Carothers and Guns

Very nice pairing.

I ask a lot of folks the same question when they turn their nose up at .380, 9mm, even .22 - "Do you want to get hit with that?" The answer is generally a short "no".

I figure most people, when they're shot in the face, it doesn't really matter, they're probably going to stop doing whatever is bothering you.

You could probably play a recording of a gunshot and most folks would shove off

Very, very few people outside of LEO are ever involved in any citizen related shooting incidents under the guise of self-defense. Subtract mass shootings/armed rubbery/murder/terrorism/suicide/domestic violence and gun related death cases really go down to very very few in their annual numbers if you also happen to subtract for negligent/accidental cases!

Ever since the advent of social media and YT in particular, the caliber debates have become a very hot topic because shooting targets such as cast iron skillets, ballistic gels, soda jugs, junkyard jalopies, etc, earn clicks and earn followers and finally can monetize the content provider's endeavors. And since YT has been clamping down on the monetizing aspect people go to Patreon for their funding source.

As for your comment, you don't even wanna be shot in the face with dart or an airgun let alone any rimfire or centerfire weapon of any caliber!

This little guy went on the chopping block today as unused fodder. The glock, not the blade... Rarely ever the blade. Great time to sell a gun!

I carried a baby Glock for a lot of years (are they still considered baby Glocks with the 42s and 43s now in the lineup?). Great carry piece especially with the finger extension on the mags.

I like those EDC knives... I may have to cave and try to find one - so far, I've been pretty content with the CPKs I have but that EDC has piqued my interest more than once.

My little .380 ACP Beretta was always plenty enough for a nice and secure neighborhood for a suburb of San Diego County :) Had I been living in the sticks or a ranch/farm in say TX, I'd pack everyday with my LTC something with much more oomph, a lot more ;)

The only time that I am intentional with my chosen carry caliber (aside from lack of adequate range time with a new gun) is when I am bow hunting. It isn't unusual to get up close and personal with bears but I feel much better with either a .45 or .44 mag, even then, I am still somewhat dubious... Otherwise, if I can shoot good with it and it suits my carry needs for the day, then the caliber isn't a big point of consideration.

(I hope that makes sense)

When I worked in Law Enforcement, one of the first things we learned in the academy was the Use of Force Continuum. Presence was the very first item on such a list - so much can be deterred by the simple presence of a firearm (with LE, the uniform and such plays into that as well). The sight of a gun can certainly diffuse a sketchy situation pretty darned quick.

(Bears though... Bears don't give a damn, until you shoot them - then they get pissed :D)

I had to abandon a lot of firearms related forums and social media discussions in the past because the caliber debate gets very tiresome. The scientific discussions can be very fascinating but the otherwise rather "mall ninja(ish)" commentary gets excruciatingly wearing... The only YouTube guy that I will watch on occasion is Hickok45 (not sure if he is on YT anymore though, it's been awhile.)

Any fondness for black powder here? I must say, I'm quite a fan... But I also love cowboy stuff so, there is that :D.

Dylan, BP is something I've been wanting to get into. We have a whole separate muzzle loader season here just after archery, and one of these days I'd like to participate.

We have the same over here and I've been wanting to get into it forever. Some of the modern BP stuff is pretty sophisticated these days - my Springfield is one heavy SOB but she shoots real nice. I even won a shooting competition with it.

Yeah, the in-line BP muzzleloaders are almost like cheating. CO has other rules, like you can't use a sabot, I believe it must be .50 cal or greater, etc. More toys, not enough time, and more money needed, lol. I gots too many hobbies!!! ;)

Cheating is right...
I am surprised you can't use sabots. It's been awhile since I've checked our regs but last I saw, they could still be used.

I hear you on everything else - never enough time, money, and/or space!

EDIT: I was wrong, sabots are banned over here too.

CO at least maintains the archery and muzzleloader seasons to try and keep the methods somewhat primitive. I know muzzleloaders cannot be scoped, iron sights only, and you can't use smokeless powder. Our bows cannot have anything electronic on them (a camera is allowed, but that's it) or anything that emits light. We only became allowed to use lighted nocks just a few seasons ago.

In some respects, that does limit what my costs would be. I'd just need to get a decent BP rifle and learn to shoot it well. I've always been pretty good with iron sights, so that's not too big an issue for me. Maybe next year's season, lol... ;)

I concur that some firearm specific forums, specially the 2Aers on YT, are really out there for my own personal tastes and my mild mannered political views. I find most of those fellas as insufferable as say if I was hanging out on some PETA forums where even hunting for sustenance and conservation is viewed as barbaric and treated with utmost disdain. Anyway, I drift again...

I used to watch Hickock45 and he's still around but now he brings in his son more into the frame (used to be the one taping him) and also some other guys. I think that it's cool that he goes through a whole array of different guns and ammo so that in and of itself have some learning value but other than giving him recognition for being an excellent shot, I don't learn much else from him.

I still follow aa few YT'ers but I tune out the comments for the reasons given in the first paragraph. Although nothing replaces real practice with real instructors and real settings, I have also come to find out that real and REALLY GOOD are two very different metrics ;) I think that I have found some really good ones so if you ever get the time, look into Paul Harrell and GunBlue490 for learning. Neither are remotely Mall-Ninja types. JMHO :)

Hickock45 is a damned fine shot, isn't he? I've seen him shoot snubbies in a way that blows my mind. I've practiced and practiced on the one I have (Ruger LCR in .357) and still can only manage good consistency at around 15' (20' on a good day).

Though I don't use YT much outside of truck project related stuff, music, and the occasional move preview these days, I'll give your recommendations a look-see. Not like I don't have time to kill these days...

don't have it in hand yet so I can't do a knife and gun shot yet..... but I just ordered this bad boy after a 6 pack of DIPA. Sold a couple safe guns that were just sitting there and found a smoking deal on this A400 Xtreme plus in Kryptek wraith. I have the same gun in Optifade Timber at 26" for Duck and it's so perfect that I had to have it in 30" for clays and trap. thing shoots 3.5" magnums like 20g target ammo. anyways here's my new purchase: (from the website until it shows up, I'll update with a nice FK2 when it arrives)
