I don't know Les. Never met the man. He has made himself wealthy doing what he enjoys. Good for him. I don't know his source of expertise. He didn't really get on the survival bandwagon until the mid-nineties from what I understand. Before that he was a musician/songwriter. Briefly a canoe guide and garbage collector in the early nineties. I have not seen where he has claimed to be anything other than an "expert" in survival, a photographer and producer. Ive only seen a few of his videos and found them mildly entertaining. Anoying at times, but usually entertaining. After all he is... an entertainer.

I actually think Les is the closest true expert out there. He brings his only film equipment, shoots his footage himself...so no crew, no one following him closely (well they usually are 15 miles out but still). He does it all. I like how he does a scenario as well. For example Broken down in a car in the snow and cold in norway..etc. Yeah the other guys have done similar and this is still TV but it is more real then the other shows that have a crew and script right there in front of them. Les has a theme...get out! I would consider him more of an expert then anyone else when it comes to survival...however short term survival. He has done over 50 survival episodes on discovery and science a scale that is far and away more difficult then dave, cody, bear, and so on. Havent no film crew and having to lug all of his own equipment around to film his show survivorman is a pretty big feat! Now lets splash in extreme cold, no too limited food, extreme heat...none of those other guys hold a candle to les. But in the end...it is still TV. But I like it and watch it..and this is my opinion regardless if what is said here. If he claimed to be anything from a greeter at walmart to special force I could care less! Because he is actually doing it and on a regular basis in multi environments...something I nor probably anyone on this thread is doing. Same can be said for Dave...I could care less what dave qualifications are for even the most qualified die! At least they are doing something and their something is more then mine. If anyone doesnt like it...dont watch it. If you dislike his record fine other dont care. This is TV...let it be what it is. I am with you codger on this!

I have mixed feelings...I enjoyed him on the show, but 'padding' your resume to any significant degree, particularly in military, strikes a nerve. But on the flip side, there's alotta folks 'embellishing' on their CV's these days, trying to land the job, pay the mortgage, feed the kids, etc. Try some of the professional 'resume writers' out there, some of them may be the worst offenders of all in this regard...

At least, it appears on some level he did attempt some form of a partial apology on a world wide network...I am sure hitting the 'upload/post' button for that vid was not a particularly easy thing to be done (tho he he may have had somebody do that for him)...

Some may recall when CNO Adm. Boorda committed suicide 1996 over controversy of his wearing a couple tiny Valor 'V's' on his ribbons...kinda puts things in perspective...

Not to drift too much, but I enjoy Stoud as well...from a layman--not superhuman, SEALGreenBeretRecon tacticool operator-- IMHO he provides some good info and entertainment...not everything he tries works, and sometimes he has to overcome various challenges without leaping from trees/cliffs or swimming rapids...which is exactly what you may have to do if you find yourself in a 'this ain't fun/recreation anymore' emergency situation...I also respect that he has been doing some longer scenarios...in alotta cases, you can get by with very little food/etc for 5 days...push it out until 10 or so days, and its a different story...

Haven't seen the new Dual Survival yet...have to check it out a little...

in the real world he is...

An ex-con with past history of drug abuse and stints in Rehab. Take away the show and his steroids and he's a male Lindsay Lohan.

a survival instructor with several accomplishments.

Not dying isn't an accomplishment.

Good grief. Even Joe Theismann ran a Wilderness Survival school. Does that make him an "expert" as well?

One of the primary reasons people look to the Military for survival skills/training is because they wrote the book on it. FM 21-76.

and where is this steroid information available?

regardless, he has turned his life around.

you have a hard time with forgiveness so it seems.

do you have proof that he has used drugs since rehab because that was quite some time ago?

your background must be squeaky clean.

i would say his good record outweighs the bad.

On a 7 page thread about Dave's Apology, my post was on page 1

I give credit to Cody for capitalizing on the lethargic society in America today. Everything he teaches has already been published thousands of times, taught millions of times and executed billions of times since the beginning of recorded History. He makes money because people will sit in front of a TV and believe his schpiel... he even admits it on his website…

This thirst for ratings colors everything, and truth and reason go out the window when people stand to make a lot of money. It is expected that the television host and the production company will bend the rules to allow whatever network executives want to appear on TV. If the host doesn’t prostitute themselves out to the network and deliver the right product, there is a line of people more than willing to do so. I myself have been asked to do incredibly dumb things by network executives such as purposely fall into cold water and get hypothermic in the name of “drama.”

