Carothers and Guns

Leave Commiefornia for a free state

I feel pretty much free in here ;) For me, it's not as dystopian as some insufferable gun channel fools have you believe. Had I been born and raised elsewhere, maybe. But I’m also eyeing up some other SW states for maybe 5-6 years down the road! Will look into that CZ rifle through and TY.

Counselor? You're well within 500 yards!

Looked into these short barrel rifles chambered in .308 some more and Springfield Armory now has an M1A Tanker version. No deals or anything but they are offering a coupon good thru 4/19 which will get buyers 2 extra mags (M1A mags seem to be proprietary hence not cheap!) plus a scope mount rail which looks kinda cheesy, so I don't know.

The Tanker looks weird so I'm not totally sold on this but the bolt action system is much better on these SA M1As as opposed to the Ruger Gunsite Scout so it may very well be worth the extra $700+, I dunno yet!

So, I am now considering the bolt action scout rifles because heck we have a 10 mag capacity limit anyway so if I ever move anywhere else which is less restrictive, I can always look into a Sig AR platform or something higher end with the bells and whistles which we can not get here in CA anyway. The Springfield Armory M1A Scout with a midrange Leupold scope, no fuss no muss, will put me in the low to mid $2Ks. The Tikka T3x PCR was also another possibility but I will have to pay MSRP (although much lower than the Springfield one) and it also has a longer barrel length. There are also other Scout rifles by other manufacturers for less than the M1A. I'm in no rush and can afford to wait till this current craziness dies down to get a "deal" as these are not popular with our younger crowd anyway!

What sayz you?[/QUOTE]

If you're more into distance shooting and accuracy, then I'd vote Tikka, otherwise the M1A Socom or Scout are solid choices. But you know the answer is to buy both. :D

I like the tanker because I want the wood stock for my Springfield Socom 16 which is the same Gun in a fiberglass stock.
As much as I love that Socom and have used it in a few different States to take Whitetail Deer I have to ask if you’re looking for accuracy or just a shooter? If you’re looking for extreme accuracy you won’t find it in the Tanker without changing a lot of parts and even then, only with some luck.
My Socom will shoot around 1.5 MOA on a good day with good ammo when in a TROY Modular Chassis System but when in its fiberglass stock it can open up to 4 moa. As you’re probably aware, you can get MUCH better accuracy out of a much cheaper bolt gun. putting glass on top of an M1A is not as simple as putting glass on a bolt gun and a scoped bolt gun will usually weigh less than a stock M1A so if you’re going to do any walking with it that’s farther than the shooting bench you may want to take that into consideration.
If you’re just buying a rifle to have it because you like it, not as a hunting arm, that M1A in wood is hard to beat! My experience with two of them finds that they’re every bit as reliable as the marketing says they are, the iron sights, like the M1 Garand, are the best stock rifle sights ever made, and the trigger is also outstanding. Fun wise, they’re very hard to beat.

edit to add.

Oh, and if you end up with that Tanker, get some 168gr Barnes Vortex TTSP for the shots that you need to be precise and any bulk NATO 7.62 for plinking. The Barnes are the best shooting rounds that I’ve found for either of my M1A’s and it’s digested every bulk ammo from every Country that you can think of ( that sold off bulk 7.62 ) without a hiccup.

LOL, Darren. I was reading your post and because your quotation marks didn't come out right, I was reading and reading and thinking to myself, "wow, Darren just posted something exactly like what I had written before!" :D

Like we had discussed this privately a while ago, I luv that Tikka PCR and with a decent to good glass, it will be still in the M1A range.

1AA1, you hot so many great points which halt me in my tracks. I actually like the Socom Scout with the fiberglass stock but then agin, the cool factor about the M1As with the wood furniture is the old world charm. I had already gathered that putting glass on the Tanker is not an easy task so yup, thank you and I'll keep looking bud

I have never had any handgun holster made with Kydex so I was digging around the CZ site (the one by the CZ owners not the official CZ-USA one) and seemed most were happy with Vedder Esso I checked out their site and order two, one for my PC-01 and one for RAMI. There was like a 15% off coupon and I went for the qualifying IWB LightTuck in their carbon fiber effect (Holstex) and added claw attachment.

Kinda after the facts but if you have Vedder's, are you happy with them? I don't plan on carrying just for dry fire practices, drills plus just parking the gun in something when at home (safe home, no kids). Still hope that their quality is on the upside for kydex holster.

Just to add to the above, I love OWB leather holsters for my handguns. Having good friends in here who are also great leather craftsmen for knives, has left me wanting and yearning when it comes to leather for guns (I know of DeSantis, Azula and some others).

If you want some really nicely made leather then check out Milt Sparks. I’ve owned three of their Versa Max II holsters and can say that they’re without question superior in fit and finish than any off the shelf big name manufacturers.
I’m more of a Kydex kind of guy since my guns are just Glocks, HK’s, and Sig’s. Nothing special so I’m not terribly concerned about them getting marked up. For a few years I’ve been going the minimalist route on holsters and have been using a Raven Concealment rig that just covers the trigger guard and leaves the rest of the gun uncovered. It’s as thin of a carry sysytem as I can find which helps hide the pistol on my 6’3, 225 pound frame well enough that I can carry a full size gun without anyone noticing- which is the whole point :)
If I get the Freedom Arms 97 that I’m after, it’ll get some nice leather.

It won't bother me at all if I mark up my CZs. I'll be checking out Milt Sparks for something-something for my 686-SSR :)
