"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The Photobucket thing is pretty infuriating. With the exception of a few very early posts (for which I used, I think, TinyPic), all of the photos I've shared here now show up as Photobucket's annoying pay-us-$400-a-year speedometer. :(

I may go back and edit a couple threads (I really enjoy posting in the "Traditional Knives in Movies" thread, so I may re-host those screenshots and edit the links in my posts there), and thankfully I still have all the photos I've ever put up on Photobucket stored elsewhere, but it's pretty disappointing that most of the photos I've ever posted here won't show up in my posts anymore. (I went through a lot of other non-Porch-friendly terms before settling on "infuriating" and "disappointing." :D)
I admire your impressive self-control when it came to word choice, Barrett! ;)

...
One thing to note for anyone who comes across the Photobucket speedometer thing in old posts: you can still see the image by right clicking the speedometer image and clicking "Open Image in New Window." It isn't ideal, but as long as the user hasn't removed the image from Photobucket, it can still be viewed at the link in the post, just not imbedded in the post itself.
I've had no success with Barrett's suggestion so far. The "New Window" I open just shows me the PB speedometer (but maybe each case I've tried is one in which the user has removed the image from PB).

...
Uploading pictures directly from my computer is working well, and I like the idea of not being vulnerable to the next image hosting site to go belly-up. I have not yet gotten a definitive answer as to if there is a limit to how many photos we may upload.

r8shell, the following post claims 20MB of storage are available to members with Gold membership. That doesn't seem like very much at all; as Jake points out, that's about 200 photos, but my current imgur account has nearly 1200 pics, most of which have been posted at least once somewhere in BF.

GT, I think Bladeforums provides 20MB of storage with a Gold membership. That's a small amount of space but good enough for 200 photos that are 100kb. I had much more in my Photobucket.

Btw...I don't know what happens if there's a Bladeforums membership lapse. My photos disappeared but I don't know if they are brought back after a renewal.
Thanks for the info, Jake. Do you happen to know where I can find out details about the BladeForums storage, or what an effective search term might be? Probably the Tech Support thread is the most likely place to look, right?

(Details of interest to me: Can I see the contents of my storage space? May I copy images from my storage space into a new post without using up more space? Does attempting to post another image once limit has been reached simply fail, or does it push the oldest item out of storage to make room for the new one?)

Alan, I though to myself you're just killing it lately, and that's before I got to this one. That granddaughter is a cutey pie!

I have to wonder about the wisdom of using photo hosting sites here going forward. Other forums I've been on supported native file hosting only. (That was a few years ago, so things may have changed.) By switching to another hosting site, are we just setting ourselves up for another huge fail down the line? What PB does today, any other site could do so tomorrow. For a forum with such long legs and that is so image-rich, I'm hoping Spark @Spark gives this some consideration.

I started a thread in tech support asking about that. I'm not sure my questions were clearly expressed, so please feel free to jump in over there and maybe we can figure this out. I don't want to spend a lot of time and energy editing in pictures until I know more.

I'm still posting pics successfully from PhotoBucket.
The notice says that paid memberships will run to the end of their current term before the new terms apply. I had a $10/yr account which I renewed last February. So I should have at least 8 months to go before they cancel me.

In the meantime, I always use the "direct" code, instead of the IMG code. Someone once posted that if you do that, it does not count as third party hosting and PB can't track it. Not sure if it is true, but so far my $10 account is still functioning.

Thanks for the info Frank  I'm in a similar position, but I'm going to stop using the PB code, I guess it doesn't matter so much with some of the threads, but I'd like some of my other pics to stay in place if possible, and who knows where PB is headed

I just did a search on myself and found an old 2006 post with a still intact PB image. I haven't used PB in months (never was a paying customer), since I started using imgur. I imagine PB will catch up with me sooner or later. I figure there's no way of insuring that anything I put on the web will be permanent. There's just too many things that can go wrong. I have all my pics backed up on a number of hard drives and I guess that's still no guarantee.

It's all "dust in the wind" anyway, as sung by Kansas.

Ya know what's good for soothing the photo bucket woes? Comfort food.

My wife and I tried making the fried chicken recipe from Thomas Keller's Ad Hoc restaurant. It started last night with an elaborate brine:

After a 12-hour soak, the chicken pieces air dried for 1.5 hours and were buttermilk breaded:

Then fried:

And served with corn on the cob:

As you can see, we let the oil get a bit too hot, but the insides were still super moist and tasty. It wasn't the best fried chicken we've ever eaten, but it was the best we've ever made. We will definitely be giving this recipe another shot.

I hope you all have a good rest of your Sunday and that the US folks have a fun, festive, and safe Independence Day on Tuesdsay! And, a belated Happy Canada Day to our friends to the north.

I made a Thanksgiving turkey once following a recipe that used a brine soaking. I remember the ingredients that went into the brine, which are all disposed of, ended up costing more than the turkey did.

That is some good looking fried chicken, Greg! Darn! Now I'm hungry!
Our favorite chicken dish is "Ida's Chicken" from one of Frank Pelligreno's cook books, "Rao's Recipes From the Neighborhood". Good stuff!

Thank you Tom:

I find it ironic that tech pundits in the news are always warning us "be careful what you put on the internet, it never goes away"? Apparently it can and does. o_O

Just found a benefit to Imgur that I did not know was there. I can make an image "private" but it still posts to this forum using BBCode. Makes sense, I just never thought about it until I posted the pic of my granddaughter. I will have to try that on Flickr too. As I said, that is going to be my platform going forward if I can make it work.

Perhaps a better quote would be "Be careful what you put on the Internet - you lose control over how long it stays there, who might see it, and how it is used."

Better way to describe what's going on now John. Thanks!

Knowing my luck, the stuff I'd want to be permanent will disappear, and that which might cause me some concern will last till doomsday.

Yes, that's the "warning" aspect of it. Your beautiful, well composed photos of majestic nature scenes - gone in an instant. Pics of you drunk with magic marker all over your face will become a permanent meme image shared the world over.

Same here Gary. Still, I do try to make pics of family friends and especially me, private when possible.

Oh no! You found that? :D

I'm in my 60s and wasn't paying attention when everyone started using social media. I tried a few things but it's not my cup of tea. This is about the only place I post anything on the web, and I try and be selective about it. Just my personality I guess.