... there is no quality control for programming other than if “Joe viewer” will watch it, and needless to say, a gullible general public is just as clueless about survival skills as the networks. For some reason, if a program appears on television, people assume it to be factually correct and well researched; and at times nothing could be further from the truth.

...If you love your survival shows and pick up a cool survival tidbit or two, fine. But please have the common sense and wisdomto realize the show for what it is -- entertainment.

ok, so you forgave dave canterbury.

that's a start.

would you say that everything that dave "capitalizes" on has been taught and executed billions of times as well?

the answer would be yes.

the rules of survival dont often change.

cody lundin has an appealing personality and brings some humor to the show as well.

take him or leave him.

it's pretty obvious how you feel about the guy.

that takes away nothing from all of the great accomplishments he's achieved.

i personally feel that you are judging him superficially.

he doesn't meet your appearance qualifications for a survival instructor..

Everyone makes mistakes, and makes bad choices.

I'm sure I can learn from Dave on his youtube channel or whatever else he decides to do. I'm sure I can learn from Cody through his various media outlets as well.

We have video evidence of Dave apologizing publicly, which takes some amount of courage.

In addition, it's not like Cody is trying to conceal his background with addiction: http://www.codylundin.com/wordpress/question-answers-contest/

I respect both men. And, I enjoyed them together on seasons 1 and 2. Let's see how season 3 plays out with Teti.

Well I probably know very little in regard to outdoor survival, compared to most any of you here I suppose. But I have seen what far northern Indians can do so I don't Viagra over any of these tv show dudes. Yes, I learn cool stuff from them, as I do from the posters here. A book or a person, no difference to me.

He should pick a different military unit next time around claim for his background. Be a SEAL, Force Recon, CIA paramilitary or something, just don't pick the Rangers. I take that personal.

We all know another person in the cutlery industry that claimed a Ranger background too. At one time I always wondered why I came away feeling like I was a total woozy during my time in the 75th compared to these super soldiers. Now I know, because they make their backgrounds up after reading a Sergeant Rock comic book. :)

I can see why you would take it a little personal, and thanks again for your service, Steve.
What Dave did was just plain dumb. All he would have had to say was the truth from the get go
and people still would have said. Cool.

I am kind of glad he did not say he was in the Marines though lol :).

I have both of Lundin's books, and it's a love/hate thing. They both have lots of good information, but the childish cartoons and exaggerations really turn me off. When I see him exaggerating, it makes me wonder what other parts of the truth he's embellishing, and detracts from his credibility.

For example, in his second book, p. 145 and 146 he says:

A leaking faucet (1 drip per second) will leak 2,000 gal of water a year. BS. Do the math, it's more like 350, and even that, IMO, is highly suspect. I had a leaky faucet once, and put a cup under it overnight. I got barely a pint after 8 hours, and it was about a drip per second.

The average toilet uses between 5-7 gallons per flush. BS. The only way that mine would use that is from multiple flushings because the stupid 1.6 flush didn't work. Even so, who cares? It's called a water cycle for a reason.

A shower uses 5 gallons per minute. BS. Easy enough to check, all of mine use less than 2.

And so on. His books are filled with this. Now I realize that he's pushing an agenda, but to openly state such obvious falsehoods really makes me question his knowledge. My Dad always said, the first person to resort to swearing, name calling, or personal attacks is the one who lost the argument. I'll add lying to that list.

Well making that video I'm sure took some courage.

OTOH, I'm not sure why he is apologizing... It appears that he has "found Jesus" and forgiven himself so I don't quite know what he is after. Is he apologizing so that he can go on making a living as a "survival instructor" and to regain some credibility?

The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naïve forgive and forget; the wise forgive but do not forget.

Until Cody starts wearing shoes (maybe he has??) he's into primitive skills not real-world scenario survival skills IMO. I mean if any of us found ourselves in the wilderness in a survival situation, would your first thought be to take off your shoes before heading out into the wilderness??? It's just ridiculous.

I don't think Les Stroud is a survival "expert", I'm not even sure he would claim to be an expert, but I do think his show is the most realistic and most entertaining.
