Cutlery Proposals for the Bladeforums 2015 Knife

GEC put an interesting offer, yet for me 4" is too much for EDC so I'll have to pass if it will be chosen. As for comparing between the two, I think CSC nailed it this year. Anyway I'll take any forum knife in the size of 3.5" to 3 5/8 close length.

4" in a single spring is actually a quite small package
also the wood makes it even slimmer

Sorry to be so distant my friends. I have taken a little breather from most of the forums. I have been at it for a few years now. I will certainly keep this thread up to date, but may back off for a short while more, on the others.
I'm sure I will be back at it soon!!

Latest news!!
I did invite Queen into the "game"! They got back to me, saying they will be here for 2016. They are undergoing some changes, and are very busy. I wished them all the best from us. I am sure they are trying to bring back their former glory!!

GEC has done a drawing for us!!
It is based on their #81 pattern, so is a big knife at 4 inches. They propose peachseed jigged bone and carbon steel, but those specs can be changed.
Otherwise, it is a very classic 2-blade Stockman, with Clip and Spey.

What do you think??

I like GEC's offering as well as Canal Street's
So I suppose I'm on the fence at this point!

Thank You Charlie for all the work that goes on behind the scenes!
I wouldn't want your phone bill calling from Canada all over the states!

I can attest to the fact that the single spring TK Cuban (4" equal end-jigged copperhead bone) disappears in my pocket. The same can be said about the Northwoods Presidential I use to have. I can't agree that wood covers make them more so. I can safely say, after picking up a coco bolo TK Cuban, that the wood version is marginally wider and heavier, but I'm splitting hairs. I can say this, the wood version is not in my pocket and the bone one is, or is it, I can't tell.

To be fair I am bringing them both forward on the same page again quoting bits of Fanglekai's post this time. (Thanks Fanglekai)
I'm still leaning way towards Canal Street Cutlery's submission. ;)
As an aside, I really like that Eric has jumped right up with a solid proposal.

So just curious.

Are we not going to vote for a certain pattern this year, and have a company work with us on it?

We're just go with whatever proposals we are offered?

Is this the first year we haven't had a vote laid forward with multiple patterns?

That's my understanding of it, Jon. When this process began for this year I thought it was said that giving the criteria to the manufacturers and letting them come up with a knife that fits them is the better way to go. A big concern seems to be keeping it under $100, and when we vote first and then look for the manufacturer to make the knife that we chose it tends to get a bit pricey. Or at least it has in the past.

I agree, however keeping it under $100. may be why most of the companies haven't responded yet?

Personally I like the voting, but I wouldn't complain if Charlie picked the one he thought would serve us best.
If we get to vote (and I'm sure we will) I only ask that if more than two knives are on proffer that we have a runoff between the two biggest vote getters, unless of course one of the original group gets more than 50%.
That way most voters will have voted affirmative for the winner.

Remember this is an essentially non-profit knife. When a knife is listed for sale on a dealer's site for something over $100, its cost to the dealer is well under $100. The companies are very happy to sell in this price range!
It is a sweet spot for all concerned!!

I liked the way it worked out last year, there was general good will, and people were excited about the offerings. So far there have been two cool designs, I'm curious to see what Case comes up with, but I'm guessing they'll have an outside chance compared to the first two propositions from CSC and GEC.

I see. So we're just waiting on Case then?

My enthusiasm has waned. I'm not excited by CSC's shadow pattern or GEC's 81. They are both a little too big. And the squarish bolsters on the GEC, and the wood covers and large pins of the CSC, both leave me a little cold. I love a single spring knife, but not the way these are drawn up.

If the CSC was Micarta, and only 3.5", then I would be more excited. If the GEC had rounded, or lined bolsters, was 3.5", and had something other than jigged bone handles, I could really get behind it.

No, we have asked that each company propose a knife. We will vote on which one we like best. We did this last year, as well. The previous methodology of us coming up with a design and putting it out for bid became VERY difficult (and rancorous) as the number of people involved increased.

This year we asked Queen, Canal Street, GEC and Case. Queen declined because they are still reorganizing after the buyout. Canal Street and GEC have submitted designs. Case has expressed interest but hasn't responded with a design yet.

There is no way any one design can please everyone. Every year there are those for whom the forum knife design does not ring their chimes. Some quietly buy anyway. Some quietly bow out. No problems with either of those. However, please make sure that, if you don't care for the knife or the process, you remain in one of those two categories.

And sometimes it looks like something you would not like, but then it comes out and you must have one. ;)

That's how the GEC EO Jack version was (what year was that??) I hated the idea of that blade shape, usually have a bottle opener on my keychain, the scale shape/material did nothing for me, etc... But once people started posting real pictures it all came together to be awesome in my eyes, and I was one of a couple people who won the chance to purchase the leftover/unclaimed ones. Love that knife!

As for SFOs, and last year's forum knife, I often find, especially if Waynorth is involved, that I end up loving the result despite any reservations along the way. I expect this one will end up as a must-have.
