Bracelet Fighting, anyone?

Many years ago I read an issue of Sports Illustrated where some wrestling coach believed that his roots went back to the Nuba tribe in Africa. The article went on to describe the different martial arts traditions of the Nuba which included something called "Bracelet Fighting."

I did a little research and found some photos of the Nuba in an old National Geographic. The bracelets were a series of brass rings starting at the wrist and going down the forearm. The photo was blurry, but the bracelets looked like they were fastened to the forearms with leather. Anyway the article went on to describe these "boxing" type contests with the sound of skulls cracking in the background.

We've all heard of sap gloves, and palm saps and the like, how come no one has ever come up with "forearm saps" a la Nuba?

I'm picturing something in adjustable nylon webbing with bracelets strategically wrapping the wrist going down to maybe 1.5" to 2.5" before the elbow.

The bracelets could be non-ferrous Ti or Aluminium or even polycarbonate or some other super plastic.

The whole rig could easily be concealed under long sleeves and could pass as a forearm brace (which it is technically) under curious eyes (It's that dang ol' carpal tunnel syndrome again!)

This rig could give the much underrated forearm blows ( e.g. "clothesline", outside edge strike aka "smash") some added authority as well as provide some added anti-knife slash protection to our peace officers.

I've taken a child's soccer shinguard & wrapped it up w/ an Ace bandage on the forearm when playing football. Lovely forearm smashes that don't hurt (you).
Add some pointy/hard bits on it & you've got something. Sounds like an old biker trick that I've heard before.

Fear the man who has a cast on his arm!

All of the various leather gauntlets with spikes, etc., that you would find on the Heavy Metal dudes like Motley Crue come to mind.

Do you know that spiked arm and wristbands are illegal in some places? Massachusetts, for example. They are considered "Martial Arts Weapons."

What a sick world.

Dude,

I'm amazed that anything is legal in Canada. I mean, you can still hunt in Canada, but that takes a high power firearm to hunt most big game up there. And those calibers are anywhere from two to three times as powerful, in some cases, maybe four times more powerful than an "Assault Rifle" round...yet one is banned, the other is not. Freaky world.

Coming soon, to a neighborhood near you.

Hello All,
The posters to this forum all appear to be realists.
I have not seen the plastic knives mentioned here.
I sometimes carry the Lansky plastic knife hidden in my necktie when other weapons are not feasible.
I think that this little plastic knife would work very well in an emergency.
What do the rest of you think ?.
Regards and keep well.

Cold Steel makes 2 zytel weapons: the CAT Tanto and the Delta Dart. Laci Szabo and Fred Perrin also offer G10 versions of most(maybe all) of their models. The only reason I would carry one, is if I had to go somewhere I knew I would be searched. A flat, neck knife sized, non-metallic blade could be easily stored inside a shoe. In an emergency anything is better than nothing. With determination you could make it work.

The laws in Canada are ridiculous. I can't believe the V-gar belt is illegal. I'm telling you man, tactical toothpics is gonna be the way of the future for law-abiding citizens.

I could go on for days on how stupid certain things are.

The Canadian Solicitor General is in control of books, magazines and other publications. Weapons describing violence or the weapons of violence are banned in Canada. Isn't that a fine thing? That is simply insane. Certain countries have the audacity to call themselves' "free," and they ban books because they know what is good for you. I know they cannot be sold in Canada, I don't know the laws on possession, however.

So, in light of that, I can't be surprised, can I?

I saved a picture of a World War Two poster and I have it on the desktop of my computer to remind me of the power of knowledge above everything else. It shows a book burning...and;

BOOKS CANNOT BE KILLED BY FIRE
People die, but books never die. No man and no force can put thought in a concentration camp forever. No man and no force can take from the world the books that embody man's eternal fight against tyranny. In this war, we know books are weapons.

So, who has prevailed? The Internet has negated the Canadian Government in a very real way. Until they find a way to make every Canadian have an ISP that has a firewall to prevent entry into sources of information like this.

Hello All,
Don, the theme "Books cannot be killed by fire" has been quite well covered by Ray Bradbury in his book "Fahrenheit 451".
This attitude of "Mother knows best" used to be quite prevalent in South Africa some years back.
Regards and keep well.

Of course there is the recent Canadian court decision that found that the possession of child porn is OK here. Go figure.

