This is an interesting read from NYT, but I dunno if you need a subscription or what to be able to open the link:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/06/10/world/coronavirus-history.html?action=click&module=Top Stories&pgtype=Homepage.

Per Eric I put a dot at the end of the link to hack it for none subscribers but I just dunno if this works or what.
Comparing 'all-cause mortalities' to previous years gives us an idea of just how much death an event is causing.

Just an FYI, the all-cause mortality figures for the whole USA for each of the weeks in the past 3 months shows a significant spike above the Covid-19 deaths. This, despite the shutdowns and a significant reduction in traffic and thus, traffic accidents (which usually accounts for a decent % of the total) in the initial 6-8 weeks of the shutdowns.

In theory, the widespread shutdowns also resulted in fewer people exerting themselves and suffering cardiac arrest while working out or working hard etc.

What's causing that excess mortality? We don't know. Some of it could be from lay off related stress. Perhaps things like PEs from sitting at home for extended periods. Perhaps some deaths from people being reticent about going to the hospital during a pandemic etc.

How many of those excess deaths that weren't counted in the Covid-19 numbers might in fact have been due to Covid-19? When NY was getting hit hardest, EMS calls to homes for cardiac arrests and calls reporting code blue patients (cardiac or respiratory arrest) spiked significantly. Many weren't tested after-the-fact.

Ugh. The Hokey-Pokey school of medical advice. Between the WHO and the CDC continually putting out 'statements' and advice, only to recant it later, is there any wonder why people aren't paying heed to their advice?

Their backflips do not do anything for public confidence in a time of high anxiety.

They would be better to just admit it's all new and they don't know what is going on yet instead of giving dangerous contradictory advise that puts the public at risk.

They are the highest public health authority the world has and the world has all but lost faith in their work.

Don't wear a mask - they don't help ... WEAR A MASK!

I personally feel that wearing a mask can help both the person wearing it and others around the wearer, depending on who is sick.

Anyone following the recent rapid flip flopping by the WHO on Covid advise?

Well what do ya expect when senile rockers try to give us their medical opinions? Frankly, at their age I'm surprised they still remember the lyrics to "Pinball Wizard." They should really stick to music and limit their medical advice to suggested fiber supplements...

If anyone in the capacity of an expert epidemiologist ever advises you not to wear a mask during a pandemic, then run away from that so-called expuhrt as fast as possible!

I am no epidemiologist but I watch a lot of older movies! Even in the flicks when the story is trying to depict some historical period, be it real like it happened or make belief, you will often note that people are covering their effing mouths! Whether by using their head scarf in case of women or neck scarfs in case of gentlemen, as soon as they cough, they reach for the cover or a handkerchief!

Cover the mouth and the nose, it’s good for ya!

At this point, I’d rather take advise from Townshend and Daltrey.
Hell, I’d trust Ozzy or Keith Richards more than the CDC or WHO at this point.

Sometimes it’s just the headlines people are reading. Sometimes the media misinterpret or state things out of context.
When we were being told not to wear masks it was because there was a shortage of masks and they needed the supply to go to the front line. They were recommending face coverings but N95 (and similar) weren’t necessary for the public, especially if social distancing was being practiced.
When the WHO rep said asymptomatic spread was “very rare” she was speaking to the results of a few small studies that had been done. They don’t have good numbers on asymptomatic spread because asymptomatic people don’t know they have it and are therefore not getting tested. They have however, documented through contact tracing, found that asymptomatic carriers do spread the virus.
Again - the numbers just aren’t good due to the nature of asymptomatic carriers not being aware they are carriers.

The projected number of US deaths, even before the recent protests on top of almost all states opening up and / or people just abandoning some social distancing protocols, is at 800-1000 deaths per day! By mid Oct 2020 we could easily be facing 200K+ dead Americans due to COVID-19 (currently standing at 110K+). These are just jarring numbers to which we have become somewhat insensitive to because of the current state of affairs in our nation.

If you wish to protect yourselves, your families and those who you love & care for, the amount of personal responsibilities will play a very large factor in such goals. I am sad to predict that we will be in for quite a rough ride and all those seemingly crazy measures which we took back in March, ergo hoarding up TP, guns, ammo and all kinda stuff which seemed like an overreaction at the time, may actually come to pass for real this time come winter time in 2020.

Take what I say with a grain of salt as I'm never a glass-half-full-guy but my cautious nature has served me OK for the last 56 years!

In other news, a study out of Harvard Medical School suggests that this COVID-19 virus may have been spreading far earlier in Wuhan than the Nov/Dec 2019 timeline as reported by the Chinese government and WHO. This study is based on some spy work and satellite imagery showing hospital parking lots filling up at accelerated rates as far back as last August in southern China in addition to a surge in web searches in China relating to nausea and diarrhea.

I don't know how this thing will shake out but at some point the collective World will be perhaps be looking toward China for massive compensation for their lack of truth telling and lack of transparency. I just hope to whatever I believe in that as a nation we will wake the eff up and take pride again in us providing US with the majority of our own supply chain, shore up our lower classes so that they can afford to buy American made goods again (costs more but lasts heckuva lot longer) instead of the crap which we have been peddled to in that few decades.

Either that or I suppose that we will find out soon enough how the very wealthy and super privileged really taste like! ;) :D

One of the many things that I'm disappointed in, is that so many people have seemingly fallen into the 'it's all over' mindset.

That includes the whole, "We need to ramp up US production of PPE, so we're not reliant on China/anyone else". That appears to have fallen by the wayside. We're not taking the lull in this pandemic to massively shore up our PPE supply chain.

We're already seeing resurgence in numerous states, even as Summer kicks off and people are outside (and not cooped up indoors, where they're exposed to higher viral loads due to being in enclosed proximity for longer durations).

If nothing changes by the Fall, we're potentially going to see a significant spike as temperatures drop and people spend more time indoors. And when the people who scoffed at wearing masks have a hard time finding effective ones while people they personally know are catching this, things could get even more stressful, on top of the stress and unrest that typically occurs as we get closer to the elections.

Stay safe, look ahead, and plan accordingly.

A good friend of mine passed away earlier this year of pneumonia like symptoms at 39.
The coroner finally had time to test his donated skin and eyes only to find out he was Covid positive.

He died January 7th.
