Cult of the peanut , members

Well gentleman,
Today I took the leap o' faith and left the house with only a yella 'nut in the watch pocket! I have been a member of the cult since March 2011, but not quite faithful enough to travel without something a little larger in the pocket as well. I have a whole box full of Traditional pocketknives from a Buck 307 and Case '75 right down to my Dad's little pen knife. I've got Sodbuster's, all kinds of stockman's, lock backs and a couple of medium jacks that really hit the sweet spot for me. After rereading Carl's tales last night, (I respectfully thank) (blame) him for my renewed interest in the mighty peanut, I decided why not try a week with out an accompanying larger blade and see where this goes.
I have been slowly trying to simplify my life and downsizing to smaller and less with an eye to the twilight years of life. Do we need all that stuff? I thought I did. My Dad tried to teach me, but well, what did that "Old Man" know. I think I spend way more time on the forum than my wallet can support, so I have taken a path to spend less and make do. (I'm sure that will last about a week). Well, I don't drink or smoke so I guess I'll have to buy knives and fishing tackle. Keep showing them guy's and lets make some converts!

Congratulations on making the leo of faith!:thumbup::thumb up:

My guess is that you will survive the day in fine style, and with a lighter load in your pocket. As my old man told me, the peanut is a 'mostly' knife. It will do mostly what you have to do, and if it's a bit small, then another inch will not have made that much difference. That has been my experience with the smaller knives and other things that have been downsized over the years. Guns, flashlights, camping gear. My downsizing has went through a couple of evolutionary stages.

I know that it feels funny at first. When I first started carrying dad's old peanut, before I got one of my own, it was always carried alongside my old Buck stockman. But one day there came that fateful decision to leave the stockman home and see if I could do what my dad did; go about my life with a smaller pocket knife than normal. I lived through it, although I did have some anxiety moments of withdrawal now and then. But heck, there came a day when the peanut seemed so normal, that I tried an experiment carrying just a Victorinox classic around the wilds of Washington D.C.

I'm still here to talk about it.

Welcome to the next stage of The Cult!

A pic after a quick morning hike...

A peanut captured in the wild, if only for a moment in a photograph, is a thing of beauty.

The Condor is neat too...

Nice picture Jackknife. You won't see that around DC. They always look bigger than my concept of a peanut in pictures. But I also think they cut bigger too.

Naaa, wasn't much cactus around D.C., nor scorpions or tarantulas either. I admit the tarantula was cool though!:thumb up:

But the little peanut does punch above it's weight when it comes to cutting!:)

Was reminded again today that the Peanut is my favorite knife for field surgery, I keep the pen blade on my them scalpel sharp all the time.

Can't tell you how many times I've used them to reopen an infected wound and clean it out, dig for splinters, or lance blisters- this time blood blisters. Best to (lightly!)wave the blade through a flame first, this time I used a trusty Zippo, which always rides in my watch pocket with the 'nut all the time too.

I do the exact same thing with my Peanut. The small blade doesn't get used unless I need a super sharp edge for digging out splinters or something. It's come in handy many times when you absolutely need a sharp blade that won't cause more damage to your skin then necessary.

Would any cult members know where i could acquire a peanut in 1095 with a swedge and glorious long pull? Ive got a yeller case nut in cv and its great, ive just realized i much prefer 1095, long pulls and swedges. Any help would be appreciated.

I have been lurking for awhile due to the yellow cv peanut deciding to perform a disappearing act to never be seen again! After a lengthy mourning period I replaced it with a brown bone cv older peanut from that auction site. I never realized how much I missed my "nut" thinking my 87 was good enough that is a fine knife and one my son wants for a gift for earning his Eagle Scout and I will be glad to hand it over as this nut sea to handle everything that my slightly larger 87 does with no problems so with head hung in shame for letting my yellow nut escape I humbly ask for admission back into the Cult!

That's definitely not a picture setting we're used to seeing from you Carl! A very different world from the woods of the east coast isn't it? :)

Yes!

It's a really huge change from the eastern hardwood forest to the Texas kill country. But in a very weird way, hauntingly familiar. This is close to where Karen and I first met, and we lived at Ft. Sam Houston in the beginning. Started off in Texas and ending up in Texas with a whole big chunk of Maryland in the middle.:D

Maybe life does go in a circle.

This morning my newest peanut arrived, it is the Autumn Bone sloped bolster, it does not look much like its picture in the on site catalogue i bought it from in fact the covers look like those pictures we see of a New England Fall with brightly coloured leaves, i can not decide if i should dunk it in the coffee dregs , my thought is as i only got it as a back up should the unthinkable happen and my trusty chestnut bone nut make a run for the woods, to leave it as is. Of course i am pretty well cock a hoop this morning as my 6.5 Bone Stag Teardrop also arrived. I shall be happy when my old Dell Studio returns after my niece fixes it for me and perhaps i will be able to post pictures because this Windows 10 thing i am using at present defeats me.

I'd like to see that Fall colors peanut- good luck with the pictures.

I'm thinking chrome box for my next computer.

Ah, Texas. The trees are smaller, and the bugs are bigger.

But a Peanut's a Peanut the world 'round.

It looks like the Camillus R8shell posted above might meet your criteria, but I'm not sure of the steel...

A USA made Schrade 72OT is the only other one that comes to mind with a long pull and straight 1095 (although CV IS 1095 with some extra chromium and vanadium) - no swedge on the old timer, although with a file and some patience you could have one :)

Older 108OTs (peanut-sized stockmen) have a long pull, 1095 and a swedge, but they are not easy to come by in that configuration.

You can't beat the steel or grinds on those USA old timers, but the swinden key construction is kind of a bummer - great candidates for modding, though if you get ones with wobbly blades!

Brothers, I've been trying to keep up with my peanut, after it went through the washing machine. I don't want to mar it, but I need to send it in to Case for some RnR. I need to get a replacement while it's at Case. I've gotten one of the Tidioute 14 Lick Creek jacks, two blade, but it doesn't hold a candle to my Damascus peanut. I think a trip to either the local knife shop, or Bass Pro, is in order.

The King is a forgetful fat bastid, long live the King!
