"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I'm feeling your pain Jack. I hope you soon get things
straightened out.

Thanks my friend, I'm sure we can all think of better things to do than dealing with this sort of stuff. It just all seems to have come at once recently. I just want to post about traditional pocket knives!

I hate Windows 10, but it hasn't done to me anything like it does to you, Jack. (I hate it so much I still haven't switched this computer to linux.)

Yeah, I find the Apple software quirky as I haven't used it anywhere near as much as Microsoft, but I'm sold Alan. Annoyingly, I only bought a new PC just before Windows 10 appeared. I was thinking about replacing it with Linux in the short-term, but my next computer is definitely going to be Apple. I don't want to come home again to find I can't even get into my computer, and that when I eventually do, it's been altered to look like a teenager's phone, with moving tiles linking to all sorts of stupid games and social media sites, my bookmarks trashed, and all the settings and preferences altered and locked. Windows 10 is a virus

I was up until 3.30am, but managed to get my bookmarks back. I'm going to have to spend the rest of the week messing around with this stuff though because of changes made to my property which I didn't consent to. It's like a load of clueless idiots broke into my house while I was out, had a go at redecorating, threw paint all over the walls, and then ran off leaving junk all over the place

Thanks for the support my friend

Here's wishing all my friends in the USA a very happy 4th July, and since I haven't had a chance to take a pic of my EDC this morning, here's a pic of Earl :)

(Good old Windows! Can't upload directly until I can fix that now too!)

I did a little digging and it seems like this update *forced* on users for "security" is actually an early version of a new release coming on the Fall to be called Creators Kit or some such thing. It seems a LOT of folks are having similar issues. It does redecorate your desktop and move things around. Fine if you know what's coming and, if it works correctly. We can see that this was not the case Jack? This recent spate of ransomware that has been in the news seems to be driving this decision.
Mac is certainly not perfect either, but I have never heard of a complete crap explosion or anything close to what you're dealing with.

It was certainly bad luck to get locked out of my account TWICE Jer, but from looking online, it seems that plenty of folks have had it worse :(

Yes Alan, terrible if you're trying to get some work done :( Ransomware is just what it is, since to get access to your account (even if it's working as intended) you have to hand access to everything over to Microsoft. What an appalling way to treat customers. I've had no problem with any of the previous versions of Windows, but Windows 10 is something else

It is a huge complaint of a very large number of users. That's to be expected to some extent because while MSFT controls the software, they don't control the hardware as does Apple. Nevertheless they have something like 90% of the installed base. So a LOT of people are going to have problems. Since Apple has complete control, they get a premium for their hardware. I'm stating the obvious here, sorry. I have tried linux in a dual boot situation. It works well because most of the software written for it is well tested and again, limited release.
I'm sure you would rather change the subject now my friend.
So, on to celebrations of Independence in the US and other things.

I tried Linux a few times 15 years ago or so, and wasn't too impressed, but I gather it's a lot better these days. I only need some pretty basic software in any case. I'm sure a few folks are wishing I'd change the record! :D Thanks for your advice and support Alan. Have a great holiday folks :)

I used to run Ubuntu on a laptop and liked it a lot.
the newer version is supposed to be a lot easier to load and use.
you can test it out without actually installing it by downloading it to a flash drive and using that to boot your computer.

Hope you get everything sorted, Jack! I've been very lucky with Windows 10, apparently. I built my machine in October, and I haven't had a single issue with Win10's stability. *Knocks on wood* I have found my "Privacy" settings changed before, though, which is super shady and shows how much the almighty dollar rules.

Windows 10 is a virus

Truth.

I reached the same conclusion. Fortunately, my Win 10 crashed and required a complete reloading, which required wiping the disk. So, I wiped the disk and reinstalled Win 7, the last decent OS Microsoft made. When Win 7 goes obsolete I may settle for a "Chrome book".

IMO, Microsoft has abandoned the desktop market in an attempt to capture the tablet and phone market. They are trying for "one ring to rule them all", and have come up with a system that is "all thumbs".

Thanks for the info :) Yes, I'll probably try it out like that first, but Windows 10 definitely has to go, every time they force an update on me, I feel like I've been burgled! ::confused:

Thanks Shawn, hope it stays like that my friend  Watch out for that next update!

Yeah, I wish I still had Windows 7 Frank  And Microsoft are now leaving W7 users alone, and not trying to pester/trick/force them into switching 10, like they did previously

My brother in law is quite taken with his Chromebook.

I don't know anyone who has one of those, might check them out, thanks for the tip guys  My Ipad Mini works pretty well, never had an issue with it apart from my hands being too big! :D

Padruig Thanks for your explanations and point of view about the Terms of Service. It just unnerves me when corporations talk about "We shall be the judge of this"....

My pleasure, Will. I've sent Imgur an email requesting clarification. I will provide an update here if and/or when I hear back from them.

I was spared the Windows 10 debacle. When my Windows 8.1 PC started nagging me everyday about upgrading I asked my son, who is a Network Admin, whether I should do it. His advise was steer clear of 10. He'd tried it and ditched it. With all the horror stories I hear I'm glad I took his advise.

I missed the Imgur scare. Oh, well.
I know, we'll put on our own image hosting service! Your mom can make the costumes, and I'll ask Dad if we can build a stage in the barn!

But seriously,
I wound that 3-dollar mechanical watch by Caravelle of Japan, which makes no claim to having any jewels in it, 46.5 hours ago, and it's still showing exactly the same time as the quartz I set it from.

Sounds like a lucky escape Gary

HELP!! I need to delete some conversation I'm over the limit and can't find where to do it on this "new and improved Blade Forums". Can someone please let me know how to delete conversations? :confused:o_O

Hey Randy, I've not had to face that one yet, but I think there's a thread about it in Tech
