Cold Steel Strider rip-0ff

We aren't in disagreement, George. This whole fiasco has proven to me that I am well advised to stick to the manufacturers I have always leaned towards, Spyderco, Kershaw, CRK, and Emerson.

I know that, to a lot of people on this forum, the honesty and integrity of the manufacturer/knifemaker doesn't necessarily outweigh how their product performs. To me it does! My grandfather was the one who got me interested in knives, when I was very young boy. He believed very strongly in honesty and integrity, as did most of his generation and his fellow WWII Vets. To me, those characteristics (honesty and integrity) go hand in hand with my hobby.

Regards,
3G

i agree i also was taught honesty is the best policy but it boiles down to mick striders claims if he started out just as a knife maker with out the claims his knives would be judged on that merit but when he claimed he was a combat vet in most military circles they support their own i havent been in the military for 20 years but every once in a while ill have a marine buy me a beer when he finds out that i was a corpsman to military people what he did is almost as bad as cowardice under fire he attacked a guy that is the real deal only to boost his buisness all the while being a phoney and that is whats almost un forgiveable if he was to appologise in print in a magazine like blade or tactical knives everybody would say he appologised ok you admit your mistakes lets be friends.

What kills me about Striders is that Paul Bos stamps all of his knives very nicely. If you look at most Striders, Paul Bos's stamp is almost always much better done than the knife. When I see this, I see Paul Bos taking a lot of pride in doing what he is doing, heat treating. When I see the Strider logo next to it half printed, selling the things for $300+ I see Strider laughing at their customers...."Ha, Ha, you frickin' moron. You bought this knife from us and we can't even get our stamp straight. We're not proud of the work we put into our knives, Hell, even the heat treat guy can do better than us!"
Is that the kind of fool you want to be taken for?

i noticed that i had a strider the quality didnt empress me much thats why i sold it. the reason i mentioned chris reeves his quality does empress me a lot plus the green berets picked his knife as a whole to be supplyed by the military thats impressive and speakes valumes in my book.

Dont you all just have to admire the sheer sociopathic genius of LT, putting that line in about Strider, knowing all the publicity it would get for his knives on this forum and others?

I mean if he is going to be the leper of the knife world why not go all the way, he knows that no matter how much people talk down about him, you are spreading the word about his new products , posting links and giving him free advertising.

People , if exposed to his products will like what he has, the new stuff is really cheap, and that fits right into the market he is targeting and this thread is delivering to.

What a genius!

well t think it has a lot to do with selling practices strider lied and cold steel advertized badly but strider did to someone what is now happenning to him what goes around comes around. all he can do is suck it up and take it like a man.

I'm not surprised at Cold Steel.

They can't just outsource a cheap a$$ carbon copy of a knife, instead they also need to dump crap on the person they ripped off. Pretty low Mr. Thompson. :thumbdn:

I am getting a bad feeling about this. Mick Strider's friends are neither falsifying his letter, nor confirming it. Their careful choice of words makes me wonder and still the versions of "the truth" still go from "medals, wounded in combat" over "he's been a ranger, but he never said he was in combat" to "he has never been an operator at all".

I'm disappointed. I'm not talking about the carjacking - that's Mick Strider's very own business. Hell, there are hundreds of knifemakers and I have no idea who was in prison and who wasn't - I don't ask and I don't care!
But there are many knifemakers who have to rely on their talent alone without telling false war-stories, pretending to be someone they are not.

Why am I disappointed without knowing the real truth yet? Because Michelle says Mick Strider never claimed to be a combat veteran - but there are hundreds of quotes that speak a different language. I'm in a loss of words. Disappointing is the only word that pops up in my mind right now.

I'm thinking about many of his fans who have been betrayed. They have a high moral standard, they worshiped Strider as a hero and whenever someone asked "Why Strider?" their answer was "Because the knife was made by an honorable man, who served his country while risking his life. He should know how a combat knife is supposed to be."

I am 50 years old and know all about starting out in the wrong direction. Yes, some people do make mistakes when they are young, I can vouch for that.
I can also vouch that some people when smacked in the face with reality, do turn their lives around, admit their mistakes and move on.

I am damn proud to call Mick Strider my friend. He sure as hell dont need me to stick up for him but I'll stand shoulder to shoulder with him anywhere.

Most of the mindless drivel in this thread I won't even bother to diginify with a reply, but I will address this.

Paul Bos doesn't stamp blades nor does he etch his logo on them. That's up to the knifemaker to do if he chooses to.

