Thanks JD as I say, only do a little and check after each swipe of the needle file.

Here's something that I'm sure most of you guys/gals would think odd, a sheath to carry the peanut? well of course I'm biased in carry but, when sitting or just not wanting to dig through my pockets and want to keep the dust bunnies out of there, a sheath for me works a lot of the time. I wish I had a little thinner leather, this was a bit of a pain to form!!! lol small knife but the blade shape of the clip makes it snap into the sheath so solid she'll never ever shake free but you can pull her out when needed. Handy little knife, makes me miss that Damascus stag I had, goofy me!

Can you post a pic of the sheath back, i want to try and make something similar..well, at least in function, because in looks i don't think i'm quite there yet.
Thanks a lot.

Don't have one of that right now, but you can check this tutorial thread I made a while back, scroll down to post 32 I think and it has some photos of how these are finished.
I call it leather origami, as it wraps around and folds down behind the knife, one piece of leather.

Hey Gary i was admiring your Peanut Pouch but i could not help but think as i looked at my Chestnut Bone "Nut" beside the picture that it would be better if the knife was the other way up ie tip up.

Great thread Gary  you do fantastic work :thumbup:, I bookmarked it for future reference, I'm going to have to give it a shot and step up my simple slip sheaths that I have made, your instructions were very good, reminds me a little like the metal fabrication I used to do, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and talent.

Well Carl you have sold me on the idea.. Should have one by the end of the week and my transformation will be complete haha. Whats with the clamp on the light? Thank you for the picture!

Hi Carl you and Mudguard convinced me as well, i have been carrying a Streamlight Microstream a nice little light but i lprefer the way the Fenix disappears into my pocket i have a short paracord lanyard with a "false turks head knot" to help locate it. I read your post yesterday and ordered one from a supplier (he did try and convince me to go with the Maglite Solitaire) the Fenix arrived this morning, so far so good...

I think I speak for both of us when I say " atta boyyy..."

Oh man! The Maglight solitaire is about 25 years behind the times. About the same about of light as a candle. The Fenix E01 is a whole other ball game with upgraded LED. More light, more throw, more run time. The E05 is yet another step up, more light but less run time. The E01 is a nice balance of real world useful light with great hours of run time.

Now darkness has fallen i have done a quick comparison between the Microstream and the E01 and to be honest the Microstream is brighter than the E01 but as i only want it for finding things i may have dropped close to me i still prefer the way it sits in my pocket, the Microstream i shall clip to the chest pocket of my Barn Coat. And of course it could be that a new battery in the E01 will redress the balance, time will tell.

Great pictures, I absolutely Love your work Gary! thanks for sharing.

fwiw, it is also possible to Shrink or even stretch a leather pouch with the hot water technique you use for forming.

Here is a GEC pocket slip that I did a hot water soak on, with a plastic bag wrapped knife inside. I was just curious to see what would happen. (Saran Wrap is better)

IMG_6907.JPG

I just let the leather shrink however it wanted to, I did minimal shaping using my thumbnail to close the mouth. After reading your tutorial, I can see room for improvement, using a pressing tool to form the top layer. Part of the issue is that the GEC sheath uses thinner leather for the back, so it shrinks more than the front.

My design goals are different than for a belt sheath. I want to carry in pocket, and do not want keys or change to contact the end of the knife. I also prefer very light sheaths, so I use deerskin primarily. Since I do not store the knife in the sheath when not carrying, I have not had any problem using Chrome tanned leather. With knife inside.

Now to stay on Peanut topic

The nut

Here is a deerskin pouch I made that was way too tight. Soaking it in hot water, with the knife inside (wrapped in plastic), created a nice "molded" fit.

Nut inside, on the right (did not save enough pics)

The E01 isn't very bright, but it will run forever, they are tiny, light and it is pretty much indestructible. Put an Energizer Lithium in it and you're set.

If you want something brighter, the Fenix LD01 is about the same size and is way brighter (with 3 settings: low, med, high). It still doesn't run as long on low, but it lasts a long time. I have had an LD01 in my pocket with an Energizer Lithium, for about a year now on the same battery. I only use it for a few minutes a day here and there, so I expect it to last another year. :) The Lithium batteries last longer, are lighter, they won't leak and hot/cold temperatures don't affect them at all.

Thanks for the tip i shall buy an Energizer Lithium for both my E01 & Microstream and see how that works out..

Lotta "flashlight" talk goin' on folks! Let's get some more peanuts in here.

Here's mine. It's traveled in England and Italy and handled vacation tasks very well.

I can't speak for Gary , but I suspect that it is all to do with retention of the knife in the sheath .
The shape of the knife determines which way up is the best , so the sheath can get a good grip on the knife and achieve a solid lock up when the knife is fully inserted .

Ken

Ken, you're very perceptive sir, I've turned down sheath work as the way the person wanted their sheath wouldn't work well for my style, so I'd send them to one of the other makers that construct their sheaths a bit differently, nicer in a lot of ways too.

With the Peanut, my first sheath for one, the peak of the clip blades spine helped to dictate when end would be in the sheath, as the peak is closer to that end of the knife, it might work the otherway round, but in order to have adequate knife handle to grip to pull it clear, you may not have much if any to work with. And I can see your thinking on having it tip up, but being such a small knife it hasn't been too awkward to turn it into position to open her up.

The back side of the sheath, just a few quick pic's
has my G2 mark, then the Month*Year and then a Right foot print

and to keep on the Peanut track ;) a shot of the nice clip blade

And yes, probably a little of both on that photo, I wanted to get the lighting so it really shows off the jigging on that scale, I love photography as much knives, just about...

I take your point Ken but my plan was to have the knife sit a little deeper so the rivet just shows i thought it was more grippier that way up but i defer to Gary and his experience. When i say grippier i mean easier to pinch twixt finger and thumb for withdrawal.

Well you can count me in! My favorite knife of right now the chestnut on the box was my first and I've carried it almost every day sense I've got it. I didn't once and I just felt naked. I even bought a backup chestnut 'nut just in case if something happend to it. Then the yella handled 'nut was a gift. Then the stag was a I just had to. Im sure there will be many more to come.

O dear that self justification rings a bell with me and i guess 99.9% of the rest of us on any knife forum anywhere, keep the faith brother.

Gev, Etta could put a person in a trance with that song

She's one of my favorites of all time ;)
