Case Tony Bose Collabs pic and discussion thread.

Anyone happen to know details about the Damascus used on the Collabs? Looks like Devin Thomas "raindrop" Damascus to me, but I don’t remember ever seeing definitive info on this.

Edit: In particular, I’m wondering if the Damascus on the Collabs is carbon or stainless? Or, did it change over time?

dennishy,

been studying your chart some more. Is there room to add a column for closed length? That would be interesting and useful info.

Super chart. 👍

I think that's doable! Sorry - work and life has been on the busier trend lately. I had hoped to put together some images (compiled from this thread) to add some visual context as well but that project is also still in progress. By way of apology, here's a random photo while folks wait :)

edit for additional info:

Most sourced from earlier pages in this thread, compiled for convenience for anyone who stumbles upon this thread in the future

Mostly Accurate:
- Collaboration knives are cut by Wire EDM
- The shields are pinned (after 1999? or perhaps after 2000? see quote below)
- Most have bushings (see quote below)
Tony Bose said:

The collaboration knives are much higher quality and limited numbers. They are deep cryo heat treated ATS34 and all stainless frames and bolsters with pined on shields after the 2nd year. Most of them have a bushing in the pivot and they are made to be work horses. I know several people that carry and use them. They will preform. All of these are made in the proto shop by 3 men. I have went there and helped them get started on the lockback whittler. All the parts are EDM wire cut from prototypes that I make so what they end up with is very close to what I send them. Try one, you'll like it.
- Stainless Steel (either ATS-34 or 154-CM) frame and bolsters
- Milled liners
- Shields are deliberately proud on bone covers (quote to be sourced)
- Shields are ground flush on abalone and ebony wood. Pins are nickel silver (are shields nickel silver as well?)
- Most years seem to have between 1000-1100 made, though I'm not sure if this includes Damascus counts. 1000 total for the premium stockman exclusive of the damascus in 2018
The Case® Bose Premium Stockman family carries five different handle styles – Brown Bone, Ebony Wood, BoneStag®, Chestnut, and Abalone – making a combined production of 1,000 complete knives. - Case Knives Blog
- 950 Total Locking Lanny's Clip in 2020
THE INSPIRATION FOR THE LANNY’S CLIP came from a knife Tony made for a friend who needed a “workhorse” of a knife with a heavy blade. Adding a locking Clip blade gives this knife the feel of a fixed blade without sacrificing the convenience of pocket carrying. These knives are limited to 950 total pieces, so when they are available you will want to be sure to grab yours fast! - Case Knife Blog - Locking Lanny's

Needs more research - may not be accurate!
- Covers have included: Brown Bone, Antique Bone, Chestnut Bone, Ebony Wood, Bonestag, Abalone (/Mother of Pearl???), Black Canvas Laminate, Natural Burlap Micarta, Burnt Stag
- Damascus models typically seem to have 100 made (e.g. 2005 Lockback Whittler)
- Abalone seems to average 100 made (2003 Dogleg Jack)
- Mother of Pearl at least ran for the Cattle Knife with 125 units made? is this the same as abalone?? this is becoming my white whale please send help
- Black Canvas Laminate is not used every year (e.g. HTT Trapper, Locking Lanny's do have Black Canvas Laminate)
- There is a version of the 2022 Old Dog available in Natural Burlap Micarta which, if you've guessed, doesn't seem to be available with any rhyme or reason.
- Usually bone covers are in the ~500-600 (split between chestnut, brown, antique), Ebony is ~200, ~100-200 Stag (has burnt stag been offered in the same year as bone stag?), ~100 Abalone

Here's the list with closed lengths. I figure weight varies by cover material and that's ... been challenging.

I had hoped I could find some magazine ad scans of each year if I tried hard enough but it's been hard trying to find how many of each cover was made. For now I took the easy way out and looked at long out-of-stock listings (and even old bladeforums listings) to finish the closed lengths (blade lengths became a headache). Interestingly, the more I look the more questions I end up with. For example - some years, like the 2015 cattle knife, had mother of pearl as a cover option? There's also little easily searchable detail about a lot of the early knives so I figure I'll go digging through ancient posts here on the forums next.

also picture:

The Lanny's Clip was really what caught my attention at first - an iconic, arresting, pattern that many makers today pay homage to. Naming the knife for his friend is a cool part of the story too and I'm real pleased to have one.

I wonder if its any different fro the Damascus on 'regular' case knives...I am much more into the 154-CM versions, Tony Bose was very impressed with that steel.

Really like this one. I've got a brown bone and an ebony, this one might be next on the list.
I was kind of on the fence about the bone stag. But it’s easily my favorite between this and the regular bone. FYI, I fgot mine pretty cheap at Case Outlet, but they were running a bit low on stock.

Per:Shields are ground flush on abalone and ebony wood. Pins are nickel silver (are shields nickel silver as well?”

Case customer service said ebony covers are sanded flat unlike other covers, thus they use nickel silver pins and shields for knives with ebony. Nickel silver is softer than steel.

I think the Wilfred has a micarta or G10 rear spacer.

The Damascus steel knives are not considered regular production but are only made the same year of regular production. I think they are dealer specials.