Many knifemakers put the Bos logo on their blades to let their customers know that it was heat treated by Bos, as his name is well known in the knife world.

How do I know this? Because Mr. Bos heat treats the knives that I make as well as most of the ones that my friends make.

As to the original title of this thread, it was a dirty thing for LT to do. Making a blatant copy of a Strider knife and then taking a shot at Mick in the ad.

Lynn Thompson talks out both sides of his ass. He does a big article on how much kerambits suck and then next thing you know, BAM he makes a kerambit.

People keep talking about Mick being a poser and all that. Let me relate a little story to you. Mick called me one day and told me that he was going to be at the Best Ranger Competition at Fort Benning and asked if I wanted to drive over to hang out. I head over there and get to meet some of the guys that he actually served. We were also given a tour of the headquarters building and invited to a dinner.

If Mick was such a poser, do you really think he would have treated that way by the very soldiers that he was "posing" to be?

You can debate all you want to about who came up with a clip point tanto first but I'll bet that none of us were alive when the first one was done. The one thing you can't debate is the "GI tanto" by Cold Steal is a direct copy of the Strider BT.

Well, except for the cordwrap............he stole that from someone else.:jerkit:

I really, really really, don't like the Cold Steel interpretation. Can't figure how I could make it work in my collection.

The first rule of marketing is any exposure is bettter than none.

It doesn't take an MBA in marketing to see who is going to lap this up and who is going to walk away.

There is a saying: if you do it for the right reason, you will end up doing it for the wrong reason.

There is always a price!

Shortcuts and grey marketing frequently end up being very expensive.

I have a Sog Tanto that is excellent I knew at the time it was not made in USA. Happy. Had (stolen) an Echo by Kershaw made in China.

I return to good brands, Buck, Sog, Kershaw time and time again because they have put a great deal of effort to make knives that are ergonomic and a pleasure to use. There is a bit of bling but only to enhance enjoyment.

Doooooc.... and others. Go read my sentance again. Come on guys. You are thinking narrow. You have all heard of privatised companies... Blackwater is well known... there are a zillion others out there that aren't well known.... there is an estimated 20,000 private contractors working the GWOT right now.

You know, I hope I burned some calories typing in this thread, because I don't think I've accomplished much else.

And just for the record, I don't worship mortal beings and my only hero is my dog that died last year. But I do recognize when someone is getting unfairly smeared and I get tired of watching the whole "tale" get warped and blown out of proportion exponentially every time it gets told.

We have hit our traditional 10 pages of BS that is commensurate with any thread in this forum that has Mick's name attached to it... in fact we have exceed our traditional 10 pages... and in record time! Well done everyone. It would be intersting to hold each and every one of us (myself included) up to the level of horrible scrutiny that these guys have been, and see how well we fare. I wonder how we would all feel having our privacy, our past, our mistakes, our friends, relatives and family pillaged and exploited this way. I bet most of us would not deal with it well.

Why does Mick have so many military friends? Like, high level ones? Why can he count Green Beret Team Seargents and everyone inbetween as his Pals? Why is he invited to the Best of Ranger Competition every year? Why isnt he considered a leper by the Military factions? Have you ever wondered? Do you people really think you know more than our Military does about Mick Strider? And yet the NSNs keep accumulating... Hey! I know! Maybe, just perhaps maybe, do you think that there is something there that you just don't know about?

Then there is the knife industry. Hmmmmm.... lets look at the knife makers that consider Mick a friend... a Pal...and have a great deal of respect for him - the late Rob Simonich, Tom Mayo, Ken Onion, Jerry Hossom, Kit Carson, Bill Harsey.... I could go on a page worth.

Now you tell me how many in this industry hold any kind of esteem for Lynn Thompson.

That's what I thought.

I think I've burned enough calories for now.

Thanks everyone for keeping this thread probably the most civil any thread on this topic has ever been. If nothing else, that right there is cool beans.

I said I was done but just cannot help but say.... excellent post Michelle, again.

My question remains unanswered, but I give up, it's making me tired and I need my attention elsewhere.
I can let the past be the past. Faked military career or not, even that is in the past.
What's not in the past is LT using his customers for his personal joke about a knifemaker he doesn't like. No matter what you think about Strider, this is just silly.
I mean, he propably hates the design with it's cord wrapped handle, so he uses it as a parody - which pulls everyone into his joke who buys this "GI tanto".
