Carothers and Guns

I love the Underwood 200 grain hard cast. What I use in all my 10mm bear guns.

I see you sighted in at 26 yards? Make sure you shoot that gun at say 5 feet, 10 feet, 15 feet 10 yards etc to make sure you're still on target. A lot of times when we are hiking in Glacier Park we are on trails where I cant see 5 feet in front of me. If I still have time to grab my gun due to a bear charge I want to make sure I can hit him close:)

These two boxes showed up at the same time - my preorder MagnaCut DEK1 with ECAM and a pair of Springfield Armory service grade Garands from the CMP, here with my IBM carbine, Remington-Rand 1911A1, and M4 bayonet. The CMP stocks actually match the ECAM pretty well...

Sig P320 X TEN 10mm w/ Eotech EFLEX 6 MOA red dot. View attachment 2231620View attachment 2231621Found a spot in the nearby mountains to put the new girl through her paces. The range was set up at 26 yards, shooting from table and rest. Ammo: Winchester 180 gr target load, Underwood 200 gr and 220 gr.

The Buffalo Bore would not cycle cleanly. I had loaded 10 rounds in a mag and manually cycled them. The first 6 hung up on each ejection. Needless to say, I did not fire them.

The Grizzly 200 gr didn’t get its day in court either. It appears to be uncoated lead and I didn’t want to risk the fouling.

Winchester: 30 rounds, comfortable recoil, on target but all over. I thought I had the Eotech sighted in at this point. Sighted w/ 3 to 5 shot groups and 1 MOA per click.

Underwood 200 gr hc ft : 30 rounds AWESOME !!! I switched between the 200 and 220, again shooting 3 to 5 round groups. The 200 was more accurate (for me) and a smidge more comfortable to shoot.

Underwood 220 gr : definitely felt the recoil but got it down to a 2.5 in group after 35 shots.

The X TEN was amazing to shoot ! The shape and texturing of the grip along w/ the dove tail lock the hand in. Trigger pull is smooth, short, and crisp ( for stock). These combined w/ the weight and balance allowed for very enjoyable shooting, even with the “hot stuff”.

After about 60 shots, I had one 220 gr hang up. I field cleaned the pistol nd it all smoothed back out. In the end, I was finally happy w/ the last 7 shots. Wish I would’ve had more time and more ammo. View attachment 2231651

Nice range ya got there. ;)

FWIW, issues with Buffalo Bore feeding/ejection and the X-Ten has been frequent feedback in threads on Sigtalk. A lot of people seem to be settling on the Underwood 200s as the round of choice for the X-Ten.

Do you prefer the 200 over the 220 ?

Great advice and thank you. I’m ordering more ammo today. Underwood is uncommon at local gun stores. I definitely don’t want to be caught with my pants down in Alaska, though. “Ummm… Mr. Bear, would you mind stopping right there ? I’m only comfortable shooting at 26 yards. “ 🤣🤣🤣

Yup. Beautiful spot. 👍🏼

I had read that but had to find out for myself. Underwood 200 grain is all it’s gonna use going forward.

I appreciate all the advice you and others have offered on the “bear gun” subject.

Yep, the Underwood 200gr is going 1250 fps and has 694 foot pounds energy. The 220gr is going 1200 fps and has 704 foot pounds. You're only giving up 10 foot pounds and the recoil is less which means more controllable shots. I have shot about 50 rounds of the 220 grain in both my Glocks and my S&W and didn't have any failures but I do read a lot of people that do have failures with the 220gr. To me the added recoil and chance of a failure is not worth the 10 more foot pounds of energy.

When I buy the 200gr I always buy at least $200 worth so I get the free shipping. I get their emails also and they send out a lot of discount codes.

Spot on ! It’s always a good feeling to find the ammo that can be relied on and has known performance. I just ordered another 8 boxes of 200 gr from Underwood.

I had ordered a kydex chest rig from GunfightersINC, as well. Unfortunately, the wrong holster shipped. I just got off the phone with them and the guy said, “ I will package up the correct holster and walk it over to shipping right now.” Great customer service from them .

Hadn’t heard of gunfightersinc before now and I do like the look of their chest rigs
They’re good chest rigs. Been using them for about 6 years now. Once you buy the first complete one then you can just buy different shells to fit other guns at cheaper prices. Have them to fit my Glock 40 10mm, Glock 19 9mm, S&W MP 10mm, S&W mtn revolver 44mag, Ruger Redhawks 454 casual and 45 colt.

No picture because the gun doesn't exist yet, but I ordered the final two components for my bolt gun build yesterday. Assuming the barrel is done near the initial estimate it should be on its way to the smith in mid-late November. I'll probably be carrying my fk1 or edc so you can use your imaginations. 😁

$400 for a grip module....seems a little steep to me, but that could be because I like the stock module.
Aluminum vs polymer. I think Sigs AXG grip mod for the small frame 320 is 350 ish, Sharps Bros 365 grip mods are up there too……just a lot of machining.

Expensive hobbies and niche items. After a while you get desensitized to stuff like that, kinda like knives 🤣

That being said I still can’t bring myself to pay the monies for RAL 8000 MP5 furniture and grip housings 🤣

I didn't realize it was aluminum. That makes more sense. I must be really tired.

My problem is I have too many "expensive hobbies and niche items" on my lists, so I can't afford to become desensitized to it. Gotta prioritize what I really want/need. Easier said than done, though. 😆