I can also get any Paladin Press book I can think of. What books describing "violence or the weapons of violence" are banned by the Govt? Canada Customs just lost a major Court case regarding their seizure of some "offensive" (pornographic) material. The onus is now back on the Govt. to Prove that the material is offensive.

As for guns, I can have an AR-15 with a 5 rd. mag, but if I insert a 10 rd mag, I'm instantly a criminal committing an indictable offense.

You can own a Glock 22, but not a Glock 23. A Commander length 1911 is fine, but a S&W model 10 with a 4" bbl is Prohibited. Govt. boneheads!

Brothers & Sisters of Steel,
It took some smart minds to create "Smart Weapons". It took a bunch of pacifist Buddhist priests to defeat armed foes.
It will take a way of words to win against the way of tyranny.
Historically it was the rich and powerful whom recognized that for the common man to be educated or 'book smart' was to empower that individual. Slavery, tyranny, oppression and their ilk are defeated by free men; be that freedom of mind and spirit alone.
Our northern cousins know well how to wield a hockey stick. Pehaps Canadians could contest, (accent on the second syllable), publishing the reporting of contact sports reports under the auspices of their media violating the law!
The law is not infallible. It is the application by men which creates the disparity.
My apology for departing a bit from the forum genre.
As to "Cloak & Dagger" items, consider this:
As either a defensive or offensive weapon any object may be employed. A billiard cue may become a staff, a crozier, a spear, a brace, a splint, a crutch and more.
The opportunity to create an applicable deviation from the "norm" for any given object is limitless.
If you check your references you'll find similar discoveries. (What? You've NEVER used a screwdriver as a: prybar, electrical shorting device, marshmallow skewer, bug impaler, knife and back scratcher? )
Needless to say, ahem, if you NEED to create a tool, then by all means, make the tool a useful one. Whom would have thought of a multi-plier if there was no need for one?
Gimbled drink holders. Satellite imaging?
Tri-nitro-toluene. (Thank you Dr. Nobel.)
The genre of spycraft is more akin to the clandestine knowledge APPLIED then it is in actuality.
So the next time your spouse says "How'd you do that"...Remember, well!

Steve,

As per Peder Lund of Paladin Press, there were quite a few of the books he published that were banned in Canada. The whole "How to Kill" series by John Minnery, for example.

Was that restriction on what the Canadian Solicitor General deemed "Seditious Literature" lifted? I don't know, I can't even keep up with the relatively small State that I live in and the 100 plus new laws the State Legislature passes here every year.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse!

Well, they should afford that luxury of "Justice" to the Citizen when it comes time for a lawsuit when someone was arrested for having a pocketknife in their pocket. You should be able to sue the State, Local or Federal Government for a Civil Rights Violation (you can in some cases but try convincing them your rights were violated because you could not carry the pocketknife of your own choosing). The only thing Administrators and "Bean Counters" understand is a lack of beans, and the only way to hit them and make them fall into line is to sue their ass and take their beans.

We are getting way far afield here though.

As for Child Porn being OK up there, it does not surprise me at all. The way Socialists do things is, the norms in society, like the common, basic right to Self-defense and the weapons to make that defense a success are torn down along with "family values" and in their place are firmly planted a host of things...like perversity. In that way, they turn a society upside down and in a few generations, they will have the sort of Voter they want.

Yes, something like owning a gun becomes a perversity, and they twist Freud into a pretzel to prove something that does not exist, yet allow real perversities to continue.

The People in America have a wake up call coming, when the Pedophile Lobby gains some legitimacy.

Like I said, that is all pretty far from the topic at hand.

if I were to 'define' a neck knife it woudl be the la griffe... It i the lightest most practical, comfortabla nd solid thing I hae ever carried. That frenchman rocks.. I have two of em.

The Sikhs had/have special bracelets where one removes the outer shell to reveal spikes.
Saw one for about $200 USD on a Canadian site.

As far as covert weapons go, one of my favorites is the Valois belt buckle knife. It offers two major advantages over others like the Bowen: the belt stays closed when the knife is withdrawn & an actual kydex sheath is built into the belt -- the blade does not simply sit between layers of leather with no protection for the stitching or for you. Here's a pic of mine, a Vantage 1 model:

I don't think it's mentioned on the Valois site but the belts are available in a variety of material, from webbing and plain leather to premium leathers such as alligator & ostrich.
