Wow...
You are right guys! John I did all that you suggested and yep - there it is- the upgrade your account notice..... yet before that I could see the photo...
Thank you for your help with this- I will have to sort something out.

There should be a link on the PB page to download your entire library. They put it all into a massive zip file and it downloads to your PC. You can then bulk upload the entire thing (after unzipping) to a newly created Imgur account. Problem is, all of your links will be broken so you'll either have to go back and find the old ones and edit posts, or just skip it and use the new links going forward, leaving all of your past image posts vandalized.

My reaction was to delete all of my photos after downloading and delete the account, which is what I did. If I felt like being vindictive, I would instead leave the account there, create a very large image file expressing my opinion of them, and upload however many copies of it would fit in the free account, and then just never return, leaving them stuck storing it for as long as they stay in business.

But you know, it has been a completely free service to me for years, and I suppose they need to make money somehow. All of the spammy ads they forced on you were apparently not a good business model. But it would have been nice if they had provided some sort of warning. I feel they have shot themselves in the foot here and will probably not recover. It's not like they are the only option.

Will, I always use Safari on my MacBook Pro to access BladeForums and I've experienced NONE of the logout etc. problems you've reported. So it doesn't seem likely that some kind of browser glitch is the source of your difficulties (unless we have to consider specific versions of browser and/or MacBook operating system).

If I read the new PB "terms of service" correctly, the $2.49/month account does not let you link to your photos. It appears to me that only the $400/year allows that.

I was willing to pay $10/year. $2.50 a month is iffy. $400 is not happening. I'll probably wait till I figure out what's what. In the meantime, let's see if this shows up...

It's $399, paid annually, for unlimited 3rd party hosting. I can only assume that they are wanting to drive out casual users completely and only serve businesses who want images hosted. I have bad news for them - there are MUCH better commercial image-hosting companies.

It appears that it depends on where you look . This morning I found it for $3.99 per month . Now it is $5.99 per month for 52.0 GB of storage or $9.99 per month for 102 GB OR $39.99 per month for 502 GB AND I also saw $399 .00 for a year .

Free service goes to pay. Imagine that. ;) Oh well, it is what it is ain't no way I can change it. Have a nice weekend guys.
