Dave's story kind of reminds of the character in the movie Gattaca. Someone who wants something so bad and would do anything to get their foot in the door because there was no way he would have gotten in had he been honest about it. In the end, through determination, dumb luck, and even some human compassion and forgiveness he was able to pursue and successfully accomplish his dream.

(Remember the episode where Dave cut his arm to demonstrate cauterization of wounds? He was shaking with pain while self-inflicting the cut. I couldn't help thinking that only someone who wanted it so bad and wanted to prove himself would do it. Sure, you could say another reason is plain stupidity, but notwithstanding such a reason and the fallacy of this practice, it took some guts to do it).

Anyways, some good arguments all around. Everyone has different perceptions...to me, his youtube post seemed sincere and in fact he looked like he's aged a decade.
 
Ok I watched the first ep. of season 3 with Joe...I am not impressed or entertained in anyway by him! I know you cant compare but I'm going to anyway...regardless of daves record he has shown he knows a thing or two about survival. Joe made a comment about the hi-tech gear they get in the military and the planning...that he doesnt have to deal with this. Really...did anyone else find this a little off? Then why are you on this show? You get limited to no gear, let alone hi-tech for that matter, and zero planning. He was kind of a tool as well, sorry not kinda, he was...then he drank his piss...what is he grylls now? I liked dave and codys chemistry. They were also funny. Oscar and Felix! If this show is only signed for one season after this first episode I dont think discovery will renew it based on what I saw. The rates will fall.

I'm sorry, I could give two craps about his record, I liked the show the way it was and with the cast that was! Yes he embellished...and no one got hurt for it. I know some are offended by it...fine...cast the first stone. He owned up to it like a man! Lets face it, its TV. Just remove his record from the intro and lets make some episodes. Dave's school gives him pretty good credit-ability...some of which Joe can't hold a candle to in many regards! You want someone better...get rambo (and a good supply of body bags...hahaha!, couldnt help myself). Im glad he apologized and you can take it or leave it...for me it never mattered...its TV!
 
I agree. I would have liked to have seen "the new guy" do more listening than talking. I would have thought that someone with his military accomplishments would have learned that trait already but I guess not. Dave and Cody had an interesting chemistry because they challenged each other but they also allowed themselves to learn from each other. Joe seems like his glass is already too full for that.

It is reality TV. It is scripted. They are actors following a script. Someone writes it. Someone directs it. Someone edits it. And they sell it. Evidently many buy it.
 
It is partly scripted and yes very editted but I still enjoy it. Better than a lot of the crap that is out there.

This is why I don't give a whiffle ball for any of the "Survival Fantasy" personalities. They fluff their creds to impress other wannabes and they present often dangerous behaviors to gullible people as being expert knowledge worth emulating. You can learn more real world skills here and elsewhere from people who really know cabbage from elephant dung. People who don't claim some mystical imaginary aboriginal shaman or some made up military experience.

But there's a lot of different routes to how the entertainment is gained – bit like women that don't give a hoot about rugby but watch it to see chaps with good legs in short trousers. Some of us are entertained by this stuff and laugh along with it. Some of us are entertained by this stuff but are very definitely laughing at it.
 
Bear Grillz is the real deal, it's not edited, not scripted and he's a ex special forces black ops ninja from the ancient world! How dare you judge my hero!!

And after all, it is TV.
It's just TV.
Land like I've always thought about Bear, Cody, Dave, Les, etc.: My kids find the shows interesting and these shows do encourage my kids to be doing outside stuff.
 
I don't post much anymore but this thread peaked my interest. I really don't have a comment on Bear, Dave or the new guy Tetis or whatever his name is, I am pretty much over TV survival soaps. I do think it is hilarious that someone who is military or ex military are supposedly endowed with some special ethics, morals or skills. Some of the biggest pieces of crap, brainless idiots I have ever met in my life were/are service members to include SF "operators". It kills me how these shows all seem to tout someones military service as proof of prowess, actually it is kinda sad. Chris
 
It seems like wilderness survival, doomsday prepping, SHTF, end of the world or what ever you want to call it has become a marketing tool just like military Special Operaters, Navy Seals, Rangers, Delta Force, etc. I remember 8 years ago the wilderness survival community was very small. Ron Hood was the main man along with a few others. Now everybody is an expert if they took a survival course. Just like survival schools. Back then there weren't nearly as many as there are now. Same with survival related forums. When the survival craze hit TV it has gotten to point now where it's laughable.

just because it's exaggerated on television (for entertainment) doesn't mean it's for gullible people.

that's a pretty pompous statement.

most of them have decades of real experience, books and other various accomplishments.

Survivor is the only one I do like, girls in skimpy bathing suits and no pretense of factual, real world applicable information.
 
i didn't want to pull it completely off course.

yes he was inspired by a show.

he took a bs show and made it real.

he's also the only one that actually puts himself in a survival situation.

that alone gets my respect.

I don't know Les. Never met the man. He has made himself wealthy doing what he enjoys. Good for him. I don't know his source of expertise. He didn't really get on the survival bandwagon until the mid-nineties from what I understand. Before that he was a musician/songwriter. Briefly a canoe guide and garbage collector in the early nineties. I have not seen where he has claimed to be anything other than an "expert" in survival, a photographer and producer. Ive only seen a few of his videos and found them mildly entertaining. Anoying at times, but usually entertaining. After all he is... an entertainer.
