I suspect he gambled it away since he was a frequent visitor to Biloxi and Cherokee.

I guess I should go to Cherokee more often as my grandmother was full blooded Cherokee and we only live about 30 minutes away. But my wife and I have only been to Harrah's Casino there once several years ago. We went to see Kenny Rogers perform and dine but thought we would try our hand at the video poker machines that was before they had dealers. So I took $100 to gamble with and gave my wife $100 that was my first mistake as she has her own money (more than me). My money was gone in about an hour but my wife won $800 on the slots so I asked her for the money I gave her back since she won. Her response was " it's not my fault you lost and besides you gave me the money".:eek::D

A local barber won twice, each time $100,000 tax free. About two years apart IIRC. I asked him how he spent it, first win bought his mom a new house, he never said about the second win but I suspect he gambled it away since he was a frequent visitor to Biloxi and Cherokee.

easy come easy go huh?
thats how the statistics roll.
most winners blow it all some how.
back to beggars row.

I haven't seen him in quite a while, maybe he did invest it (or may have won again). A guy would have to cut a lot of hair at $15 a pop to make a $100,000 after taxes.

I traveled throughout a lot of the South in my job. One of the restaurant-bars in Calhoun, GA had special monitors with Keno draws every three minutes. You could bet as little as a quarter. Those are the only times I actually made a little money. This was twenty years ago I guess. A lot of people here make Cherokee a lot of money :D cause I never hear much about big wins.

I used to work for a casino company, so I know about that business. Next time you walk in one, look at the building, the decorations, the pretty lights, all the people working there. Then think about the corporate headquarters, all of those employees, the highly paid VP and C-level executives, and the shareholders. Then there is the taxes that the state gets, directly from the casino - not including from your winnings. ALL of that money to pay for ALL that stuff comes from YOUR pockets, you and all of the other casino patrons. That's how much everyone loses in aggregate, all the time.

We used to use a figure that an average slot machine nets about $80,000 profit per year, divided across all of the machines at a site. I don't think I ever knew what the table games brought it.

No need to go to a casino these days anyway. Just open up an E-trade account and bet your money at the Wall Street casino. The game works about the same, and the house always wins.

I lived in a very small town that had a local American Legion with video poker machines, the machines paid off at a higher ratio than usual (per the guy that installed them). Folks would stand in line, I mean literally have a number, to get on the machines. The house made money but not like the ones sitting in convenience stores.

No idea. That was set during the time when there was a lot of mob involvement in casinos. Supposedly based on a book that was about real situations in the 70s-80s.

My tenure was during the time (1990s) they were all typical US corporations with publicly traded stocks. Everything was on the up and up. All manner of surveillance systems and there were state agents who had offices on site with similar monitoring equipment and they could also watch the watchers. It's big business - there's no need for anything shady.

I've been in a casino exactly one time... To eat their Surf & Turf.:D

We have a casino right down the road from us, and the first time my in-laws came to visit, the they all went down there, signed up for players club cards, used their $10 in free slot play and ate the free buffet they got for signing up, and I doubt they'll ever go back again.

(I, on the other, have been back one or two dozen times. ;) :D)

A very wet cold and rainy day here so I ended up trawling British Pathe, the old newsreel archive. I love watching old newsreels; I find them fascinating.
Anyway I came across these. Apologies if they've been posted before but I'm sure you'll find them mildly interesting.
Some of the footage is repeated and I think two are silent but the commentary in the last one elaborates on the others.

The casino in Sydney .
I went twice.
Years apart.
Never again.
Why did I go?
With a group of mates and they serve beer.
The main difference i noticed is that
In a normal bar or pub they will not serve you if they suspect you are drunk....yeah don't quite get that either because you are going there for the purpose of drinking alcohlol.
I suppose it helps avoid trouble with troublesome types.
The Casino however is a bit different.
They tuck the box for responsible service of alcohol but I noticed they kept serving me beer until i was flyblown and maggoted.
Didnt spend a cent at the tables either.
I was bringing rounds to my mates who were eagerly tearing up dollar bills and throwing them away at the blackjack.
Legend has it that on one occasion a particularly inebriated rugby league player went number 3s in hus empty schooner glass whilst standing at the table putting bets on. Instead of turfing the idiot out they gave him a refill.....in a new glass....and removed his full one.

We had a bad cold spell right after the apple trees blossomed last spring, so my apple orchard crop is pretty skimpy this year, and my Dad's orchard has absolutely 0 apples in it. We always make homemade cider each year, and that is tough to do without apples, so my Dad and I made plans to go this past Saturday to pick apples a little south of us where the frost didn't hit the trees. We were supposed to take his wife, my sister and her husband, and my wife and daughter. But everyone backed out last minute, so just my Dad and I drove to get apples.

It turned out to be a really nice day, just the 2 of us. We went to 4 different apple farms, picked many different varieties of apples, and came home with 12 bushel total. I'm sure I would have had fun with the whole family in tow, but it was really cool to spend a few hours with my Dad.

Wish I could do that with my dad, but he's gone. You never realize how you take simple stuff for granted, until you can't do it anymore. That's the good stuff right there, reminds us all that we have to slow down and "pick the apples" every once in a while. Thanks for sharing this.

My dad passed when I was young I never got to do a lot with him because he worked two jobs and tended our small farm. I am so glad you got that time with your dad.
