Concerns re: ssbood (David)?

RevDevil...sage advice! We are trying to address his behaviors in legal...(even ethical) ways.

UPDATE: I've come to a roadblock with the police report. The investigating officer called and indicated that I would need more specific information about David Doss that ties him to Roanoke (e.g. address, telephone #). The info I have on him is a result of a google search. This is not good enough.

Has anyone made contact with him by phone? Has anyone shipped knives to ssblood and have a viable address?

Thanks,
Jack

Hmm you MIGHT be able to get his personal info from Paypal. I'm not sure how you could go about this but if the police were willing they could get a warrant for his info. Maybe try printing this thread and showing it to your local PD so they can see how many people are involved.

Hopefully they are taking this seriously/

Ask the person that sold to David last, to make a phone call to the RPD. Provide him with the name of the investigating officer and the phone number. This would be the safest way and everyone is covered.

Dan you seem misinformed for quite some time PP now charges the fee itself to you if you use PP gift. It is no longer free.

Seems I got screwed too. I'm out $45 which isn't a lot compared to others. But lesson learned I won't use PP gift anymore.

The seller didn't request additional fees but you sent it as a gift anyway. You cheated Paypal out of their money and now you are going to call Paypal to see if they will help you get your money back. Wow, unbelievable. Even if he did want you to add 3% that is only $5.55. Sorry, I have no sympathy for people using the gift option. You should know better.

don't they only charge a fee if it is from a credit card? if you have a PP balance or funded from a bank account, it should still be free.

Sux that so many of you are having issues. Best of luck to you all.

It's DapperDan and I am not misinformed.

thank you BF Mods & every members involved helping with this situation. I'm $250 + $225 = $475.00 in the hole.

I've just escalated Paypal dispute to claim.

I don't know what BF's stance is on this, but they have access to the IP address he used when replying to or starting specific threads [Edit: and PMs as well]. While they might not be willing to pass this info on to a member (I wouldn't), they might be willing to voluntarily provide that info to the Roanoke PD - especially a specific detective handling the case. An IP will give the PD a specific location from where he conducted the scams and is, IMHO, better than a phone number (proliferation of cells) or address. it shows where he physically was when he broke the law.

Anyway, just a thought and BF might not be willing to get involved to that extent. Still, you could ask. Worst that could happen is that it still isn't enough for the PD or BF might turn you down. Either way, nothing lost by asking.

Best of luck. :)

IP is not necessarily that accurate on location.

Yeah, I'm quite familiar with the pros and cons of using IPs to determine location. I'm an admin at a sports forum as big as this one, so lots of experience with such matters. ;) But just as it is not necessarily that accurate, it can be (and most often is) accurate enough to locate to a city which is the issue here [Edit: poster said PD needed info that "ties him to Roanoke"]. Of course, if this guy is knowledgeable about such things he could have manipulated the IP. I doubt that he is (most folks aren't) and if a check of the IP comes back to Roanoke, then the PD has what they are looking for. Maybe not enough to use as evidence, but enough to tell them that he is within their scope and they can pursue the alleged illegality. And if it comes back to the Philippines or such, then you know that the IP is useless in this case. A simple IP check could tell you whether it would be helpful or not.

But I wouldn't blame BF if they didn't want to get involved to that extent without a subpoena. I've passed along similar info to legal agencies on more than one occasion without a subpoena and felt comfortable doing so [Edit: in fact, our site rules state that we will cooperate with legal agencies]. Would never give it to a member. Each site has to make their own decisions about what works and does not work for them. But I felt it worth mentioning in this thread as a possible additional course of action. You guys, of course, will handle it as you see fit. :)

Add $275 from me for a working total of $1185. BTW, I would think that IP info would add to the police report even if it was not dispositive in and of itself.

And just for the record, I don't think this is about the amount $475 or $185- it's about wide spread theft on the forum. That a member could make $1200 in two days deceit. There needs to be repercussions.

Well put.

Although, I don't think there is really much else the Mods can do, aside from the banning of Paypal gifting.

$1185 + my $135 = $1320

You know, I'd still be hopeful if it wasn't for his email account disappearing.

I am no longer hopeful but for some reason, I still run to the mailbox and check when I get home every day.

Re: BF "banning pp gifting", I think this is irrelevant to the act committed by ssblood. Many buyers in this case did not use the gift option. That said, this is a lesson for me to never use the gift option on purchased goods again.

While this guy lives in the mountains of SW VA (yeah, it can get real backwards real quick around here), I wasn't going to go in kicking down doors with guns blazing. Once I found out he lives in Roanoke County, I offered via email last night to contact a close friend of mine who is one of the Captains on the Roanoke County PD. I've only known the guy for over 50 years, so....

My offer to make a phone call still stands.

Spx thanks for your good intention. I email the detective the full header to an email from ssblood. The detective said that he may be able to extract identifying info from that. I also emailed him a link to this thread...to expose the gravity of the scam. The officer seemed genuine enough but was forward w explaining the department's fiscal limitations in requesting subpoenas for information. Some BF members have stepped up and offered to provide ssblood's address directly to the officer.

For me, the sourness of this incident is offset an overwhelming sense of support and kinship from you all here. I am appreciative of this.

Much appreciated, but since the last person who sold to him is contacting the Roanoke PD to share his shipping address, I'm hopeful the detective on the case will be able to make contact and 'resolve' things. We'll see...
