Case Copperheads- pics and experience wanted

I'm one of the odd ones out, I suppose, but I want my two blade Jack style knives to have the nail nicks on the same side.... which is why I really like my wharncliffe version of the copperhead. Pen is the primary blade, in front of the larger wharncliffe secondary. Both nicks on the same side. I dislike having to turn the knife 180 degrees in order to access the other nail nick. I haven't lately been accused of being normal, though.

interesting how some folks assign “primary” and “secondary” by the position of the blade with respect to the mark side. I always figured the larger blade was the master blade.

you’re not alone- there’s a lot of folks who like the nail nicks on the mark side. I just don’t like to have two nail nicks competing for real estate.

I usually "assume" the larger blade is the primary, as well. However, Case seems to have established a pattern of putting their "Case" stamp on the primary blade, and the model number on the secondary... at least in my observations. On this one, the "Case" tang stamp is on the front, smaller, pen blade, and the larger wharncliffe is behind it, with the model number stamped on the tang. Again, I just "assumed" that made the pen the main blade... I could very well be wrong, but it would just fly in the face of what Case normally does, tang stamp-wise.

The new versions aren't like that. The nail nicks are on opposite sides. I agree with you - I prefer them on the same side, but its not a deal breaker for me.

I'm pretty excited for this one, I'm sure I'll get the Bermuda green, and probably one of the CV ones. I really like the Black Sycamore covers, and the single blade is nice, but I may opt for the Copperlock in Black Sycamore instead. I'll have to see what my local dealer gets in.

Initial thoughts:
All have decent walk and talk.

Sufficient snap open and closed without being difficult about it, which I prefer.

The kirinite has some blade play on the primary. Its not horrible and I've seen similar blade play on many, many new Cases, so par for the course. All other blades are tight with no play.

Backsprings are proud on all three secondaries when open. Primary backsprings flush on Yellow and Kirinite when open, proud on the wharncliffe.

Yellow has decent blade centering. Not so much on the other two. No rub that I can see.

The Kirinite is my first Case acrylic. It is stunning. Especially in the sunlight. Despite taking a gazillion pics, I could not adequately capture just how pretty this knife is.

I really like the sawcut Caribbean blue bone on the wharncliffe. I like the way it feels in hand. It also looks better in person. Its kind of a bright color

Other than the proud secondary spring, the yellow is almost perfect. Its become an immediate user.

I will say, I'm not as particular as a lot folks here. The blade play disappoints me a little, but things like blade centering was never on my radar before discovering BF. As long as its not hitting the liner, I'm good to go. So FWIW, YMMV, etc.

I tried, but I just couldn't get into this pattern, and I found something more intriguing to my tastes. If I ever try another Case, I think it will have to be something older. I wish I liked it better, but I couldn't.

If everybody liked the same thing this would be a pretty boring forum. I'm not a fan of the swayback, but lots and lots of inmates here love it. Variety is spice of life and all that rot :D

My yellow delrin Copperhead arrived today.....

If I rate it by my standards it gets an 85%.... I don't care that the springs are high at open, don't care that there is a .004 gap between a liner and spring, don't care that it arrived dull and with a ragged edge.....

I did deduct for the main blade being up against the liner for the last inch of it's length.... Tomorrow I'll crink it and if I don't break it, all will be well......

I sharpened the blades and got them nice and sharp..... It has nice walk and talk..... Other than the blade/liner issue It's decent knife..... If you are inclined to be fussy, you might want to examine it prior to purchasing......

Thanks for the great photos and write up. I really like the looks of that blue pearl. I may have to bite (see what I did there?)

I have sent one knife to Case for warranty repair. It was a Mini Copperlock. When closing, the blade hit the liner long before the blade was closed and scraped all the way down. Case sent me a mailing label and when I got it back it was fixed. Just in case you'd rather let them do it. If they break they bought it.

If you are inclined to be fussy, you might want to examine it prior to purchasing......

I've had pretty good luck buying Case knives, but I agree with this.

mbkr mbkr and HEMI 49 HEMI 49 , great reviews, great pictures.

particularly of interest is the secondary on mbkr’s yellow Synthetic has a particularly high spring when open. I could stub my toe on that. Looks like they stamped the back of the tangs a little long... eesh.

I’m still tempted to get one but it does take some of the shine off the idea.

I almost want to say its not as bad as it looks in the photo, but...its there. Be nice if it was flush, but in all honesty I doubt I'll ever notice it in use. Interesting that all three secondary blades were like that.

so for a spring to be flush closed and open the front and back of the tang has to be equidistant from the pivot hole. If I had to guess I would say the pattern die for the secondary features a pivot hole that isn’t centered. That might drive me to get the single blade version...
