Case Copperheads- pics and experience wanted

I ordered a yeller CV version yesterday, still waiting for the shipping notice email. I've been wanting a knife exactly like it for a while so I'm very excited about getting this one in hand. Basically I wanted a big version of the Peanut, larger even than the mini trapper and with a full clip, prefer a slipjoint, prefer a plain regular clip over the copperlock cut swedge clip, and why not wish for a pen blade while I'm at it. Especially after my disappointment over the recent GEC 74 Mustang run (I never saw one in stock anyway but I didn't care for the handle options or the drop point blade). So imagine my surprise when I got the notification email from Case that the Copperhead is the 2021 Vault knife! The Copperhead is pretty much made to order for me with the size, handle shape, and blades precisely as I'd wished for. Reading the other BF threads about the Copperhead only adds to my anticipation. Should look great sticking out of a belt holster, or feel good in the pocket, either way.

Anybody know what the handle choices will be on the single clip blade versions? I saw a preview of a Stainless single with black sycamore wood handles, but haven't seen any others. Does anybody else think a Copperhead CV single clip with chestnut bone covers might possibly be the perfect "gentleman's folder"?

Bermuda/green single clip blade would be sweet. Are these Vault knives going to be as hard to get as some of GEC's?

nope- that’s the only great thing about Case- generally if you want a new production knife you can find one.

Thanks good to know
Yep, I have two stocking dealers within a short drive of my house that still have barlows from 2019, so obtaining a Copperhead should be doable. I need a clip point to keep my wharncliffe company.

Probably not. I was able to get 2 nice barlows in 2019, including a CV sawcut brown bone that looks a lot like Appaloosa, no problem. I didn’t try to get a pocket hunter in 2020 but there didn’t seem to be a shortage of them.

I'll add that if there is a particular handle/blade combination you really like, don't wait too long. Case drops don't instantly evaporate like GEC, but I went looking for a CV sawcut Barlow last year and could not find one. I did not have any trouble finding other Barlows, but that one was sold out. That was a year after the release, so not a huge hurry, but if you wait a year you might have to settle for something else.

My copperhead order was supposed to be here today, but Fedex is apparently as messed up as the USPS. They shipped it 80 miles past my house to a little town where it sat for 16 hours before they moved it another 40 miles away. Probably be in Colorado tomorrow. Or maybe it will get here. Who knows? Fedex sure doesn't
First world problems :p

Now that I think about it I seem to remember that I ordered that CV sawcut Barlow early, like right before it was released. If it makes you feel any better, it came with a deep scratch across one bone cover and the main clip has some play when open. On the other hand I was watching for the GEC 74 drops and missed them all within minutes of the email notifications. So being able to order a CV copperhead right as it’s released with no scrambled factor is really nice. This is probably gonna be one of those patterns where I get more than one. The yeller delrin is just a solid start. Maybe the CV dark red bone will follow in my pocket in a couple months.

What questions do you have about the knife? Maybe I can help you out?

a few come to mind:
  • Any blade playin the joint?
  • Notice any blade rap?
  • Do you find the secondary “in the way” when you have the primary open? (Would you have preferred a single clip?)
  • Does the bolster actually sink the joint completely?
Just a few things on my mind...

Nope. Doesn't make me feel better at all. I want everybody's new knife to be perfect in every way :)
I ended up with a Case yellow cv and a bone stag stainless. The yellow one also had a small amount of play on the primary. The bone stag does not.

Fedex sez my Copperheads are out for delivery

for whatever reason one of my favorite parts of owning a slipjoint is the walk and talk fidgeting aspect.
I'm right there with you, Buddy.:thumbsup:
I've sent many a good knife down the road for poor Walk and Talk.

I've cycled the knife a few times and the action may be a little bit better. It is just a tad sluggish on the main blade, but only on the close. It is actually pretty good from open to half stop, with that satisfying "wobble" that Mike Latham likes so well.
