I like the top hump of the handle but the distinct angle of the front section to the back is better in Ryan's.

I prefer the lines on the underneath of Ryan's.

Your butt could be interesting though. :D

How about S-curving the top of the handle? Following the guard curve down into the handle then back up to fill the hand?

Thanks Shawn!

Claudio I have to say you took care of my Butt issues! I have decided on the final handle design, thanks for all the input! I just secured the materials over the phone. I will update when it is all in hand. Should be the end of this week. Then the work begins

Haha Thanks Lorien. Baby Definitely Got Back!

Looks like fun. Have you thought about some Amboyna as another wood option?
Sorry I somehow missed your post Matt. I love Amboyna, but don't have any on hand. Thought about KOA but that has been played out a little IMO.

Hey Ryan

I DO have some Amboyna on hand if you want to go in that direction.....

Thanks again for following everyone...

Sorry for the delays, I am making sure I get it just right so I am getting a little practice in. I also have a few projects and orders that I am working on that are taking up most of my shop time.

Here is the final design, I want it to have the CAS look so I based most of the handle design on his version with a few personal preferences.

Looks great! If I might ask, being a novice on design and such, what's the function of that curve at the bottom front of the handle? Aid in chopping? Lock it into your grip better? And the flat at the top is an indexing aid, right?

Thanks everyone for the comments, Mark you CRACK me up!

Crimson, This knife won't be for chopping. If you are at a knife show and see a knife with a contoured handle like the ones on a Wheeler, Knight or Claudio (Many others out there) ask to pick it up. You will find out how comfortable they are. The only way I can describe it is the entire handle makes contact with the palm of your hand. It gives an amazing amount of control and is very hard to get right.

I was in the shop most of today and got a lot done on other projects, I had a little time so I bit the bullet. I didn't get any progress pics but it was pretty self explanatory.

  1. Cut of an appropriate size (1/2" x 1" x 2") nickel stock and square it up
  2. Dykem the face
  3. Mark the center line
  4. Scribe the start dimensions of the tang,
  5. Drill down the center line
  6. Attach Bruce Bump Custom File Guide
  7. File
  8. File
  9. File...

I apologize for the lack of photos, I will make sure to get more the rest of the way. I stopped here because this is where I tend to move to fast. I did have to shorten the guard height from the original a little bit so I could fit it between the screws on my Bump file guide.

I thought about using Stainless 416 stock that I ordered with the Nickel from Sheffield knife maker's Supply. When the box arrived via USPS there was a big hole in the side and the Stainless bar was missing... After filling out the USPS "Domestic or International Claim" form, Nickel it was.

Ryan, is this handle type an "open-source" design, or is there a particular maker whose permission must be sought?

Ugh. Sorry to hear that!
