CBM's - Customized Benchmade's

Hey Keyman, those scales look great, the more I look at them the more I recognize the skill it takes to make them, It's hard enough to do when one side is completely flat, but the mini grip has liners that fit into the scales, they don't just slap right on, so your milling has to be spot on otherwise any mistake will show, especially at the points where there is jimping. Not to mention that you get the taper of the scales perfect each time. :D

Have you posted videos or a step by step of how you make your scales? That would be very interesting and informative to see.

I have to admit it was quite a lot of work over the past three days pretty much non stop. I just have very simple hand tools and a dremel. Quite a lot of sanding and threading standoffs. I will be doing one or two more of my personal knives, but I will have to wait a while to rest up. Hand and back took some punishment.

You may notice I did use a different technique for fitting the mini-griptilian liners in the scales. The metal liners sit in the G-10 (black) liners. I simple cut out the shape in G-10 using the liner as a template. The axis lock recess is in another G-10 liner (orange) along with very minimal inletting of the linen micarta scale. This particular approach reduces the need for extensive milling and keep the metal liners sitting square in the scales. I thought it was a pretty novel idea and I was apprehensive about milling out the liner shape one slab of handle material. Pretty stoked it all worked out.

That's an awesome Idea, I was typing up my previous post at about the same time you posted, and I was contemplating how much work the milling takes, when the liners are embedded into the scales. The way you worked around it is brilliant. I like the way your scales turned out.

Also, It does take a lot out of you, especially when your using hand tools and a dremel. what gets me after a while is filing. my arm feels like I jumped off a 3rd story and landed right on it. :(

Just once you get the g-10 cut for the liner and the other for the omega spring recess, you have to glue the lines to the scales aligned just about perfectly. I drilled alignment holes in the waste space of the liners and used pins (old drill bits) to hold the alignment while the glue sets up.

Thanks for the complements! Maybe this way will help other who face the challenge is mini-grip scales.

Here's my first go at it. I made some scales out of Rosewood for my mini barrage.

Elisabeth ;)

That material makes it look like a real knife. Very elegant and touch of traditional for a modern design. Well done!

Well, here are my prizes, maybe not as fancy as a lot of the other knives here, but I like them!

Benchmade Griptilian Black Sheepsfoot plain (550BKHGOD) with Wilkins Aircraft Grey and Black G10 Scales with a Black Hardcoat Aluminum Spacer.

Benchmade Mini Griptilian... somewhat of a Frankenstein, this is actually a Black Tanto plain (557BKSN) (note the black axis lock) with the blade from a Black drop point plain (556BKSN) because I prefer the look of that blade on this, with Wilkins Hardcoat Black Aluminum Scales a Blood Red Aluminum Spacer.

I like both of them!

Waved and double edged.

Thank you for the compliments Austonh, sogflash and Elite_KG.
Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that I'm allergic to Rosewood :(

Great work Keyman, Deathofallthings, Elite_KG and Professor. Holo07, those are sweet as well. Did you make them?
